{"id":880,"date":"2015-09-20T18:17:52","date_gmt":"2015-09-20T23:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/goodspeeds\/?p=880"},"modified":"2017-06-10T07:54:01","modified_gmt":"2017-06-10T12:54:01","slug":"william-mcgill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/goodspeeds\/william-mcgill\/","title":{"rendered":"McGILL, William"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WILLIAM McGILL,<\/strong> a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Bedford County, was born May 14, 1820.\u00a0 He is the son of <strong>James and Sallie (Parker) McGill.<\/strong>\u00a0 The father of our subject was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1787, and at an early day immigrated with his father to the United States and settled in Virginia, where he remained several years.\u00a0 He then moved to Rutherford County, Tenn.\u00a0 He was a soldier in the war of 1812, was in the battle of New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>He was married in 1816, and was the father of several children: <strong>Nancy, William, Lucy, Elizabeth, Sallie, Priscilla and James<\/strong>.\u00a0 The father died in 1860 and the mother in 1884.\u00a0 Our subject was reared on the farm, educated in the country schools, and in 1840 was married to <strong>Miss Mary Gardner.<\/strong>\u00a0 Eight children were the result of this union: <strong>John A., Sarah J., Robert P., Thomas B., Franklin, Lewis Cass<\/strong> (who died September 28, 1874), Bedford and Tennessee.\u00a0 In 1874 <strong>Mr. McGill<\/strong> was elected trustee of Bedford County, which office he held for two terms in a very able manner.\u00a0 He is a member of the Christian Church, owns a fine tract of land in the Twenty-third District. and is one of the representative men of the county.<\/p>\n<p>Transcribed by Kathryn Hopkins<\/p>\n<p>Goodspeed Publishing Co.\u00a0<i>History of Tennessee from the Earliest Time to the Present: Together with an Historical and a Biographical Sketch of Maury, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Bedford &amp; Marshall Counties, Besides a Valuable Fund of Notes, Reminescences [Sic], Observations, Etc., Etc<\/i>.
