{"id":2221,"date":"2014-08-22T18:25:38","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T22:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/?p=2221"},"modified":"2017-06-20T22:47:41","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T02:47:41","slug":"merriman-george-will","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/merriman-george-will\/","title":{"rendered":"Will of George Merriman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 18px;line-height: 24px\">Will Book 2, Pages 178-179<\/p>\n<p>Filed and Proven: May 6, 1878<\/p>\n<p>Knowing the uncertainty of life and certainty of death and being in feeble health of body but of sound mind and memory, I do hereby make and ordain this my last will and testament: as follows to wit:<\/p>\n<p>First &#8212; I give my soul to God who gave it.<\/p>\n<p>2nd. &#8212; I want my funeral expenses paid as soon as convenient after my burial.<\/p>\n<p>3rd &#8212; I want all my just debts settled and paid as soon as convenient.<\/p>\n<p>4th. &#8212; I hereby give and bequeath to my beloved wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Orlena Merriman<\/span> my whole plantation and all my personal property for her support during her natural life or widowhood and also for a [illegible] and support for <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Laura F. Merriman<\/span>, my daughter, while she may be single or unmarried with her Mother.<\/p>\n<p>Now after the death of my wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Orlena<\/span> then I want my estate divided as follows, between my children.<\/p>\n<p>1st. &#8212; I give to my son <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">G. W. Merriman<\/span> the east end of my farm, beginning on <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">J. Netherland<\/span>s line on the north side of the farm and moving across at the east end of the field know as the <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Bob<\/span> field at the road then east along the road to a hickory tree on the south side of the road, then with a post and nail fence across the valley to <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">T. J. A___<\/span> [illegible] line then around the east boundary of my land to the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>2nd. &#8212; I give to my daughter <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Martha Ann<\/span> who married <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">John Powers<\/span> three hundred dollars or the value of the amount in land lying and being with of the land of <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">G. Merriman<\/span> and bounded on the east by his line and on the west beginning on <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Netherland<\/span>s line on the north near to a gap or low place in the ridge, then running so as to enclose the spring, known as the <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Bob<\/span> Spring and to the top of the ridge on the south side of the valley, then along the top of said to <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">G. Merriman<\/span>s line.<\/p>\n<p>3rd. &#8212; I give to my son <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Jesse Merriman<\/span> my homeplace including my house and land what is not included in the lots gave to [illegible] and <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Martha<\/span> on the condition the said <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Jesse<\/span> shall pay to my daughter <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Laura F. Merriman<\/span> three hundred fifty ($350.) dollars or give her land on the west end of my farm to that account.<\/p>\n<p>4th. &#8212; I give to my grandson <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">William Bewley<\/span>, son of <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">William H. Merriman<\/span>, deceased, Five dollars.<\/p>\n<p>5th. &#8212; I give to my grand son heirs of <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Polly Hamblen<\/span>, deceased to wit: <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Charles W. Hamblen<\/span>, Five dollars, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">James M. Hamblen<\/span>, Five dollars and <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Edward R. Hamblen<\/span>, Five dollars<\/p>\n<p>and I hereby appoint <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Orlena<\/span>, my wife executrix to this my last will and she shall choose any one of my sons or sons in law to assist her in the administration of my estate without giving any bond or security for the performance of the same.<\/p>\n<p>I also reserve one half acre of land including the family burying ground with timber to support it and also a road to the burying ground.<\/p>\n<p>Done this 1st day of January 1878<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">G.
