Peter Turney’s 1st Regiment – Company F

Company F was organized from men around Franklin County and was mustered into Confederate service on 29 April 1861. It was nicknamed the “Salem Invincibles”. Service record muster rolls are available from April to December 1861 and then November 1862 until December 1864. Officers at organization were: Capt., Clement Arledge; 1st Ltn., James H. ARLEDGE, Clement Captain. He was b. 1 June 1826, Franklin Co., TN, d. 16 Jan. 1892. He was s/o Clement ARLEDGE and Martha GINN. He m. eliza Mary ROSEBOROUGH.~ *Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Franklin County, aged 36; term expired on 27 Apr 62 and as he temporarily lost sight in both eyes he resigned his commission and was succeeded by John BELL; eventually blind in one eye; he returned to Franklin County and was clerk of the County court for 12 years and clerk and master of the Chancery Court.*

ARNETT, William Richard Pvt. *Born 28 May 1848 in Tiffin County, MS Enrolled 29 Sep 61 at Winchester by R.B. Rogers; taken prisoner at Gettysburg, PA, 1 July 63; took oath and sent to City Point, VA, for exchange; light complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, 5’8″, residence Franklin County. In battles at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He applied for pension from Hardeman Co. after 1891, #15521.*

ASHLEY, Michael Pvt. *Born in Franklin County, 5’9″, fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, farmer. Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 33; detailed as nurse on list of Prisoners taken and paroled at Warrenton, VA, 29 Sep 62; wounded in action with gunshot wound to head at Fredericksburg, VA, 13 Dec 62; died 15 Dec 62 as a result of wounds.*

BAXTER, James T. 3rd Cpl./Pvt. *Enrolled 29 Apr 61 at Winchester, aged 32; sick; taken prisoner at Gettysburg, 1 July 63; paroled until exchanged at U.S. Army General Hospital, Chester, PA; sent to City Point, VA, 17 Sep 63; exchanged 4 Feb 64, has never returned to his company, whereabouts not known.*

Gifford changed his name after the end of the civil war to George W. Loch. He joined The Salem Invincibles which came from Franklin County, Tennessee and was wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines. We do not know why he changed our name. I have seen in your cemetery records of Keith Spgs. He was discharged June 61 and enlisted in Company I, 41st Infantry Regiment in Sep 61 and elected Major of that Regiment in Nov 61.
