Peter Turney’s 1st Regiment – Company D

Company D was organized at Ridgeville (now in Moore County but then a part of Franklin County) in March 1861 and joined the Regiment at Winchester the next month. The men were from Moore County (then Franklin County) and were nicknamed the “Ridgeville Hornets”. Officers at the organization were: Capt., Littleberry N. SIMPSON; 1st Sgt., John H. ANTHONY, Robert H. 3rd Sgt. He was s/o William H. and Elizabeth ANTHONY.~ *Born in Bedford County 1838, the oldest son. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 23; wounded at Gettysburg, PA, 1 July 63; captured at hospital 5 July 63; received at DeCamp General Hospital, Davids Island, New York Harbor, July 63; admitted 10 Aug 64 for amputation of left leg. He died at Victoria, Texas, 30 January 1909, aged 72 years.*

ANTHONY, Rody S. Pvt. Brother of Robert H. *Born 1841 in Bedford County on the waters of Thompson Creek. *Enr. 1 Nov 61 at Ridgeville; wounded in knee at Chancellorsville, VA, 3 May 63; captured at Gettysburg, PA, 3 July 63; amputated left thigh; took the oath and released 8 June 65; dark complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, 5’7″; residence Franklin County. He took the train to Tullahoma and arrived home on 10 June 1865. Applied for pension from Moore Co. after 1891, #11402. He was alive, hale and hearty, and living near Tullahoma in 1922, then aged 82.*

AWALT, William J. 1st Ltn./Capt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 23; succeeding Littleberry N. SIMPSON he was promoted to Capt. 18 Feb 62 and was succeeded by John H. BEVELL as 1st Ltn.; he submitted his resignation on 12 July 62 with the reason that he had not been able to perform his duty for the past two months due to his lungs being seriously affected; resigned 27 July 62. He later served as Capt. with Company D of the 23rd Infantry Battalion, which had been organized at Ridgeville on 7 Nov 62 and was killed during the Atlanta campaign as W.J. Arvalt.*

BEVELL, John H. 1st Sgt./Capt. He was b. c1831, Franklin Co., TN, s/o James BEVEL and ?Mary POE?. He m. Isabella Mahala BAGGETT.~ *Residence Franklin County, sallow complexion, dark hair, gray eyes, 6′. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 32; promoted to Capt. on the resignation of William AWALT, 27 July 62, succeeded as Ltn. by N.G. NORVELL; wounded at Gettysburg, PA, 3 July 63; captured at Petersburg, VA, 19 Aug 64; took the oath and released 17 June 65.*

BOLEN, Henry C. Pvt./4th Cpl. Pen. #2161. He went early 1861 until appomatox, returned home found afflicted father & mother. Father was in conf. Army and has died and he is taking care of his 84 year old mother. He was b. 1841, Lincoln Co., TN. Wife about 59, res. near Tullahoma, Moore Co., TN; joined 9th IL Cav. In order to escape prison. Two brothers in same comp. He has 1 boy and 3 girls.~ * Residence, Franklin County, light complexion, light hair, brown eyes, 5’8″, carpenter. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 18; wounded in the leg at Fredericksburg, VA, 13 Dec 62; captured at Falling Waters, MD, 14 July 63; exchanged 17 Mar 64; present 30 Apr to 31 Aug 64, detailed as Herdsman of Beef; had taken the oath 8 Dec 64. Captured again Mar 65 near Petersburg, VA; joined Company F, 9th IL Cav; deserted 27 Oct 65 at Selma, AL. He stated he deserted about 1 Apr 65 and returned to his command in Confederate army; discharged at close of war. “At the surrender, I feared that I might be recognized by the U.S. soldiers arrested and tried for desertion, so with about 1000 others tied white slips to our bayonets like the payrolled soldiers, joined in with them and made my way home.” Due to his being a deserter from the Union Army, his application for a Federal pension in 1902 was denied.*

BYROM, Henry John Pvt/2nd Ltn. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 21; wounded at Sharpsburg, MD, 17 Sept 62; wounded in the arm at Chancellorsville, VA; retired 23 Dec 64. Shows in application as Joe BYROM, born 31 Jan 1840 in Franklin Co., wounded at Sharpsburg in left shoulder and in right forearm at Chancellorsville, when he was retired from service. He applied for pension from Bedford Co., 4 Oct 1891. His doctor was E.Y. SALMON who had previously been in Company E of the regiment. BYROM, James W. Pvt. *Residence Bedford County. As a result of the last wounding he lost his hand; captured at Martinsburg, VA, 15 July 63 while waiting on wounded; paroled and transferred for. CHAMBERS, Elijah Jackson Pvt./3rd Sgt. He was a s/o Galbreath CHAMBERS and Nancy GLASSCOCK. He m. Lucy Caroline HENDRICKS.~ *Born Franklin Co., 20 June 1838, residence Franklin County, fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, 5’10”, farmer. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 22; detailed as wagoner, teamster; wounded severely in the abdomen at Second Manassas, VA, Aug 62; appears on a list of prisoners taken and paroled at Warrenton, VA, 29 Sep 62; wounded on furlough; absent Jan & Feb 63; wounded at the Wilderness, VA, 6 May 64; retired 8 Sep 64; signed the oath at Nashville on 22 May 65 had surrendered at Greenville on 1 May 65; filed a pension application on 25 July 1903, #5250, was then living at Shiloh, Montgomery Co., married.*

CHILDS, Bennett Walker Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Ridgeville, aged 34; wounded during the Seven Days Battles around Richmond, VA, 26 June – 1 July 62; discharged 22 July 62 by reason of his age, being a non-conscript (over-age) and returned to Franklin County. He was b. 18 February 1827 near Huntsville, Madison County, AL, 5’8″, fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair. Graduated from the Hygeio-Therapeutic College in New York City as a hydrotherapeutic or water-cure doctor 13 April 1858. The following month he established a practice in the Harmony community in Franklin County. After the war he located in Rienzi, Mississippi, possibly where his wife had family. He then travelled on to New Orleans before finally sailing for Venezuela where he died 25 September 1867 from exposure and fever. He was a half-brother to Henry T. CHILDS also of this Company.*

CHILDS, Henry T. Pvt. He was b. 18 July 1841, Lincoln County. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester for twelve months, aged 19. He was severely wounded in the leg. He was absent sick until deserted Aug 64. He went home to recuperate for twelve months and then joined the Forrest Escort Company where he took part in numerous cavalry skirmishes until he was paroled with the rest of Forrest’s command at Gainesville, AL. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1873 and served in that capacity for 21 years. He was elected to represent Lincoln County in the General Assembly for the term 1913-1915. He applied for pension fromLincoln Co. after 1891, #10028. He wrote a number of articles on his war experiences which were reprinted in the “Fayetteville Observer” in 1917. He died 15 December 1920 of burns.He served with Turney’s First TN Regiment in Virginia, having enlisted when he was only 18 years of age. He was wounded and sent home and after recovery was a member of Forrest’s Escort and surrendered at Gainesville, AL. He was bur. in the family grave yard. He was survived by one son and two daughters – Mr. A.T. CHILDS, Mrs. E. H. CUNNINGHAM and Mrs W.A. SMITH. He died at age 79.*
