Ed. Note: District No. 17 encompassed northeasternmost Giles, which in 1836 was at the corner of Maury, Bedford, Lincoln and Giles counties (the basis for the name of the town, Cornersville, incorporated in 1831 (Tennessee Acts of Assembly, 1831), and whose town lots are included below). In February 1836, Marshall County was created by an Act of the Tennessee Assembly, and organized in October of the same year. Marshall created from Maury, Bedford, Lincoln and Giles (apparently a very, very small part of Giles), and in 1870, Giles' County's District 17 was annexed to Marshall (See 1836 Civil Districts, The Maps Our Giles Ancestors Followed and 1836 Giles County Records).

** This entry reads "William Henderson's Heirs," with the apostrophe s ('s) and "Heirs" added later, which may explain why the entry also includes one white poll (if he died this same year, but after the tax collector had entered his name?).

Additional Notes: On 20 Jun 1837, Jeremiah Gant was of Marshall County and John L. Miller of Giles County when they conveyed to James S. Haynes of Giles, a "negro girl named Zan," for love and affection for Elizabeth N. Miller and Lucinda S. Miller, children of the sd. John L. Miller and grandchildren of Jeremiah Gant, being the children of Winney Moriah Miller, deceased, late the wife of said John L. and daughter of sd. Jeremiah. (Janell McCann's [URL to be added]. Jeremiah Gant is not on either the 1840 Giles or Marshall Census; J. L. Miller is on the Giles 1840, p. 130.
Of the living individuals on this list, those whose surnames are apparently (at a glance) missing from the 1840 Giles County Census are: Griffin Bayne, Isaac Bills, P. A. Brents, Henry Curry, John C. Ewing, John and John C. Gibbons, Wade Horton, Jonathan Huston, D.B. Kirsey, Epraim McCarver, Alexr. Norman, Tho. P. Plaister, Armistead Pole and Jna. Rothrock. Neither do any of them appear on the 1840 Marshall.
