This Wilder-Richardson research was begun in early 2010 after a conversation with a descendant of these two families. When my friend [Private] told me she was a Wilder and that her grandmother was Nancy Richardson, I was hooked on learning more about how her Richardsons might be related to my own Richardsons in Franklin County. Another descendant [Private] has the Wilder Bible and shared a copy of the family record with me.

In search of Nancy Richardson’s family, I began running the censuses and searching the usual genealogical resources.I found the Wilders and Richardsons in Coffee Co., Tennessee, Warrick and Pike Counties, Indiana, and some of them back to Coffee County. Some earlier Richardsons of this line were in the part of Franklin County that became Coffee County. A study of the 1850 Coffee County census revealed some of this Richardson family line. Obviously,Frances Richardson was the matriarch of the family. G.M. Richardson came together as I realized he was the Glenmore Richardson in the 1841 Coffee County State census and the ‘Glenn/G.M./Glenmore’ I had found in Indiana. A neighbor in the 1850 Coffee County census, Susan, wife of Willis MCCRAW, was revealed as a sibling through naming a son Glenmore. John, not proven, also seems obvious as a sibling.

There are Wilders on the Internet whose lineage doesn’t always seem to work date wise. The Internet account appears to have evolved from: Wilder And Some Connecting (Especially Some Ware) Families in the Southeastern United States of America, by William Murtha Wilder, 1124 Dawson Road, Albany, Georgia, August 15, 1945, Franklin County Historical Society collection.The book was useful in filling in some dates and places of migration.

The Dotson Cemetery is located in Roark’s Cove, Franklin County, Tennessee. This cemetery is rightfully the Partin Cemetery. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother are buried there. They are William Riley Richardson (b. 27 June 1839, d. 23 Dec. 1907, m. Martha Gipson).I am descended from Amos RICHARDSON (b. c1762, N.C., m. Elizabeth (maiden name unk.); Abel RICHARDSON (b. 1792/3, m. Mrs. Mary (maiden name unk.) SEGO, William Riley RICHARDSON; Callie Fonia RICHARDSON (b. 10 Sept. 1877, m. Robert E.D. Lee HENLEY).Also in this cemetery are: Malinda Partin Wilder, wife of John Henry Wilder, Lou Reed RICHARDSON, b. 28 Sept. 1904, d. 10 Dec. 1904, and Oscar WILDER son of J.D. and J.C.WILDER, b. 18 July 1887, d. 12 Sept.1887. My William Riley Richardson is buried in the Partin Cemetery because his daughter, Manerva Elizabeth RICHARDSON, married Harris PARTIN.son of Marion PARTIN and Mary Jane HILL. Another daughter, Maria Jennie RICHARDSON, married Willis BRANNAN whose mother-in-law was Martha PARTIN BRANNAN (Mrs. Albert BRANNAN). The connection is with the Partins, not with the Richardsons. There are not many stones in this cemetery.

Amos Richardson arrived in Franklin County by 1823 from Overton County. He lived in the Lost Cove of the Cumberland Mountain. After his death, Abel moved his family down to Alto-Roark’s Cove of Franklin County. William Riley Richardson lived in a house across from Mrs. Annie HILL on Rutledge Ford Road. My grandmother’s, brother, Willie RICHARDSON, is bur. at Prairie Plains in what is now Coffee County. My Richardsons are out of North Carolina, while the Richardsons of this little study are out of Virginia.

The following compilation took place in a short period of time, but over many hours. Some of the data is taken from my 30+ years project entitled: Franklin County, Tennessee Biographical and Historical Records Before 1860. I have not always expounded upon the spouse of the children given in the following sketches. More research is required to extend the ancestral lines.

   marriage. Elbert’s dates are from the Coffee County cemetery records and his Social Security. The cemetery book gives Esther’s death date on the same day as her husband. Did they die the same day, or did the transcriber type her death date wrong?

Francis Marion WILDER m. (2) Alice JACKSON, b. c1874, Tenn. ‘Jackson’ is given for her name in the Wilder book. No children by this marriage. Death record #50-02173, has a Mary Alice WILDER, b. 1874, d. 1 Feb. 1950, rural Coffee County, Parents: John BIBLES, mother’s name not given. Are these the same women. Need to check for an obituary.

1935 death record #20983 of Francis Marion gives birth date as 5 April 1856. I don’t know if this is a transcription error of the death record or the cemetery record. Both records should be checked.

1850 no Wilders show up on any local census. John was in the area as evidenced by the following record.

   John David Wilder’s death record gives his death date and place, age 80, Blacksmith, Widowed, Father John David [sic] Wilder, FCT, Mother not given.
5. Malissa Ellen WILDER, b. 22 June 1867, Franklin Co., Tenn., d. 6 June 1898; m. (1) James B. ROSS. No children.
   Malissa m. (2) Elmer BASIM of Cumberland, Maryland; bur. Baker Cem., Franklin Co., Tenn. They had: Hobert BASIM died in infancy and Frances “Fannie” BASIM m. Earl ROBERTS and lived Pelham, Grundy Co., Tenn.
   Also in this cemetery are: John WILDER b. 10 Feb. 1906, d. 8 May 1930 and Fannie S. b. 14 Jan. 1855, d. 2 Sept. 1906. [Fannie is Malissa’s step-mother.] 1910 Coffee Census of Francis Marion says Fannie BASIM niece. Usually, the relationship is to the head of household. The Wilder book gives the name as ‘Basin’ in error.

