This index includes the names of every person mentioned in the oldest surviving Grundy County deed records. Some of these people were buyers and sellers of land, others were witnesses to deeds, and some were named in property descriptions as owners of adjoining property.

Deed records can be a useful genealogical research tool. Although most deeds are simple transfers of land based on a cash payment, others are much more involved. Some include lists of heirs, others are gifts “for love and affection,” and some reveal interesting details of business operations such as the resort at Beersheba Springs. Even the most basic deed can be useful in helping locate an ancestor in Grundy County on a specific date. And witnesses and adjoining property owners are often relatives of the buyer or seller.
