Company H was organized from men around Shelton’s Creek, in Lincoln County, and were enrolled on 29 April in that County before joining the rest of the regiment at Winchester shortly thereafter. It was officially mustered into the Confederate Army on 8 May 1861 at Lynchburg, VA, with the nickname “The Shelton’s Creek Volunteers” or “The Shelton Creek Boys”. Muster rolls had the additional information: note for Company H for September & October 1861: “The company has been stationed at Camp Fisher, Prince William County, except from 1 October to 18th at which time it was at Camp Jones, during which time it has been engaged in drilling regularly both in company and battalion.
