Fire in Covington (1875)
Covington Record, May the 28: A fire broke out about one o’clock yesterday morning on the east side of the square. It was a terrible conflagration. Nothing but the fact of being there but little wind and the building being wet from the rain of the preceding evening saved the north side from being consumed. There is some doubt as to where the fire originated, but it is generally believed to have started at the back of SITT’s drug store. It spread slowly, but the heat was so great that it seemed at one time that nothing could save the north side. The following approximates the amount lost: James L. SITT, house and stock, $3,000; John S. DOUGLAS & Co., house and stock, $3,500; W.M. HALL, house and stock of furniture, $2,500 (the house of this firm belonged to Dave O’CONNER, of Mason, who lost about $2,000; J. LOWENHAUPT, house and stock, $3,500; A. LIPMAN, house and stock, $800; H. HIENZ, watchmaker, stock and watches, $500; R.H. MUNFORD, house, $800; James WINBORN, tailor, $250. Besides these losses several young men, who were rooming in this row, lost all their clothing, bedding, etc., amount unknown, and in one or two instances barely escaped with their lives.