Don Hill <hilldonl [at] bellsouth [dot] net>provided Malissa’s middle name, correct name of her first husband, child Hobert, and verified the correct spelling of ‘Basim.’

Wilder’s Chapel extract from Internet posting by Don Hill “Wilder’s Chapel Congregational Methodist Church. The Wilder’s Chapel Church was started in 1898 by a missionary, a Mr. Hartgraves, who came here from Texas and lived with, or near, John Wilder. Another missionary, a Mr. Mannings, who also came from Texas, followed him and proceeded to set up additional Congregational Methodist churches on the mountain. A two-room parsonage was constructed for Mr. Mannings near John Wilder’s house. On June 22, 1901, John Wilder and his second wife, Fannie BOWENS, gave a half-acre of land for construction of a building that was to be used for a church and a school. Listed on the deed as trustees for the church were L.M. Partin, William Hill, Charley Stephens, John Wilder, and W.J. Lindsey. Following Mr. Mannings as pastor was a Mr. McBee, who was apparently from Franklin or Grundy County.” Note: William Alexander Henley and Nancy are my 3rd great-grandparents.jhp

If Nathaniel was born about 1760 to 1770 (according to the census), then he should have married about 1781 to 1791 or a little later. Men were at least twenty-one years or older to reach their majority and enter into a legal status. This seems to give credence to there being another wife before Elizabeth with children born in the late 1780’s or early 1790’s. There were four children on the 1820 census. Those children would have taken about eight years plus one year back for the marriage. Approximating nine years from 1820 would be 1811 minus twenty-one years for the father would make the father born about 1790––probably closer to 1770. Given his age from the census, I reason he would have had a first family.

William was 12 years old and bound to William STEWART to learn the trade of hatter. Ibid., p97, this indenture to Stewart was canceled in Nov. 1832 (page 129) and William, age 12 last January, was bound to Bryant B. THOMPSON. He enlisted in Seminole War when age 18. Ibid. p658, 1836 Joseph LITTLE was appointed William’s guardian. William lived in Alabama in 1840 and was in Franklin Co., Alabama in 1852.
   WILLIAM S. WILDER was born in Franklin County, Tenn., January 25, 1820,[sic 1812] being the fourth of five children born to Nathaniel and Elizabeth (McDuff) Wilder, who died in that State when William was a small lad. Our subject was raised on the farm in the county of his birth, receiving a common education. At the age of eighteen years he enlisted as a soldier in the Florida war, serving six months,rhen he continued farming in Tennessee until 1847. He then came to Warrick County, and lived in Boonville, following farming and teaming. In 1849 he rented a farm five miles northwest of Boonville, upon which he lived a year, when he bought a farm adjoining, upon which he has lived to the present time. He has been fairly successful in this industry and owns 100 acres of well-improved land upon which he resides in a comfortable residence. He has given an equal amount of land to that which he now owns to his children. He married Miss Milly Wildman, a native of Tennessee, by whom he is the father of eight children, six of whom are living, named Elizabeth, who married G. W. Bohannon; Sarah, who married Ryan Blankenship; Nathaniel; Nancy, who married Homer ALEXANDER; William J. and John S. Mr. Wilder’s wife died in April, 1869, and in October, 1870, he married Alice RINGHAM,* a native of England, by whom he’ is the father of one child named Mattie B. In politics he is a stanch Republican, and was a strong Union man during the war of the Rebellion, in which two of his sons enlisted, but he was detained from going by a large and dependent family.     The 1900 Coffee County census indicates there was a child by the name of Robert between Alfred and Edward. This appears to be a mistake in the census.

He was a pedestrian struck by a car. Robert Edward’s birth date on his Social Security application shows 12 Oct. 1899, Hillsboro, Tenn., as does the Family Record. Edward m. Irene Helen GOREK, b. 6 July 1913, Ohio, dau. of Stephen/Steve Joe GOREK (b. 27 Jan. 1880, Budapest, Hungary, d. 14 Apr. 1941, Painsville, Lake Co., Ohio) and Julia CYPAK. Gorek was originally CZIROLK and changed for ease of pronunciation. Irene’s family were immigrants from Hungary. The 1920 Lake Co., Ohio Census, 8 Jan., Precinct B, P.O. Painesville City: GOREK, Stephen 38 Hungary and parents Hungary. He owns his own property and it is mortgaged. he immigrated in 1907 and is listed “PA” which must be “Part Alien” and not naturalized. The mother tongue of the family was given as Maggor [sic Magyar]. Magyar /Majyarok is the name for Hungarians. Stephen was a carpenter. Julia was 34 born Hungary and her parents were born in Hungary. She was an Alien, Stephen, son born Michigan 10, William, son Michigan 7, Irene, dau. 7 Ohio, Rosy, dau. 3 /12 Ohio, John, son 1 4/12 Ohio. All the older individuals could read and write.
    Edward’s death certificate states he was divorced and gives his name as Edd aka Robert and Edward Robertson Wilder which information was given by his daughter. Note the 1900 census says there is a two year old Robert born in July 1897 and an Edward born in October. The film was bad here. Stephen’s second wife was Mary. Robert’s daughter told me her father was born in Franklin Co., Tenn. Note that Robert’s father was paying taxes in Coffee County in 1899 and is in Coffee County on the 1900 census.

