Clemency Includes Respite for Condemned Whaley Murderers
Nashville, Dec. 31 – (Special) – Gov. TAYLOR today commuted to twenty years the life sentence upon Benier RICHARDSON of Wilson county, in 1885, for murder, on the ground that doubt has arisen as to his guilt.
John BUCKINGHAM of Bedford was pardoned. He was in for two years for assault to kill.
Martin CAPPS of Lewis county, in for 5 years for housebreaking and larceny, had his sentence commuted to two and a half years, which will release him soon.
The governor also respited Pleas WYNNE and Cattlet TIPTON, sentenced to hang January 3 at Sevierville, until April 5, on the ground that they are material witnesses in the case of the State vs. Cattlett.
