In the Name of God Amen.
I William Shanks of the County of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory & considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament, that is to day:
First. After all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of my Estate real and personal, I give, bequeath and dispose of as follows, to wit:
To my dear beloved wife Catharine Shanks, all my property and effects, both real and personal during her widowhood, and at her death, the entire property and effects (except one dollar which I give to my daughter Louisiana Hawkins).
The entire balance to be equally divided between my several other children, to wit: Martin V. Shanks, Eliza Ruth P. Shanks, Cyrena G. Shanks, Amanda Shanks, Hannah H. Shanks, Mary Shanks and Roxannah Shanks.
I further will that after my death my wife Catharine Shanks be at liberty to sell any of the property she does not wish to retain.
I appoint my wife Catharine Shanks my Executrix.
This, the eighteenth day of November, 1861.
