JONES, SIMPSON, STILES/STYLES

The 1880 census of Giles Co, E. D. 113, p. 27, line 25. District 15 shows: Susan C. Jones (48, b. TN), Mary V. Jones (daughter)(11, b. TN); Robert B. Jones (son)(9, b. TN) and Edward S. Styles (son)(24, b. LA). I think these are all the children that Susan (SIMPSON)(STYLES) JONES had. I believe that both the sons died without issue, but I have been unable to learn what happened to Mary V. Jones. Does anyone have any information on her? Did she marry? Does she have descendants? When did she die? In CEMETERY RECORDS OF GILES COUNTY, TENNESSEE, by the Giles County Historical Society, I found tombstone records (Lynnwood Cemetery) for Sue C. Jones (1831-1906), Edward S. (Ned) Stiles (1856-1941) and Robert B. Jones (1870-1899)(Founder of R. B. Jones High School), but found no record for Mary V. Jones, leading me to conclude that she probably did marry. If she does have descendants, I would very much like to get in touch with them. Thanks for any help, Mary Gregg (MarySapp@aol.com)

YOUNG

Request any relative or ancestral info on Elizabeth "Lizzie" Young, b. Abt 1854 in TN. Mother also named Elizabeth(?) Young. Lizzie married William W. (Bill) Rea. Both are listed in 1880 census of Giles County, along with sons William Miron Rea (age 2) and Eddie (age 4 months). The census shows an Elizabeth Young (age 66) b. TN, also living in household. The family later moved to Van Zandt County, TX where they farmed for an extended period of time.

REA / RHEA

Seeking relatives and ancestral info about William W. (Bill) Rea b. Abt 1851, possibly AL or TN. Married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Young, b. Abt 1854, Giles County, TN. Both are listed in 1880 census of Giles County , indicating all 4 parents born in TN. Children listed in 1880 census include William Miron Rea (age 2) and Eddie (age 4 months), both born in Giles County. The family later moved to Van Zandt County, TX where they farmed for an extended period. I have found the surname spelled REA and RAY in later documents. The mother of Lizzie is shown as also shown in 1880 census as living in the household, also named Elizabeth Young, age 66. This suggests possible death of her (unnamed) husband.

WOLAVER, ERWIN, CLARK

Howdy folks! Thanks to all who've helped with my WOLAVER, ERWIN, and CLARK lines in Giles County. Does anyone have any info on early churches and hotels in Diana? My family has been involved in the Methodist church there since the late 1800's (1880's we think, but can't prove it). The church I am primarily interested in is what was originally known as Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church. It burned at some point (not sure of the year--can anyone confirm?), and was moved down into town, and the name changed to Diana United Methodist Church. Mt. Pleasant Cemetary is still on the hill on Diana Rd, across the street from the old Wolaver homeplace.
Also-- On Diana Rd, there was an old hotel. It was torn down in the late 40's or early 50's. My mother and her sister grew up in the hotel, and my grandfather, Steger Wolaver, built the new Wolaver homeplace on that site. I would be interested in any info on the hotel, especially the name of it! (No one can seem to remember.) Thanks!

ERWIN,CLARK,WOLAVER

Help! I am researching the ERWIN, CLARK, and WOLAVER families of Giles County. I've just started researching, and don't have lots of time. (I'm working full time, and also homeschooling my daughter, but I want the research to be completed eventually to pass on to her.) Any info anyone has on these families would be appreciated. Also--Will someone PLEASE explain to me the district system used for census records, tax records, etc. From the info given with the tax records, I can't figure out which district(s) my family lived in. The Erwins were originally in the Bradshaw community near Diana; my ggrandfather owned a store there. The Wolavers lived in Diana off of Cornersville Highway (I think--not sure about the road), and then in Pulaski. There are two Wolaver homeplaces I know of, both on that same road--one was originally an old hotel and was remodeled by my grandfather, Steger Wolaver. Thanks!

MERRELL, MERRILL

I am looking for any information for Barney MERRELL/MERRILL. I think the spelling was changed during his early years. B abt 1834. Lived in Pulaske, Tennessee. Wife Sarah E. He probably died prior to 1892. Sarah died about 1892. There were 10 children of whom Van Buren Merrill was the youngest. Van left home and went into the Army for the Spanish American war at age 17. He was born 1875. Have had some indication that Barney may have been born in Lincoln county. Any information about this family would be appreciated. Thanks Joy Merrill

HENSON, CLARK

Dear Researchers, I would like to correspond with the descendents of Margaret Josephine Henson and Robert Clark. These two were married I believe in Giles Co. in the 1860's. Margaret was the dau. of Nancy Henson who had land on the Maury-Giles line and who died in 1867. Nancy's husband may have been John Henson. Nancy's mother was Peggy Stuart who lived in Lincoln Co in 1830, and in Maury or Giles in the 1850 census. Nancy had siblings Hettie Gist, William Calvin Stewart, Calvin B. Stewart, and Mary Henson. Nancy's land was sold to N.H. Matthews to settle her debts. I would welcome all inquiries on this information.

BAILEY

Richard Bailey was my great-great grandfather. He was born in North Carolina in 1790 and he was Cherokee. I don't know the degree. His daughter, my great-grandmother, was Mary Margaret Wallace Bailey Garrigus, b. 1832 in Giles, Co., Tn., her tenth son, my grandfather, was born in 1874 in Pope Co.,Ark. His name was Sereno Hubastus "Jake" Garrigus. He died in 1973 and he told me of this connection. Because of his advanced age I believe he knew the history of his grandfather correctly. I would like to know the father of Richard Bailey and any information that is available on the Bailey family.