In 1870 Pike Co., Indiana #172: RICHARDSON, Mary 65 Va, Thomas 20 Penn. Brother, Fielden, was #171. I believe the odds are less for Mary being a daughter who never married, or for her being a daughter who married another Richardson thereby keeping her surname. The odds are stronger for her being a daughter-in-law. I’m thinking Mary could be the widow of Giles, Jr.?

   I figured Peter Willis McCraw had to be named for Peter WILLIS (married Frances TATE) who died in Coffee County before 1840. I corresponded with a descendant of Harrison OWEN, neighbor to the Richardsons in Coffee County in 1850, who substantiated the relationship through Frances Tate and Susannah Tate being sisters. (Lavon & Norma Smith, lavnorma [at] brightok [dot] net.) Peter Willis McCraw was named for his uncle-in-law. Most of the Owen family were born in Virginia. There may be a further connection between these families and the Richardsons.

   Internet posting by Bobi Wright Devore: “Glenmore was born in 1816 in Virginia and died 1886 in Indiana. He and brothers, James, Fielding, and Reuben moved to Warrick County, Indiana about 1854. Their mother Frances and Mary arrived with them. Family story is that they were part of wagon train. Glenmore moved to Pike Co. in 1870 and had a farm of about 200 acres in section 28 or Monroe township. He is buried in Blackfoot Cemetery and was supposedly buried like Christ – without clothing and wrapped in a linen shroud- according to his wishes. He married Sarah Walker. Their daughter Elizabeth married my great grandfather, Albert BURDETTE. There has also been a family story that after Glenmore died the children argued over property settlement and some of them changed the name to Richeson, while some remained Richardson. However, the info that I found on Giles listed him as Richeson so I am somewhat inclined to believe that it is just a matter of different spelling!” NOTE: Not able to contact Bobi Devore.

NOTES: From a study of the 1850 Coffee County census of these Virginia born Richardsons, and some other individuals, I speculated Frances Richardson was the mother and the other Richardsons, listed above, were the children. I later found an Internet posting which provided the maiden name for Frances.
1841 Coffee Co., Tenn. State Census, Nathan NEIGHBOURS was in the neighborhood of Glenmore, Fielding and Reubin RICHARDSON. This spelling is interchangeable with the spelling ‘NABORS’.

COMMENT: I am bothered none of the Wilder-Richardson family named a child for “Giles.”

Giles RICHARDSON, Jr., b. 1794/1804, d. . He was a son of Giles RICHARDSON and Frances PACE.

He m ?Mary , b. c1795, Virginia, d. ____________________, Indiana.
Mary was 55 years old, born Virginia, living in the home of G.M. Richardson (Glenmore) in Warrick Co., Ind. in 1860. The 1850 census date of Mary’s birth, 40, would have made her born about 1810. This would not have been correct for her to have the young child in the census below, so I believe the 1795 date is more correct.

1840 Reuben is not head of household, so he I am assuming he is with his parents.

Reuben lived next door to William S. WILDER in 1860. This William S. Wilder was son of Nathaniel Wilder, Sr. and Elizabeth McDuff. See his sketch. According to this census, Reuben took his family to Indiana about 1854/1855. The names of the children could indicate states he passed through, that is, Granville [N.C.?], Georgia, Murry [Georgia?], and Warrick Indiana.

7. Benjamin RICHARDSON, b. 1861, Warrick Co., Ind.; m. 13 Aug. 1882, Davidson Co., Tenn., Georganna AUSTIN. He was 21 and she was 16 at their marriage.

I could not find any administration or settlements for Reuben in Coffee County.

 

I find this Revolutionary War application interesting in the migration.
Thomas RICHARDSON, Vir. Militia, b. 1762, Loudoun Co., Vir. He lived Bedford County when enlisted militia. After war, moved to Wilkes Co., then to Elbert Co., Geo. he then moved Laurens Co. SC, then Mecklenburg Co. NC, Wash. Co Tenn, Lincoln Co. Ky and 1812 Perry Co. Ind. Later moved to Warrick Co., Ind. He married 1782 Elizabeth ____. Their child Jacob RICHARDSON. Thomas died 15 Jan. 1850 Warrick County, (pen #$8767).
