ZACHARIAH N. CARROLL, S4834 Company D, 44th TN Inf., Sgt.

  • David Smith from Baytown, TX sent this to me. He says, “I recently received copies of Zachariah Carroll’s application for CSA pension from TN as well as his wife’s application – both of which were rejected – and received a big surprise . . The Zachariah N. Carroll who served as a Sgt. in Co.D of the CSA 44th TN Inf. – COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE the man buried here in Baytown, TX and that IN SPITE OF THE FACT his grave here in Baytown has a VA headstone stating that he served in this outfit!  Note: the Z. Carroll who served in the 44th: (1) died on 6/1/1905 in Franklin Co., TN, (2) had lived in TN all his life & (3) was married to “Mary J. (Miller) Carroll.” The Z. Carroll buried here in Baytown: (1) died on 1/29/1878, (2) is buried hundreds of miles from TN & (3) was married to “Susan (Clark) Carroll.” Bottom line – I’m fully persuaded now that someone laid down a VA marker here in Baytown ON THE WRONG MAN’S GRAVE. Thanks for the dialogue – your e-mail made me wonder – and receiving these applications confirmed it! I believe you helped bring to light a very bad mistake here. Thank you!
