The line I am asking about is my gg-grandfather Henry Frazier born 1813 and his wife Mary Margaret Pack born January 26, 1820. They married in 1838. They would be my g-g-grandparents. My g-grandmother was their daughter Paralee born 1860 married William Matthew Pack July 11, 1875. My paternal grandmother was Mattie Lee Pack born August 4, 1891. Paralee died 1895 in Wheelock, Robertson County, Tx. I am trying to locate birth records for Paralee and Mattie Lee Pack.

I hope this is enough information to help me. If not please let me know.

Thank you,

I'm looking for any information on my great grandfather Jeppie Malone. He was born in 1877 and died in 1912, but I have not been able to identify his parents names. He is buried in the Faulkner Cemetery (Pike Hill). I know I have relatives in Alexandria Tennessee, I met them at my grandmother's funeral in 1971. I have researched all the records I can on the internet, I doubt I will be able to find the records online, hoping someone has a copy of a family bible. Searching for information on the Thomas Jefferson and Malissa Exum Gill family. I am looking for data on Luther Peyton Gill. He might have been married three times. One was to my great, (times ?) aunt, Fannie Hardcastle in 1884, Smith Co, TN. She did not live long after they married.

The Gills lived in DeKalb Co, TN around Laurel Hill. The Hardcastles moved to the Laurel Hill area after Joseph Lykurgus Hardcastle's wife died and before they went to TX. There were a few that had already married that did stay in this area.

Forks Of The Pike Store or Hay(e)s Store
Date: 05/09/2015
Submitted by: Garry Hayes

My Grandfather was Mark Hannah Hayes. He owned the store at the corner of Hwy 70 (Lebanon Pike) and Hwy 96 [road to Murfreesboro]. The store stood, until they moved the entrance to Highway 96, west of the original Hwy 96 entrance. He would have had this store from the 1950”s until his death, Jan 6, 1964.

His wife, Monice, and he lived in a house directly beside the store. The store was even with street level. The entrance into the store faced Hwy 70. On the Hwy 96 side, was the entrance to the basement area. At times, it was used as a garage to repair cars. I believe Tommy Hayes was a mechanic there for several years. I believe Tommy would have been a cousin to my Mark Hayes.

Although the house was next door to the store, its front door entrance was not even with hwy 70. You had to go down a short hill to gain entrance. To an eight year old, that hill looked huge.

I am looking for a photo of the store and the house. Any help you could provide would be appreciative. The store was referred to by 2 names: Forks Of The Pike Store or Hays (sometimes Hayes) Store.

Thanks in advance.

George Washington Hale

Submitted by: John Hale

On page 53 of the 1860 census for DeKalb County, there is a George W. Hale living with the family of Hardy Johnson. I believe this may be my great great grandfather, George Washington Hale, who later moved to Copiah Co. Mississippi.

In the 1850 census (I can't remember which page and I can't find it online at the moment.), there is a Sarah Hale living in the same household. She is gone by the 1860 census leaving behind what I can only assume is her son.

If anyone can shed any light on this situation (i.e., what happened to Sarah, was she married and to whom, why they were living with the Johnson's) I would much appreciate it.

Tibbs Families of Tennessee
Date: 01/18/2015
Submitted by: David Tibbs

Hello

I have been doing research into the Tibbs families of Tennessee for some time now and continue to hit bumps in the road that are very frustrating. I have many Tibbs and know a lot are related, but can't figure out how. I have been able to follow most of the lines marriages etc., It's the Tibbs Themselves I can't connect. The counties I have been able to find them in are White, Smith, DeKalb, Putnam, Warren. Since these county borders changed so much during that time doesn’t necessarily mean some of them moved, but the boundaries changed placing them in another county from the previous census.
More information can also be found from a previous post to these forums by doing a search for Tibbs.

The census records 1820 and up indicate they migrated from Virginia. The 1820 Smith County Census, has Anderson, John, Thomas and William, relationships unknown. My direct line is through my 3rd Great Grand father Drury Tibbs b. abt 1810 in Tn., not Virginia according to later census and died sometime after 1880 in Warren Co. Ky. They relocated to Bowling Green, Ky sometime around 1860. Who his father was is unknown. Drury is possibly a hash-mark in one of the above families.

