Peter Turney’s 1st Regiment – Company B

Company B was organized in late April 1861 from men in Franklin and Bedford Counties. The officers at the organization were:

Capt., John E. BENNETT; 1st Ltn. George W. EDWARDS; 2nd Ltns., Carter WOOD, Robert R. ENOCHS; 1st Sgt., Thomas DANIEL; 2nd Sgt., Duncan CAMPBELL; 3rd Sgt., William ANDERSON; 4th Sgt., Elijah C. McLAUGHLIN; 1st Cpl., Abraham EVANS; 2nd Cpl.,William ENOCHS; 3rd Cpl., James ROLLINS; 4th Cpl., William S. DANIEL.

Muster roll information from Compiled Service Records are available from enlistment (April 1861) until November & December 1861 then September & October 1862 until November & December 1864. Records therefore of the Company re-organization on 27 April 1862 are not available for perusal and certainly many of the men may have returned home at the expiration of their original year of service. – Barry Crompton

ALLEN, William – Pvt. *Born Coffee County; aged 48 years, 5’7 1/2″, dark complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair, well digger; Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 42; discharged 26 Aug 61 at Camp Jones near Manassas, VA, for disability. He applied for pension from Rutherford Co. after 1891, #356.*

ALLEN, William C. – Pvt. *Residence Coffee Co., dark complexion, dark hair, dark eyes, 5’7″; Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 18; wounded in thigh at Sharpsburg, MD, 17 Sep 62; captured at Antietam (Sharpsburg), 28 Sep 62, after the battle and paroled at Fort McHenry, MD, 13 Oct 62 when he was sent to Fort Monroe, VA, for exchange; taken prisoner at Gettysburg, PA, 1 July 63; sent to Fort Delaware, DE; took oath about 7 Dec 64; exchanged 27 Feb 65; sent to Chattanooga 14 Apr 65; signed the oath 15 Apr 65 as having deserted at Richmond, VA, 4 Mar 65.*~William Calvin ALLEN’s, b. c1844, application as a soldier of Montague Co., TX, states he served in the 1st TN Confederates, Co B for four years and then six months in prison after the war. He said he never signed the oath after the war. His pension history is about 22 pages long (Texas State Library and Archives Commission, P.O. Box 12927, Austin, TX 78711- 2927, pension #7909.) A letter was written from Monteagle, Marion Co., TN to TX requesting the TN application as he went to live with a sister since he went blind and needed help. His sister, Mrs. C.M. FOSTER, was willing to provide such help. He had not seen her in 44 years. An affidavit of T.H. ALLEN states that he had been raised with W.C. and knew him his whole life. He is named as being from Valley Creek, Fannin Co., TX. This from Carolyn Atkinson.

ALLISON, Samuel H. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19; admitted Hosp. Richmond, VA, on 30 Mar 62 for rheumatism, returned to duty 23 Apr 62.*

ANDERSON, Benjamin F. – Pvt./4th Cpl. He was b. 11 Mar. 1841, Franklin Co., TN, d. 1908, FCT. He m. 22 Aug. 1867, Franklin Co., Elizabeth NEVILLE, b. 1849, Coffee Co.; widow’s pension, #2191.~ *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 20 , fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, 5’7″. Caught measles at Lynchburg, VA; shot in the lower part of the left lung by a spent ball which broke a rib at the Wilderness, VA, May 64; furlough renewed at Hosp. in Tupelo, MS; not discharged because war was over while he was still home; took oath at Nashville on 23 Feb. 65 to prevent going to prison. His mailing address was care of the Elk River Post Office, Franklin Co. Applied for pension from Elk river, Franklin Co.18 Mar 1903, #4775. A supplementary application was filed in 1905.*

ANDERSON, William – 3rd Sgt./Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 24; died as a result of a wound received at Chancellorsville, VA, 1-4 May 63; bur. at Fredericksburg battlefield Cem., VA.*

ARNOLD, Nathan – Pvt. *Residence Hawkins Co., light complexion, light hair; blue eyes, 5’5. Enlisted 17 Nov 64 at Bristol, TN by Major JOHNSTON; deserted 20 Dec 64; signed oath at City Point, VA, 23 Dec 64.*

