Pvt. J. S. Lockhart – Was born in Grundy County Tn. in 1845. He joined the 16th Tennessee infantry Co. H on 5/18/61 during the reorganization he was found underage and discharged at Chattanooga in 1862. He then went on to join several Cavalry commands and was captured numerous times but managed to escape. He was with Col. Allen’s Cavalry Regiment when he was captured the first time. Was under the command of Capt. George Carter and was captured in Pikeville Tn. then escaped and joined Capt. Carson’s Scouts when he was captured on 8/19/63 in Sequatchie Valley, but escaped in McMinnville. One of Joseph’s greatest escapes was when he escaped the notorious Calvin Brixey who was known for killing his prisoners. Joseph finally joined with Gen. Wheeler and finished the war under his command. He married a woman named Lucy from Grundy they were married in Smith Co. He died on 12/2/1921 in Altamont his wife died 3/1936. They are buried in the Altamont City Cemetery.
