*William H. Woodruff, a descendant of Isaac Anderson Caldwell, has discovered an error in the previous account of Isaac’s service record. Apparently, some papers were filed under the wrong man. -JHP.
Mr. Woodruff says, “The deserter was “J. C. Caldwell”. Copyists frequently are confused by the letters “I” and “J”. J. C. Caldwell is described on his oath document as 5’9″, blue eyes, while the document that we *know* applies to Isaac Anderson Caldwell (the record of his oath dated June 24 1865) describes him as 5″11 1/4″, light hazel eyes. Additionally, on the Dec ’64 oath, J. C. Caldwell lists his homeplace as Washington Co., not Franklin Co., and he is apparently illiterate as he signs the oath with “his mark”. It is absolutely clear that Isaac Anderson Caldwell could write well (we have several of his letters). Finally, Isaac Anderson Caldwell is noted as “present” in Nov and Dec ’64 on two different muster rolls. Also, it seems manifestly improbable that somebody would desert in late ’64, be imprisoned in Illinois at the end of the year, then trek almost 1000 miles back to Petersburg in time to be captured at Hatcher’s Run as the Confederacy was falling apart. I conclude that “J. C.” was a different Caldwell (who does not, however, appear on the 1st TN roster in “Tennesseeans in the Civil War”).
On another detail, the record of Isaac Anderson Caldwell’s capture at Warrenton at the end of Sept ’62 notes that he was “detailed nurse”, and the earlier company muster roll says he was “Detailed to hospital”. It seems reasonable to assume that he got this detail, and was subsequently furloughed after his parole, at least in part to take care of his brother AJ who was badly wounded at 2nd Manassas. According to the muster roll he was on furlough for the rest of 1862 thus apparently missed Antietam and Fredricksburg, but was back at the beginning of ’63.” <w00dy [at] earthlink [dot] net>