Recently it was found that Colonel William Henry Tibbs from Appomattox, Va. b. 1816 died in Dalton, Ga. 1906, lived in Smith Co. when his father William moved there in 1818. then to Bledsoe Co. in 1823, then to Mississippi only to return to Bradley Co. Tn. William Henry Tibbs later in life became a delegate for, East Tennessee, First Confederate Congress. According to what I have been able to find, his father William was a veteran in the War of 1812. William H.'s grandfather was John Tibbs and that's about all we know.

My main focus is not on William Henry Tibbs, but since he's a possible new lead, someone out there may have additional information on the other Tibbs and how they might all be connected.

I do have a website with much more information, keep in mind there is a lot of speculation and due to William Henry Tibbs records being found some more “Speculating” needs to be done. If anyone thinks they can help, please have a look. Tibbs Genealogy

Christopher C. Robinson, MD, was my great grandfather...

Lola Robinson was the daughter of Christopher Robinson and his second wife, Mary Driver. Christopher Columbus Robinson, the youngest child of Alexander and Rachel (Barnes) Robinson was born in Putnam County, TN, 11 October 1846. During the Civil War, at the age of 15, he enlisted in Company I, 4th TN Union Cavalry. His older brother, George, was killed in the Civil War. His brother John, who was in Illinois studying law, at the time, enlisted there in the Union Army. After the war, Christopher studied medicine, probably "reading medicine" with a prominent doctor in the area. Christopher C. Robinson married (2) Mary Driver, b. in 1852. They had one child, Lola Robinson. Lola Robinson married John Medlin/Medley and they had two sons, John and Odell Medlin. After Lola's premature death, John Medlin, who sometimes went by the name Medley, is difficult to find in the records.

Hope this is of some help. ~sl~

There were several Braswell Cemeteries. I looked for the burials of William and Amanda Braswell, and they are buried in the one that is also known as Dunham Cemetery. That one is located about 1/2 mile below Center Hill Dam on State Route 141. If you go to Center Hill Dam, highway 96 crosses the dam, and there will be a road turning off of highway 96 to the north off it from the west side of the dam, immediately at the dam. The directional sign there will say "Lancaster". You can see the Braswell Cemetery and the stones in rows behind a house and out buildings on a satellite view (switch to that view and zoom in) on Google maps at the TNGenWeb cemetery database here:

Two of Timothy Prichard and Amanda Braswell's children were buried in Nixon Cemetery on the lake side of the dam which cemetery is now under the water of the lake. Those two children were disinterred from the Nixon Cemetery in the 1940's before it was flooded by the lake and were reinterred in Mount Holly Cemetery. I have pages for those two Prichard children in the Mount Holly section of this website in "Cemetery Transcriptions".

I also have a map of the Mount Holly Cemetery that was donated for DeKalb TNGenWeb which shows the section numbers and the grave numbers. The cemetery has no markers still in existence showing the section numbers, but since the grave for Orba Prichard was only marked with a 4-inch-square brass plate on concrete, flat with the grass (and takes work to find if the grass overgrows them), the plate tells the lot (12) and grave number (18). Willie Prichard has a stone there. From the map which gives all these numbers also, I can locate the graves, and I know from memory that it is in the middle of the Nixon lot. I have just now uploaded that map to this web site, but until it is finished, it is only accessible through the link here below. For you I have highlighted lot 12 on it. The graves in that lot have numbers. The main road that passes by the cemetery would cross the bottom of the map, and the church would be to the left side of the map. The heavy black lines are the roads inside the cemetery. Link to cemetery map:

Hello,
I just found your page and loved that you're in DeKalb County, Tennessee. That's where my kin is from.

I wonder if any one can advise me or tell any story on Capt. John Pack? He married Maria Hayes in 1836. She was born in 1817. He served in the Civil War Confederate Army and was born in 1816 in Warren County, Tn and died Nov. 18, 1862, unknown location of his death? He was said to have died while serving in the Civil War, killed in action. Capt. John Pack- LL Dearman, 1st Company "I", 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The 35th trained at Camp Smartt, Warren County. He was the Son of Bartemus Pack, who was born in 1774 and married Mary Blin or Bain who died in 1856.