AYERS, Thomas L. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 25.*

BELL, James M. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61, Winchester, aged 22; admitted 30 Mar 62 to Chimborazo Hosp. No. 3, Richmond, VA; returned to duty 22 Apr 62.*

BENNETT, John E. – Captain. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 36; resigned 11 Dec 61; succeeded by Thomas DANIEL.*

BENNETT, John P. – *Born Rutherford County, 23 Dec 1847; Enr. and captured during the Wilderness, VA; paroled at Richmond, VA. After the war he was the commanding officer of the Pierce B. ANDERSON Camp #173, United Confederate Veterans at Tullahoma, before he moved to Nashville. He died of heart disease at the Tennessee Soldier’s Home, near Nashville, in December 1909; bur. in Tullahoma, TN “where his wife resides”.*

CAMPBELL, Duncan – 2nd Sgt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 28; reduced to Pvt.; admitted to General Hosp. Camp Winder, Richmond, VA, on 13 Aug 62 with diarrhoea; returned to duty 22 Sep 62; sick since 2 Jan 63 at General Hosp.; deserted at Camp Gregg, VA, 2 Mar 63; replied to the 1890 veteran’s Census stating that he had served as Sergeant from 26 Apr 62 (?) to 26 Sep 63. COILE, William S. – Pvt. *Residence New Market, East TN; dark complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, 5’10 1/2″. Enr. 29 Feb 64 at Greenville; taken prisoner at the Wilderness, 6 May 64; sent to Point Lookout, MD; appears on a roll of prisoners of war at Elmira, NY,”was taken from his home in East Tennessee and forced in to the Rebel army. Got away and came into the Union lines on the 6th May 1864. Has always been a Union man and has four brothers in the U.S. Army, wishes to take the oath and return to East Tennessee”. COLLINS, George – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Feb 64 at Greenville, east Tennessee conscript; sick, returned to duty 17 Feb 65; surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA, 9 Apr 65.*

COLWELL, John – Pvt. *Enr. 14 Nov 64 at Bristol, east Tennessee conscript; deserted on 20 Dec 64 and never paid.*

COTHRAN, Benjamin F.- Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 28; shot in the back at Fredericksburg, VA, 13 Dec 62; deserted 2 Mar 63 having received a furlough of indulgence for twenty five days and had never returned; appears on a roll of prisoners at Military Prison, Alton, IL; captured at Franklin, Ala., on 22 Feb 63 and received at Alton on 12 Mar 63; exchanged at City Point, VA.*

CROSS, James W. – Pvt. *Born Clarke County, North Carolina, 5’10”, dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair, farmer. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 52; discharged 27 July 62 by reason of being over age. According to an article in CV, he was detailed to the Quarter master’s Dept. but was wounded at Fisher’s Hill, VA, 22 Sept 64, and had never recovered from the wound. In 1895 he was 86 years of age and was reported as being in the almshouse at Hagerstown, MD. He was admitted to the Soldier’s Home at Pikesville, MD, in 1896 and died there on 8 October. One J.W. Cross is shown as a Pvt. in Company D, 19th Cavalry Regiment. Residence – Hagerstown, Washington County, MD, member of Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home.*

Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19; replaced Thomas DANIEL as Capt. at Yorktown; wounded in face at Sharpsburg, MD, 17 Sep 62; given a 60 days furlough from 24 Aug 63, residence Chattanooga; 6 Oct 63 admitted to Richmond, VA Hosp.with gunshot wound to left hand; captured at Petersburg, VA, 2 Apr 65 and sent to Johnson’s Island, OH; released on oath 18 June 65.*

ERSKINE, John T. – Pvt. *Born Williamson County, light complexion, black eyes, dark hair, 5’10”, farmer. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 29; slight wound in thigh at Second Manassas, VA; chronic rheumatism; wounded 5 May 64 at the Wilderness, VA, blinded in both eyes.*

EVANS, Abraham – 1st Cpl. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19 years.*

FERRELL, James A. – Pvt. *Born 1840 in Coffee County. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 20; shot in elbow at Chancellorsville, VA, 3 May 63, left arm amputated just below shoulder; paroled at Lynchburg, VA, 13 Apr 65. He applied for pension from Tullahoma 25 May 1891, #50. His first wife was deceased at this time; later remarried as his widow asked for a pension in 1910. He was surrendered and paroled at Lynchburg, VA, 13 April 1865.*

