Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Armstrong, {1261} daughter of Elizabeth Galbraith {1199} and William Armstong III, {1216} born 12 February 1796, married James Amis {2740}. James was the son of Thomas Amis {2753} (1790-1871) and Lucy Haynes {2754} (1761-1841). After their marriage they continued to live in Carter’s Valley and Polly died there on 19 February 1868. James was born 6 November 1790 and died 14 October 1871. They are both buried in New Providence Cemetery, Stony Point, Tennessee.

This family has been reconstructed from the Hawkins County Census of 1850. The will of James Amis, Hawkins County Will Book II, page 99 is dated 14 August 1871 and names the following children as legatees: Sons Henry B. Amis, and Stanwix H. Amis, daughter Lucy Haynes Amis, Sarah Elizabeth, Annis P. Rogan, Julia Lyons, Louisana A. Henderson (who resides in Missouri) and Grandaughter Julia Frances Johnson, a minor orphan. This apparently is the daughter of Matilda Amis who married Jim Johnson.
