Sardis, Henderson Co, TN, 1889-1895

Lieutenant Nicholas Pitt served in Company H of the 6^th Tennessee Cavalry, USA.  He enlisted in September 1862 at age 28 and was discharged by Special Orders in August 1864.  Buried in the Pitt Cemetery in Hardin Co, TN, he has a military marker but there are no dates.  Other sources say he died in 1883.  The GAR organization only allowed posts to be named posthumously.  A majority of the members of this post served in the 6^th TN Cavalry (29), or the 7^th TN Cavalry (11).  Other units included the 10^th TN (7), various Illinois regiments (6), various Ohio regiments (3), US Navy (3), 2^nd TN Mounted Infantry (3), New Hampshire (1) and New York (1).  The Carroll County Democrat reported that a number of the members of the Huntingdon, TN Post #56 left “in buggies, wagons and on horseback” to attend an area reunion at Sardis in September of 1889, the first year of existence for Post #65.

General Orders generally (but not always) means the person was discharged with the regiment at the end of the war.

Expiration of Term generally means that they served their one or three year enlistment.

The numbers at the end of each entry is the number of the veteran on the GAR list.