Both John and Maria (Warren Co) were disinterred to move to Mount Holly- unknown why relocated resting place. Maria is the daughter of Isaac Hayes, born in 1767 and died in 1836. Isaac Hayes married Margaret ? (1799 - 1860).

My 1X gr-grandfather is William Clarence Mahaffey, b. 1899 in Smithville, TN, and he married Maggie Lee Petty, b. 1894, also of Smithville, TN. Maggie was the daughter of Thomas Petty and Peachie Nunn.

John Forrest Mahaffey (my 2X grandfather) married Ida Belle Torbitt

GGG grandfather, Isaac H. Mahaffey, married Margaret Emeline Pack, daughter of Thomas Pack, b. 1886 in Smithville. I wanted to know what battles were fought in or around Smithville around Nov. 17th or 18th in 1862.

2ND- A murder a Isaac Mahaffey may have done went to trial, but I am unable to find more documentation. Any idea where I might look online? And also any idea how bad DeKalb County was hit during the Civil War? My understanding was it was hit hard and was the worst hit area. Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you

To answer a few of your questions, John and Maria Pack were originally buried in Martha Pack cemetery, and the location of that cemetery is now under the water of Center Hill Lake on the Caney Fork River. When the dam was built that created that lake in the 1940's, the Army Corps of Engineers, who were in charge of building the dam, had to hire people to dig up all the graves they could locate in the soon-to-be-flooded area, and the land for Mount Holly Cemetery was set aside by the government as a place to relocate those graves.

DeKalb County was not hit hard by fighting during the war. The only fighting was a small skirmish between Morgan's men of the Confederate army and Stokes men of the Union side near Liberty and Snow Hill in March of 1863. Other than that the county was hit hard by criminals who took advantage of the lack of government and the lawlessness of that period. With the criminals stealing and extorting and both armies taking whatever they wanted from the DeKalb Countians, there was poverty and fear for one's life in DeKalb County, but not from local battles.

November 17 and 18, 1862 were not days of battle anywhere in the Civil War. John Pack may not have died in battle, but many died of various diseases. At that time, most of Tennessee's armies were gathering in Tullahoma and at Stones River prior to the Battle of Stones River at Murfreesboro, TN.

But, as I go through the Young Bend cemetery listings, all of these same people are listed as being buried there. Does anyone know if Young Bend Cemetery was once called Mountain View?

Yes, it was. The cemetery is located close to the Mountain View Baptist Church on Four Seasons Road, which is just an extension of Bright Hill Road going east to Young's Bend of the Caney Fork River. On the death certificate, they were referring to that church. The cemetery is just east of and across the road to the north from the church. The cemetery is the first of three cemeteries along that Road, and is at the crossing of Bill Cobb Road and Young Green Road.

Bratton is the same man that designed the baptist church in Liberty. Buck Smitson was the last person to live there before we purchased it. The Tennessee law prohibits a birth certificate being released to the public before birth is 100 years past. Unless you have applied to the TN State Dept. of Health to get a copy of the birth certificate (for you they call it a "verification of facts"), you cannot know that there is no birth certificate. It will not be on the internet. If you have applied to get a copy, then you are right, and there will not be another document to tell you reliably. You can get the information you need to apply to get your mother's birth certificate at these links:

http://health.state.tn.us/Vr/Genealogy.htm

and

http://health.state.tn.us/Vr/PDFs/ph-3061.pdf

To order, you'll need the full birth date. If you have questions, you can call them at:

You are right White is one county and DeKalb is the adjoining county. There is no town named DeKalb, White Co., TN.

I see the following in the 1860 census:

** 1 living at Franks Ferry in White Co., TN. This can be found on Google maps. Franks Ferry Road in White County is where the ferry crossed the Caney Fork River between DeKalb Co., TN and White Co. This is far enough south that none of this area is or ever was in DeKalb Co. The household is seemingly kin to the other Drivers.

** 15 households in DeKalb Co., TN. Resided in the north area of DeKalb Co., TN. Alexandria was in the northwest corner of the county with several there (so then take notice of the Drivers in Cannon Co. and the ones in Wilson Co. because Alexandria is on the DeKalb/Wilson/Cannon Co. corner). Liberty has some and is just a few miles away from Alexandria (to the south). Liberty is on Smith Fork, a small creek/river that runs to the west. Also to the west is Temperance Hall, DeKalb Co., also right on Smith Fork. Smithville is about the middle of DeKalb Co. and some are there, but it attracts because it is the county seat. Watch for the ones in Smith Co., TN just to the north. All these are a pocket of kin. Seems they came from NC.