FLETCHER, Jeptha P. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester aged 21; shot in foot at Fredericksburg, VA, 13 Dec 62; deserted 25 Aug 64.*

FOWLER, Henry – Pvt. *Residence Nashville. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 30; taken prisoner near Greencastle, PA, 5 July 63; paroled and exchanged at Camp Lee, near Richmond, VA; taken prisoner at the Wilderness, VA, 6 May 64 [also shows as taken prisoner at Ely’s Ford, 2 May 64]; sent to Point Lookout, MD, and then transferred to Elmira, N.Y., 15 Aug 64; surrendered 10 Apr 65 at Richmond, VA; signed the oath 16 Apr 65 and given transportation pass to Nashville. He applied for pension from Van Buren Co., Arkansas, #1032, on 6 July 1892. He died 1 December 1903; his widow, Mary A. FOWLER, applied for a pension on 5 August 1904.*

FRAZIER, John – Pvt. *Enr. 19 Feb 64 at Greenville by Major Johnson for the duration of the war, east Tennessee conscript; on furlough of disability since 22 Dec 64.*

FRY, Isaac M. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19; discharged 9 Oct 61 at Camp Fisher near Dumfries, VA, for disability from typhoid fever. He applied for pension from Cheatham Co. after 1891, #9774.*

GAINES, James H. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19; gunshot wound of right arm, at Fredericksburg, VA, 13 Dec 62; deserted on or about 7 Aug 63, having been furloughed to Tennessee from that date, presumably not able to return to regiment.*

GREEN, Jason – Pvt. *Born Bedford County, 5’10”, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, farmer. Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 26 [although 32 on re-enlistment paper 7 Aug 62]; absent Sept & Oct 62.* ~Descendant Lisa GRIMES, Snail mail to P.O Box 1439, Goldendale, WA 90620, is 2x great-granddaughter of Jason and 2x great grand niece of Leighton GREEN, his brother. Lisa says that Jason was born 28 Mar. 1831 and that Jason, and his brother, Leighton, were actually Bedford County residents. The GREEN properties all clustered at the NW boundary line of Bedford Co. – almost in Coffee Co.

GREEN, Leighton – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 21; deserted 25 Apr 63 at Camp Gregg.*Leighton died on 19 Sept 1863, Battle of Chicamauga, Catoosa Co., GA At the present time……… his place of burial is unknown.

HAGGARD, William G. – Pvt. *Born in Coffee County, 5’11”, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, farmer. Enr. 29 Apr 61, aged 19 [actually 17]; discharged 27 July 62 as being under age. Messed with Moore JORDAN, Joe B. MARSHALL, James W. SMITH, Frank MORGAN and William J. MUSE of the same Company. Survived the war and was known to be alive in 1907.*

HAINES/HAYNES, Joseph C. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 19; died 5 Jan 62 at Camp Fisher, VA, with dropsy of the brain (arachnitis).*

HAINES/HAYNES, William W. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 45; discharged 1 Dec 61 because of rheumatism.*

HOLLAND, James R.K.P. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 21; discharged on disability, at Richmond, VA, 2 June 61.*

HOLT, Jacob – Pvt. He m. (1) Elizabeth BYROM (2) Lucinda HOLDER. He m. four times and had 27 children. He was in the Seminole War. He d. 29 Dec. 1874.~ *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 62; mustered in at Lynchburg, VA, 8 May 61; presumed to have been discharged as overage.* A great-greatgrandson is Jack HOLT.

