{"id":403,"date":"2014-01-21T18:27:41","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T23:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/?p=403"},"modified":"2014-08-26T20:52:13","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T00:52:13","slug":"railroad-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/railroad-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Railroad Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bull&#8217;s Gap, originally called Rogersville Junction, was an important location for railroad transportation in Hawkins County.<\/p>\n<p>In 1858, the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad used slave labor to lay the first tracks through the area.\u00a0 During the Civil War the strategic location of the tracks made Bulls Gap the frequent scene of fighting between Union and Confederate forces, though the railroad and Bulls Gap remained under Federal control throughout the war.\u00a0 In the postwar period the railroad dominated the economic life of the town.\u00a0 At the turn of the century the Southern Railway System gained control over the lines passing through Bulls Gap and built a small maintenance center and railroad yard.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small\">[Source:\u00a0 http:\/\/www.hawkinscountytn.gov\/]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following links provide information that may be of use to those researching railroads in the area.<\/p>\n<p>TN &amp; OH Railway Company records, 1885-1889<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>in <a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.vt.edu\/railroad\/rrintro.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Tech University Special Collections<\/a><br \/>\nThe TN&amp;OH RR assumed control of Rogersville and Jefferson RR, which went from Rogersville Junction to Rogersville and was controlled by ET, VA &amp; GA RR; later controlled by Southern RR<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Holston River Railway Company records, 1906-1908<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>in <a href=\"http:\/\/spec.lib.vt.edu\/railroad\/rrintro.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Tech University Special Collections<\/a><br \/>\nThe company built a railroad from Rogersville to the VA state line<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<div id=\"attachment_2567\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2567\" class=\"wp-image-2567 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/rapaper.jpg\" alt=\"Rail-Road Advocate Newspaper\" width=\"252\" height=\"117\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original source unknown<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A newspaper supporting development of railroads in the United States, the <em>Rail-Road Advocate<\/em>, was published in Rogersville from 1831-1832.\u00a0 It was possibly the first railroad-related newspaper in the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bull&#8217;s Gap, originally called Rogersville Junction, was an important location for railroad transportation in Hawkins County.