Deeds show that Burrell Driver from NC was on Smith Fork in 1802. Giles Driver was there in 1811. In 1819 Giles was at the big spring at Colvert's Lake. From "A Bicentennial History of DeKalb Co., TN" by Thomas Webb (in my possession): "Tradition says that the wolves were so numerous that in 1819 when Giles Driver moved to Fall Creek that he pinned his hogs in the chimney corner so the wolves would not kill them." In 1841 Giles Driver gave the land to build the Methodist Episcopal Church at Smithville.

DeKalb Co was formed at the very end of 1837; so the early records are in Smith County. You won't find the family in White Co., but mostly in Smith County early, and later in DeKalb after that area was divided out north of the Smith Fork. Before 1806, the Smith Fork River was near the boundary between the Indian lands and Smith Co. It was illegal to cross the line, and only a couple of people did. In 1806 a treaty opened that up, and Warren County was formed from the Indian area south of Smith Fork.

Hello, Thanking the webmaster for his help in the past.

I have found where the McDowells/McDoles came from before they were in TN.

The John and Andrew who arrived at the Land Office in Sparta in October 1810 were from Fairfield County, So. Carolina. Andrew was an immigrant with other members of his family in 1766-1767. He received headright land in S.C. making it possible to date his arrival. I do not know what ship he was on; so I don't know if he came from Scotland or Ireland.

Family: Father: Alexander. Will in Fairfield Co. dated 1793. Andrew, James and William came with their father. Father married again and had other children. My ancestor Andrew (about 1754-1825) was a surveyor 1773-1807 and served as a corporal in the Revolution. He is in the 1820 census in White County, TN.

His [Andrew's] son John (approx 1774-1819) had land on Falling Water River in White County. John's son Andrew was in the part of White county that became DeKalb Co. Andrew the younger lived about 1801-1850. Andrew used the name McDOLE, and so did his children who remained in Tennessee.

Sampson Bethel - Catherine Newby
Date: 07/30/2013
Submitted by: Terri Davis

I am looking for information on this Sampson (b 18 May 1788 NC; d 22 Feb 1880 Smithville, TN)

He served in the war of 1812, and his wife is listed as Catherine NEWBY. The records from the war office (Fold3.com) say they were married 1809 in Smith TN. (Most Ancestry.com trees identify Sampson Bethel's 1st wife as Sarah Holloway.- but she married a "Simpson" Bethel and moved to Ohio.)

I believe Sampson and Catherine Newby Bethel had 12 children. I believe that I know several of them, but am missing 2 older girls. But I have little proof on this family) I do see some 1836 land records mentioning 4 of his sons, with property adjacent to "James Newby". One unmarried daughter shows up on Census information, as well as his (presumed) daughter Catherine who married John Coleman Smithson), and Sampson was living with them in 1870.

Can you help me prove Mary Margaret Bethel (b 13 Jan 1819, Smithville) is their daughter? (She is my ancestor) I don't have any primary evidence, only speculation. I have Mary Margaret Bethel's obituary, with her birth date and birth place, but nothing on her parents. (Obit for Mary Bethel Seaton Hill; Found in the Saints Herald at the Temple archives).

Can you tell me anything about Catherine Newby? I believe she died about 1837, and Sampson remarried Frances Smithson, and had additional children.

There are lots of Newby's in Warren County and I am wondering if Catherine NEWBY (maybe she is "Mary" Catherine Newby???) is the daughter of Thompson NEWBY(1772-1836 died in Warren) and his wife - Mary Bethel(1778 - 1851 died in Warren)- but who were the parents of this Mary Bethel and how can I prove this?

Sampson and Catherine Newby Bethel named a son "Whaley" Bethel, probably after her grandfather, but I could use help understanding the Whaley lineage.

