The Hawkins County, TN Mauk families is one we have not yet been able to identify as to origin. My personal belief is that they will trace into the Peter Mauck line of Toms Brook, VA. Another name to watch for in Hawkins County is Lockmiller or sometimes spelled as Loughmiller.
The Peter Mauck family lived on Toms Brook and the George Lockmiller family owned property on Cedar Creek. I was at both locations while in Virginia recently and noted that they were in close proximity. Both Peter Mauck and George Lockmiller were part of the original Adam Mueller settlement near Strasburg. Peter Mauck was the first person naturalized in Frederick County and George Lockmiller was naturalized soon thereafter. J. P. Mock checked the Strasburg Saint Paul Lutheran Records and found that some of the Peter Mauck family attended church there but found no evidence for the Lockmiller families. It is possible they attended another church. Peter Mauck arrived on the ship Samuel in 1733 and George Lockmiller arrived on the ship Winter Galley in 1738. Peter Mauck was thought to have been born in Germany in about 1708 and George Lockmiller was born in Germany about 1714, so they were fairly close in age. Peter didn’t marry until 1739, so they no doubt did have children near the same age.
George Lockmiller’s wife was Catherine and they married in Germany and had seven children:
1. John Lockmiller born ca 1750, married to (1) Elizabeth Rohr and (2)
Sabina Shew. He moved to Hawkins County, TN by 1792.
2. Barbara Mauk who was married by 1790
3. George Lockmiller, Jr born 1756. Married Dorothy Grotton. Died 17 Jan
1798 in Hawkins County, TN.
4. Rebecca Bachman married before 1790
5. Jacob Lockmiller born ca. 1762, married to Catharine Wisert. Died 11 Jun 1821, Shenandoah Co, VA.
6. Margaret Peer/Pier married before 1790
7. Jonas Lockmiller born ca. 1770. Married Mary Boehm. Died after 1840 US Census taken in Hawkins Co, TN. (May have died in Hancock Co, TN which was formed from Hawkins Co, TN in 1844.
George Lockmiller, Sr left a will dated 23 Oct 1788 and was probated 25 Dec 1788. The final estate settlement was dated 30 Sep 1790 in Shenandoah County, VA.
The reason I am presenting this information is that I wanted to show the
close proximity of the George Lockmiller and the Peter Mauck families. Many of the Peter Mauck descendants are known to have gone to Tennessee. It seems very likely to me that the Mauks in Hawkins County, TN are also descended from Peter Mauck and it could be from any one of his sons.
I have been looking at this daughter of George Lockmiller, Barbara, who is
supposed to have married a Mauk. I have some theories who she married, but it is too premature to pressent this without more evidence which I am trying to gather. It seems a good possibility to me that she may have married one of the sons of Peter Mauck.
While in Virginia a few days ago, I went to the Shenandoah County Court
House at Woodstock, and looked up the will and probate records of this George Lockmiller hoping to find a clue as to the husband of this Barbara Mauk and where they lived. Unfortunately I found neither.
What I did find was her name mentioned twice, once it was spelled as Martz and in the other record it appeared to be Mak. Also of interest was at the Estate Sale of George Lockmiller, all of the children purchased property with the exception of George Lockmiller, Barbara Mak, and Rebecca Rebecca Backm. This would make me wonder if they weren’t living at some distance away and maybe didn’t make it for the sale.
I am thinking that MAYBE Barbara Mauk also went to Hawkins County, TN, and John would appear to be about the right age to be her husband. The others appear to be too young and could be children.
My suggestion would be to try to find a grantor deed from Hawkins County, TN for John Mauk that should give the name of his wife if she is still alive. I would be extremely interested in knowing if it was or was not Barbara. I don’t really know anyone who has researched the Mauks in Hawkins County, TN.
There is still no proof that the George Mauk in Barren County, KY is the
same as the one in Hawkins County, TN, but again, my suggestion would be to proceed with this presumption for the time being and as you gather more circumstantial evidence, you may locate something that more firmly
establishes that they are the same person.
