Peter Turney’s 1st Regiment – Company H

Company H was organized from men around Shelton’s Creek, in Lincoln County, and were enrolled on 29 April in that County before joining the rest of the regiment at Winchester shortly thereafter. It was officially mustered into the Confederate Army on 8 May 1861 at Lynchburg, VA, with the nickname “The Shelton’s Creek Volunteers” or “The Shelton Creek Boys”. Muster rolls had the additional information: note for Company H for September & October 1861: “The company has been stationed at Camp Fisher, Prince William County, except from 1 October to 18th at which time it was at Camp Jones, during which time it has been engaged in drilling regularly both in company and battalion. Enrolled 25 Sep 61 at Fayetteville; joined the company at Camp Fisher, VA, 5 Oct 61; admitted to General Hospital No. 18, Richmond, VA; did not re-enlist at the regimental re-organization on 27 Apr 62 as was exempt from the conscription act being under age; discharged 27 July 62. He applied for pension from Coffee Co. after 1891, #4617.*

COOPER, William B. Pvt. *Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Sheltons Creek, aged 20; killed in action during Cedar Run, VA, 9 Aug 62. Brother of John W. of this Company. He was shot fatally while the regiment was charging across the wheat field at Cedar Run. He was buried there, but was taken up and buried by Joe LUTTRELL and Thaddeus WHITE of his company both killed soon afterwards.*

CUNNINGHAM, Joel. Pvt. *Born 18 August 1829. Enrolled 25 Sep 61 at Fayetteville; joined the company at Camp Fisher, VA, on 2 Oct 61 for the unexpired term of service. Believed to have left the army and returned to Lincoln County with his brother Peter as a result of their houses being burnt by Federal soldiers and continued as “bushwhackers”. Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Georges Store, aged 23; discharged 9 Feb 62 at Camp Fisher, VA on surgeon’s certificate of disability, pneumonia.* Judy White <srwhite2 [at] bellsouth [dot] net>says her great-grandfather was John T Mcgehee and is buried in the Baker Cemetery near New Market AL. This is the cemetery of his son-in-laws family. It has an iron cross of the CSA on his grave.