Regards,
Terri Davis

My great-grandfather was from Indian Creek, TN. He was born around Aug. 1864 (or maybe 1854). I would really like to find his parents, as I can't go any farther back in the tree. He married Permelia Crook. She was a widow of Yance Malone. They were farmers. My grandfather's death cert. lists his father as Babe Brent, so Babe may NOT be a nickname. OH, Babe died in 1929 in TN. Mary, I found a Nancy "Nan or Nannie" Melinda Hawkins in Cannon County married Oct. 26th 1884 to John Hayes Enos in Cannon County. Nancy was his 2nd wife, she was born June 5th 1865 and died Sept. 29th 1935. In the 1900 census these children were listed: Hattie Enos age 14, Oct. 1885-1950, Annie Enos age 11, June 1888-1972, Georgia Enos age 7, Nov. 1892?-1917, Jennie Enos age 6, Aug. 1893-4-1975, Hettie Enos age 2, Sept. 1897-9- 1941, also found an Etta Mae 1902-1990 and a Johnie N. Enos Aug. 4th 1891-2-Jan 3rd 1893. I came across this when I was looking up my great uncle Delter Youngbloods father Hayes Enos. The Youngblood and Enos family were neighbors on Parched Corn Rd., which is located in the Blues Hill community. I'm starting to do some searching on Nancy Hawkins, because my great aunt Zora Francis Jones Hawkins whose husband was Johnny Hawkins, I think Nancy is his aunt. Let me know if she is the one you're looking for.

HATHAWAY
Date: 01/19/2013
Submitted by: Jeanne Hathaway

I am seeking information about any Hathaways from/living in DeKalb County in the early-mid 1800's, specifically my great-great-great-grandfather James C. (Chrisopher) Hathaway b. abt. 1825 in DeKalb Co., m. Susan ?? b. abt. 1827 TN, probably DeKalb Co. His parents were John and Margaret "Peggy" Hathaway, both b. NC but residing in DeKalb Co. in 1840 (Fed Census); brothers were Simeon b. abt. 1830; Samuel b. abt. 1832, Jeremiah b. abt. 1833 & Henry D. b. abt. 1838, presumably in DeKalb, Co. or one of the other adjoining counties from which DeKalb was finally constructed in the late 1830's.

I have found Cimean (sic), James & Samuel on Eli Vick's 1845 store ledger, placing them in the Co. at that time as well. I'm assuming that with travel being as difficult as it was in those days that they didn't live too terribly far from Vick's store.

As near as I can piece this together from census records and Hathaway Family Association publications, sometime between 1846 and 1849 Peggy and her 5 boys moved to Marion Co. IL. (There is a daughter, DOB sometime btwn. 1826-1830, also listed on the 1840 Census, but she seems not to have made it to IL.) Also my great-great-great-great-grandfather John, b. btwn. 1791-1800 NC, appears not to have made the trip either. The reasons why for all of this are pure speculation on my part so directions to any sources that could confirm any of this "birth, marriage, death/burial records " would be greatly appreciated.

I have contacted the state archives and learned that there is no centralized system for these things until 1908. The county clerk tells me that Dekalb County records for wills don't begin until 1838 & marriages not until 1848. I've trolled everything possible on this site and only came up with the entries on Vick's Store Ledger, but that's a start. I can plan a trip there in the spring to look at any viable records that might not be online. Thanks!

I've tried unsuccessfully to contact Jim Cripps at J_crippa@man.com .

I have shared two contact emails with the other Jim Cripps jimcripps@yahoo.com but then suddenly there have been no replies from multiple attempts to contact Jim at jimcripps@yahoo.com for the last two months---I'm fearful that something has happened to Jim.

My questions:
Does anyone have any information regarding sources for the first, second, and third generations as listed here:

Does anyone have better contact information for either Jim Cripps?

I am trying to find the burial site for my Great- Grandmother Nancy Mariah Baugus Rowland. The best I have been able to determine thus far is that she was born on 20 December 1851 and died on 13 October 1876. She married George W. Rowland on 16 December 1875 and they gave birth to my grandfather Cornelius Jaco Rowland on 17 September 1876. I assume she died of complications from child birth. The records from Tennessee says that Cornelius was born in DeKalb County, TN. So I am guessing that she is buried in DeKalb County.

Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated! I have searched for almost 20 years to no avail.

Sincerely,

Kenneth G. Rowland

re: John S. Alcorn and Sarah (Sallie) Love

Submitted by: David Johnson

By the 1850 census it seems the marriage might have been about 1847. The marriage records in the area were slim to nothing then, and theirs is not found.

