The immigrant family of John Keathley Sr. first settled in Wayne County, North
Carolina.
In 1736, Duplin County , North Caolina was settled and the Keathley Family may
have moved to near the town of KENANSVILLE, NC.
In the first Federal Census of 1790 in Duplin County, NC, only the names of the
head of the household was listed and the number of people in the household.
JONATHON KEATHLEY is listed along with the number 9 (nine) for his family. It is

John Keathley Sr., wrote his will on the 20th of Mar 1793 and it was recorded

wife, Elizabeth. His wife was bequeathed the choice of the feather beds and
family belongings. She was to receive half of the kitchen furniture during her
remaining life. He gave one feather bed and furniture to his son, Jonathon Sr. ,
after his wife , ELIZABETH, passed away. He gave the same to his son, John Jr.

John signed his will by spelling his name JOHN KETHLEY SR. at the end of the

Jonathon was born, perhaps not far from the town of Albertson near the Northeast
Cap Fear River. His father, John Sr., was a farmer and probably raised several
crops including the highly profitable tobacco crop. A large market for tobacco
had developed in England and western Europe. The climate of North Carolina was
ideal for the production of this crop.
Jonathon grew up on his parents farm and himself would become a very successful
farmer eventually owning 2,300 acres under cultivation. As a young man, Jonathon
put his energies into farming, land aquisition, and other aspects of getting
ahead in the late 1700s.
