This is a North Carolina Land Grant, #401, issued in 1787 and proven in 1789 to my 4th great grandfather, Joseph Wallen (1734-1792) for 640 acres.  The land lay on the north side of Clinch River, extending to the top of Newman’s Ridge and into Lee County, Virginia.  The land was in Sullivan Co, NC; later Hawkins then Hancock Counties, Tennessee. It was signed by J. Glasgow for Gov. Caswell, which I understand indicates that it was a military grant for service in the  American Revolution.

State of North Carolina No. 401

To all to whom these presents shall come Greetings:

Know ye that for and in consideration of the sum of fifty shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted paid into our treasury by Joseph Wallins have given and granted and by these presents do give and grant unto the said Joseph Wallins a tract of land containing six hundred and forty acres lying and being in the county of Sullivan on the North side of Clinch River and bounded as follows: Beginning at the mouth of Lick’s branch at a sugar tree on this bank of the river thence extending down the river as it meanders two hundred and ninety eight poles to a box elder thence crossing the river south fifty five degrees west eighty poles to an ash on the side of a ridge thence on the north side of said ridge south twenty two degrees west thirty six poles to a white oak south three degrees west fifty two poles to a beach thence due west forty poles crossing the river to a beach and Spanish Oaks at the foot of a cliff; thence up the river north twenty degrees west seventy eight poles to a sugar tree and white oak.  Thence due west one hundred and fifty poles to a stake thence due north two hundred and twenty poles to a stake thence due east four hundred and thirty five poles to the beginning.  As by the plot hereunto annexed both appear together with all woods, waters, mines, minerals, hereditassments and appurtenances to the said land belonging or appertaining to both to the said Joseph Wallins his heirs and assigns forever yielding and giving to us such sums of money yearly or otherwise as our General Assembly from time to time may desire provided always that the said Joseph Wallins shall cause this grant to be registered in the Registers office of our said county of Sullivan within twelve months from the date hereof otherwise the same shall be void and of no effect.

In testimony whereof we have caused these our letters to be made Patent and our Great Seal to be hereunto affixed.  Witness Richard Caswell Esquire our Governor Captains General and Commander in Charge at Kinston the ninth day of August in this 11 year of our Independence AD 1787.
