Old Salem, 5 miles SE of Brownsville, was sold to the blacks in 1871 and some of the members joined Chestnut Grove and others formed a new church at Moore’s School the present site of Marvin’s Chapel.<\/p>\n
In February 1880 William Naylor Sr. deeded land for the Church. They cut timber and had the building framed and the roof and weatherboarding on by spring. After the crops were laid by they completed the building in July.<\/p>\n
In August 1880, Rev. Duckworth held the first service in the new building named for Bishop Marvin. In 1887 a cemetery was established.
