{"id":1883,"date":"2014-03-11T15:10:49","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T19:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/?p=1883"},"modified":"2014-03-11T15:10:49","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T19:10:49","slug":"riggs-john-will","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/riggs-john-will\/","title":{"rendered":"Will of John Riggs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Will Book ___, Page 426<\/p>\n<p> In the Name of God, Amen.<\/p>\n<p> I, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">John Riggs<\/span> of the County of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, being in a bad state of health, but of sound mind and memory, blessed be God, do make and publish this my last Will &amp; Testament in manner and form following, to wit:<\/p>\n<p> First. After all my funeral expenses and all my debts are paid, I do then give and bequeath unto my beloved wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Mary W. Riggs<\/span> all the land that I am now seized and possessed of.<\/p>\n<p>I also do give and bequeath unto my said wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Mary W. Riggs<\/span> my black girl named <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Emily<\/span> during her natural life or widowhood.<\/p>\n<p>It is also my will that after my funeral expenses and debts are paid that the residue of my personal property go to my s&#8217;d wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Mary W. Riggs<\/span> during her natural life or widowhood for the purpose of enabling her to raise and school my children with the exception of such negroes as I may now set apart:<\/p>\n<p>It is my will that my black boy named <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Major<\/span> and my black girl named <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Tabitha<\/span> be sold at public sale to the highest bidder on a twelve months credit; the proceeds of sale applied to the use of paying my debts.<\/p>\n<p>After my debts are paid the residue to be put at interest for the benefit of my heirs, namely, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Willin E. D. Johns<\/span>, a son that my wife had by her former husband; <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Samuel T. Riggs<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">James V. Riggs<\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Pleasant Marion Riggs<\/span>, and my daughter <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Louisa J. Riggs<\/span>, my heirs at law.<\/p>\n<p>After the death or marriage of my said wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Mary W. Riggs<\/span>, it is my will that all my personal property shall be sold by my Executor and the proceeds equally divided amongst my s&#8217;d sons and daughters, share and share alike.<\/p>\n<p> Lastly. I do nominate and appoint <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Franklin G. Taylor<\/span> my Executor.<\/p>\n<p>In witness whereof I do to this my last will set my hand and seal this 31st day of January, 1849.