I find in the censuses that John and Sarah Alcorn and children are in Putnam Co. in 1860, Williamson Co. in 1870, Rutherford Co. in 1880. John is with son James K P Allcorn in Rutherford Co., TN in 1900 and widowed. Not found after that; so presumably John and Sarah died in Rutherford Co., TN. They had a son George W. who is found in the 1900 census of Rutherford Co., TN at age 38. Following George W. Alcorn for a death certificate finds him still in Rutherford Co. in 1910 and 1920, but missing in 1930. George's
Rutherford Co., TN death certificate #6173, March 29, 1927, states father was John Alcorn and mother was "Miss Love", proving her maiden name. He was buried "Jackson's Ridge". Maybe parents buried there also.

All the Loves in that area of DeKalb Co., TN where John Alcorn lived in 1850 with Sarah were descendants of William Franklin Love and Rachel McCool, who were both born and married in SC, moved to Sullivan Co., TN and then to Smith Co., TN. William and Rachel were in the 1820 Smith Co., TN census, residing on the east of the Caney Fork in the area that would later become the Laurel Hill area of DeKalb Co. (1860- District 16). William died Feb 18, 1821 in Smith Co., TN according to his Rev. War pension application and could not be the father of your Sarah, b. abt. 1824. She most likely is daughter of one of his sons, based on her location.

The 3 sons and at least one daughter who moved to the area lived either in Smith Co., TN near the DeKalb Co. TN border (Hezekiah Love- 1850), or in DeKalb Co., TN district 7 (Hezekiah's brother, John M. Love- 1850). District 8 is where John Alcorn and Sarah were in 1850 and is the south boundary of District 16. Both districts were on the east of the Caney Fork River. In the 1860 census district 16 of DeKalb Co. was formed from Smith Co., TN and Hezekiah Love is found there in a place named after his family- Love Valley. He lived at the intersection of Buffalo Valley Road and Love Valley Road- likely this is where William Franklin Love and Rachel McCool had lived.

Another brother of John and Hezekiah, named Robert Lee Love, died in district 8 in October 1859 according to the 1860 mortality schedule. His children are unknown. He could be of the right birth date (1799) to be father of your Sarah Love Alcorn. I do not know where he was in 1850.

Hezekiah's brother, John M. Love, born 1808, had a daughter named Sarah, b. 1848, and is not father of your Sarah. Hezekiah, b. 1811 is too young to be father of John Alcorn's wife, Sarah, b. abt. 1825. By the list of Hezekiah's children in 1850 and 1860, all listed there were born later than 1825, in the 1840's.

There is a copy of William Love's pension application, applied for by his wife, Rachel, resident of Smith Co., TN, for his service in SC. Hezekiah Love made an affidavit as their son in 1840, and Hezekiah was stated as resident of Smith Co., TN. There was mention in the 5 page application that a list of the names and ages of William and Rachel's children had been attached to the application, but Heritage Quest, where I found the application, did not see fit to copy that in their file copy.

The Love and McCool ancestry is proven at least one more generation back from William Love and Rachel McCool. No chance of a single Indian there; however, it remains that Robert Lee Love's wife, if any, is at present unknown. I cannot vouch for her race.

Recently the white house on Short Mountain Street in Smithville where my parents were living when I was born was torn down. I am trying to find out when that house was first built. It was the house occupied by Ella Foster, and her brothers James C. and Alva Foster. I think another brother, William Brown Foster, also lived there for a time. My mother and dad, Charles F. and Mildred Dearman, were living there with the Fosters when I was born. I would also like to know if the Fosters were the first to live in the house after it was built.

The house was last owned by the Danny Latimore family, and had been converted to accomodate apartments and a business. Thanks for any help you can give about this matter.

I have just started looking for my great grandfather William Thomas Vickers's family. My great grandfather lived in Bluff City, TN with his wife Mattie Cornelius Warren Vickers. My grandmother was Willie Mae Vickers who married Elcana Spivey and later George McGuire. My great grandfather didn't talk much about his family, but gave a picture of his mother and father(John Vickers and Lucy Tibbs) to my mother. The birth certificate that I have found does not list Lucy Tibbs as his mother, but Mary Jane Edge. I am still trying to figure this out. My mother said that she remembers a lady coming to Bluff City saying that she was William T Vickers's daughter. My research so far reveals William T marrying a Laura Bratcher in 1900, but I'm also having trouble finding more info on Miss Bratcher. I would love to know where this cemetery is as I have read of numerous Vickers buried in a Vickers cemetery.

