Seeking information on Benjamin BOWLING/BOLLING who resided with some of his children after the Revolutionary War in Hawkins County (which may still been Sullivan County, TN at the time). He was baptized in the Blackwater Church by Rev. Andrew Baker. Benjamin’s father was John BOLLING (the Pocahontas Line). Also seeking any information on Samuel NEAL/NEIL and his son, Nelson NEAL/NEIL. They resided in either Hawkins or Hancock Counties and later moved with other members of family to Marshall County, AL near Big Spring, AL, before moving to OK during the relocation of the Cherokee to OK. I made an error in my story to FAMILIES OF HAWKINS COUNTY, TN on the name of her father, it is Thomas, not William. Seeking any information on incident at Burkett’s Chapel during CW in which William Harrison LAYNE and his brother Abraham LAYNE were reportedly hanged by Union soldiers because they supported the Confederate cause. My gr-grandfather Gilford/Guilford Brown who lived in that area and had ties to the LAYNE family was also hanged. Perhaps in the same incident. William, Moses, Isaac, Joseph, Joshua, Mary GUEST, lived in Hawkins Co TN pre-1796,were in Smith/Warren Cos TN before 1806. Biographies of William, Moses and Isaac’s grandsons said their grandfathers “were Cherokee and English”. ALL of the early Guest men named at least one son, usually the first, Martin, or John Martin for at least five generations. Was there any connection between this GUEST/GIST/GUESS family and the Cherokee leader or Indian agent named John MARTIN? Where can we learn more about this legendary John Martin? Hi. I’m looking for any information on the parents of John Fuller DYKES and his wife Mary WARD DYKES. John Fuller DYKES was born 1884 in Hawkins Co, and died 1962 Kingsport TN. He had two brothers Riley and James, that I know of, and went by his middle name Fuller. He married Mary WARD in Washington Co.TN on Dec 28,1908. TALLEY’S CHAPEL CEMETERY
I am trying to compile as complete a list as possible of all those buried in TALLEY’S CHAPEL CEMETERY, Russellville, TN. The cemetery was created prior to the creation of Hamblen Co so many folks from Hawkins Co are buried there. A survey of the cemetery was completed in the 1930s and again in the 1980s. There were only about 20 or so tombstones with names and since then some of them have disappeared. Approximately 125 unmarked graves are there. I know about 15 of the unmarked ones but that leaves many unknown. My family is going to erect a marker with the names of all known burials who don’t have a private marker next summer. If any of you have relatives buried there please let me know. Thank you so much.