HORDE, George – Pvt. *Enr. 23 Aug 63 at Knoxville, east Tennessee conscript; deserted 21 Feb 64.*

HUBBARD, James D. – Pvt./Lt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 23; wounded accidentally 5 Sept 62; admitted 7 Feb 65 to Stuart Hosp., Richmond, with gunshot wound to left shoulder, died 20 Feb 65.*

JOHNSON, Andrew E. – Pvt. *Residence, Greenville, TN., dark complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, 5’9 1/2″. Enlisted 27 Aug 63 from Camp of Instruction, east Tennessee conscript; taken prisoner at the Wilderness, VA, 6 May 64; sent 23 July 64 to Elmira, NY, from Point Lookout, MD, [stated at Elmira that he “was conscripted, taken by force from home, carried to the army and put into the fight. Desires to remain north”]; released 15 May 65.*

JOHNSON, Augustus S. – Pvt. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 22; died in Winchester, VA, 18 July 61 of fever/typhoid pneumonia and buried in the Stonewall Jackson Cem.*

JOHNSON, William – *Pvt. The U.S. Adjutant General wrote to the Comm. of pensions, Austin, Texas, that William JOHNSON, Pvt., Co B, Turney’s 1st, had been enlisted 18 Feb 64, captured at Wilderness, 22 May 64 (?) and was released from Elmira, NY, 24 Jan 65 on taking the oath of allegiance. Received back from Comm. Pens to say that the soldier testifies he was not in the battle of the Wilderness, that he was never in Elmira, NY, and that he surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA and that he never took the oath of allegiance. “No Wm. JOHNSON other than the one herewith reported on has been found in any organizations designated the 1st TN Inf, CSA. Records show that the 1st TN surrendered under Maj. Felix BUCHAN [BUCHANAN] and that William JOHNSON’S name was not on the surrender list.” No further information was found. Residence, Union County, TN, ruddy complexion, black hair, gray eyes, 5’10”. Enr. 18 Feb 64 at Greenville, TN., present March & Apr 64 until taken prisoner at the Wilderness [Bulls Church], 22 May 64; sent from Point Royal, VA, to Elmira, NY, 23 July 64; released 26 Jan 65 when he signed the oath of allegiance.*

Remarried 6 Dec 1892 to Annie R. YELL. Believed to have died after 1907 when MUSE recorded his memoirs which also states that Doctor Pearson J. Monroe JORDAN volunteered to take care of MUSE after he had been wounded at Gettysburg, PA, 1-3 July 1863. It is surmised that he accompanied MUSE to Federal prison. In 1923 his widow applied for a pension.*

I am proud of them both, and have tried to be a good soldier in both armies … I was captured in the last fight at Gettysburg, PA, on the 3rd day of July, 1863, and carried to Fort Delaware. Here I stayed twenty months, and was sent to Richmond just before it fell, and was paroled.” *

His memoirs written in 1907 are in TSLA. “… While on a visit to Uncle Asa Muse near Tullahoma in March 1861 I enlisted in a Tullahoma company [Company B]… we marched to the railroad and boarded some freight cars at Decherd and headed for Lynchburg, Virginia… camped on the outskirts of the city of Richmond… ordered to Harper’s Ferry… then on to Winchester and went into encampment near Darkstown… marched to Piedmont station and took a train for Manassas… went into winter quarters at Dumfries… ordered to Yorktown… fought in battle of Seven Pines [31 May 1862] and received a minie ball in right thigh… sent to Hosp. at Richmond… took part in the capture of Harper’s Ferry and battle of Sharpsburg… shot in left side and left thigh and left at field Hosp. where made prisoner of war… taken to Baltimore for exchange and returned to Richmond about 1 November 1862… remained there until about February 1, 1863, when rejoined the regiment at Fredericksburg… fought in the battle of Chancellorsville and received two slight wounds… began the campaign into Pennsylvania in June 1863, wounded at Gettysburg and remained for eighteen days in the field Hosp….” He remained in prison until 4 March 1865. He had enlisted in Winchester on 29 Apr 61 as Pvt., aged 22; re-enlisted 27 Apr 62 at Yorktown, VA, for a further two years and was promoted to Ltn. of Comp. B. He was wounded eleven times. After capture at Gettysburg sent to officers prison Johnson’s Island, Sandusky, Ohio. He applied for pension from Bedford after 1891, #10998. Known to be alive in 1913. His service record shows as: Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester as Pvt., aged 22; promoted to 2nd Ltn.; gunshot wound to the thorax at the battle of Gettysburg, PA, 1 July 63 and captured; paroled at Johnson’s Island and forwarded to Point Lookout, MD, for exchange, 14 Mar 65.*
