STEPHENS<\/strong> was born in the year 1818, in the State of North Carolina and in 1836 immigrated to Tennessee and settled in this county on the farm where he is now living.\u00a0\u00a0 He was the youngest of nine children born to the union of <strong>Hardie and Mary Stephens<\/strong>.\u00a0 He is a mechanic by trade and built the bridge on the Chattanooga Railroad when the road was first laid off.\u00a0 After this he followed the business of a millwright for about five years.\u00a0 He has also carried on farming in connection with his other occupations.<\/p>\n<p>May 27, 1839, he was married to <strong>Nancy Mullens<\/strong>, of this county, who was born September 21, 1818.\u00a0 This union resulted in the birth of ten children, two of whom are dead.\u00a0 The eight remaining are living in this county.\u00a0 Our subject has been quite successful and has accumulated considerable means.\u00a0 In politics <strong>Mr. Stephens<\/strong> is a Democrat and he and wife are leading members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.\u00a0 His health has been quite poor for a number of years, and he has not been able to see to any outdoor business for about six years.<\/p>\n<p>Transcribed by Kathryn Hopkins<\/p>\n<p>Goodspeed Publishing Co.\u00a0<i>History of Tennessee from the Earliest Time to the Present: Together with an Historical and a Biographical Sketch of Maury, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Bedford &amp; Marshall Counties, Besides a Valuable Fund of Notes, Reminescences [Sic], Observations, Etc., Etc<\/i>.
