Unfortunately, only the clerk's copy of the 1812 Giles County Tax List is extant. This copy is headed:
An Enumeration of all free Taxable inhabitants in the county of Giles, as returned to the Clerk of said County Court by the I...(?) App..(?) for that purpose, and concludes with A Copy. s/German Lester, Clerk of Giles Cty Ct, Somerset Moore, Presd. Justice.
The list consists of 25 single-column pages numbered 1 to 25 and renumbered 99-123, with each name preceded by a number beginning with 1 and ending with 1,056.
Despite this being a clerk's copy, we are fortunate that it was not alphabetized by the Clerk (as is too often the case). Although some sections were fair alphabetical (the surname alphabetized by first letter), others were not, and ultimately, the pattern developed into a minimum of six sections, five of which appear to be areas of the county (based on a combination of the ordering patterns and other records). The sixth section may belong to either the section preceding it or the section following.
We have therefore published the tax list in two formats, alphabetical and numerical, with the alphabetical list serving as an index to the numerical list, which has been sectioned and annotated
