{"id":1344,"date":"2014-02-08T18:27:22","date_gmt":"2014-01-26T07:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/?p=1344"},"modified":"2014-02-08T18:43:25","modified_gmt":"2014-02-08T23:43:25","slug":"grigsby-john-will","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/hawkins\/grigsby-john-will\/","title":{"rendered":"Will of John Grigsby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-size: 18px;line-height: 24px\">Will Book __, Page 214<\/p>\n<p>Know all men by these presents that I <b>John Grigsby<\/b> of the County of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, being sick and weak of body but of sound mind and memory do this day make my last Will and Testament.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I give and commend my life into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body to the Earth from whence it sprang.<\/p>\n<p>I give and bequeath to my wife <b>Winney Grigsby<\/b> my negro man <b>Will<\/b> and his family, Viz: <b>Susan, Frank<\/b> and <b>Gibson<\/b>, as long as she lives.<\/p>\n<p>I give and bequeath to my son <b>Nathaniel Grigsby<\/b> and <b>Ashby Grigsby <\/b>all my lands and tenaments lying on the south side of Holston River adjoining on the west to <b>James Sanders&#8217;<\/b> land and to <b>James Bredens&#8217;<\/b> line on the east to be equally divided between them.<\/p>\n<p><b>Nathaniel Grigsby<\/b> is to have the part of the land I now live on, together with the buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The said <b>Nathaniel Grigsby<\/b> and <b>Ashby Grigsby<\/b> are to have no part of the remainder of my lands.<\/p>\n<p>My negro man <b>Will <\/b>is to be no longer a slave after the death of me and my wife <b>Winney Grigsby<\/b>; he shall be allowed to live with any of the children as he pleases or with anybody else.<\/p>\n<p>I give and bequeath to my daughter <b>Judy Smith<\/b> ten dollars out of my Estate and all I have gave her and no more.<\/p>\n<p>I give to my daughter <b>Elizabeth Rutherford<\/b> and <b>John Rutherford<\/b> her husband ten dollars out of the Estate I now have and all I have gave them and no more.<\/p>\n<p>I give to my daughter <b>Fanny Wood<\/b>, dec&#8217;d and <b>John Wood <\/b>her husband ten dollars out of my estate and all I have gave them and no more.<\/p>\n<p>I give to my daughter <b>Polly Smith<\/b> and <b>James Smith<\/b> her husband ten dollars out of my estate and all I have gave them and no more.<\/p>\n<p>I give to my daughter <b>Winney Rutherford<\/b> and <b>John Rutherford<\/b> her husband ten dollars out of my estate and all I have gave them and no more.<\/p>\n<p><b>William Grigsby<\/b> my son is to have $235.00 out of my estate over and above an equal share of the remainder of my estate lands excepted being indebted for the value and all I have gave him and no more.<\/p>\n<p><b>James Grigsby <\/b>is to have an equal share of my Estate, lands excepted.<\/p>\n<p>Also <b>Samuel Grigsby<\/b> is to have an equal share of my Estate lands excepted.<\/p>\n<p><b>John Grigsby<\/b> is to have the price of a plantation out of my estate to be worth Five Hundred Dollars and equal part of the estate.<\/p>\n<p><b>Nancy West<\/b> and her husband <b>James West<\/b> is to have an equal share of my Estate, lands excepted.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lucy Murrel <\/b>[<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Herrial<\/span> ? &#8212; see original] is to have an equal share of my estate, lands excepted, and negro <b>Ede <\/b>and negro<b> Alcy<\/b> also.<\/p>\n<p>I give to my two grand daughters <b>Louisiana Smith<\/b> and <b>Minerva Smith <\/b>a negro girl named <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Rose<\/span> and all I have give them shall be theirs and no more.<\/p>\n<p>So this my last Will and Testament whereunto I have set my hand and affixed my seal, This twenty eighth day of September, 1826.<\/p>\n<p>N.B.