Not related, just helping. This is complicated and confusing because one marriage record is in error it seems. You also need to recheck my facts and sources yourself. Your photo might not be of whom you think it is?

The Hamblen Co., TN delayed birth certificate of your grandmother, Willie Mae Vickers, b. 1907 in Hamblen Co., TN, shows that her father, William Thomas Vickers was born at Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN and was age 73 in 1953 and therefore born about 1880.

Since you did not have all this information, a generation in your query was skipped:

The father of Willie Mae Vickers, b. Sept. 7, 1880 in Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN, was named William Thomas Vickers Jr; therefore his father was also William Thomas Vickers, Sr. of DeKalb Co., TN. William Jr's delayed birth cert in Hamblen Co., TN gives this birth with parents William Thomas Sr and Mary Jane Edge, both born in Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN. I have seen the Bristol Co., VA marriage record of William [Jr] to Mattie Warren in 1906, and his parents stated there as JH and LA are wrong, and in that record for some reason his aunt and uncle were stated as his parents. This William was born 3 years before John Harden Vickers married Lucy Ann Tibbs. If William was son of John, there has to be an explanation as to why William is never in the census in John's house even as a small child and why William was born 3 years before John and Lucy married. Square peg in a round hole.

DeKalb Co., TN marriage records:
W. K? Vickers to M. J. Edge March 26, 1874. This was William Sr, your great-great-grandfather. It was not this person, but SEEMINGLY your grandfather, William Thomas Vickers Jr, who married Laura Bratcher in 1900. She seems was his first wife. Your confusion seems to be due to skipping a generation, confusing Sr with Jr and due to the strange marriage record to Mattie Warren. I know that William Sr and Mary J. Edge were still alive and were still married and residing in DeKalb Co., TN in both the 1900 and 1910 census; so William Sr did not remarry.

In the 1880 Dist4 DeKalb Co., TN census, William Sr. was b. abt. 1846 TN, age 34.

William 34 TN [William Thomas Sr]
Mary J. 26 wife TN
John W. son 5 TN
Columbus son 3 TN
Claude son 1 TN

The son Columbus Harden Vickers, born DeKalb Co., TN, has a Rutherford Co., TN death certificate naming William Vickers and Mary Jane Edge as parents. He seems to be named after Harden Vickers, whom I believe is the father of William Thomas Vickers, Sr.

Since William Jr. (future father of Willie Mae Vickers) was born in Sept. of this census year, he was born too late to be in this census. This is his parents' household though.

"Thomas Vickers" married Laura Bratcher Jan. 1 1900, and the 1900 census was taken in June. This seems to be your William Thomas Jr., who was not ever in his parents' house in the census. He was born after 1880 and left before 1900. In the 1900 census DeKalb Co., TN, a William T (19) and Laura L (18) Vickers are living with his "brother" "John J. Vickers" (age 28). The only problem is that I find William and Mattie Vickers in Prowers Co., CO in 1910, and he is listed there as married once, which is not necessarily correct. It maybe should say "m2".

**********
John Harding Vickers has a DeKalb Co., TN death cert in 1929 naming his father as Harding (AKA Harden) Vickers and Sallie Tibbs.

John and Lucy A. Vickers 1900 DeKalb Co., TN census: He b. abt. 1850, age 50, md 31yrs (1869). 13 children/ 11 living.

1870 Dist7 White Co., TN John (19) and Lucy A. (17) Vickers (next door to Harding (49) and Sarah (44) Vickers [Harding's wife Sarah was nee Sallie Ann Tibbs- from several death certs of their children]
Child of John and Lucy:
Josephine 11/12 [no William]

Lucy Ann Tibbs and Salie Ann Tibbs were probably kin somehow.

1880 Dist13 DeKalb Co., TN John and Lucy A. Vickers:
Ch: Josie 13, Mary C. 9, John 7, James W. 4, Elijah 1

1900 Dist5 DeKalb Co., TN John and Lucy Vickers:

DeKalb Co., TN death cert Josephine Bratcher-
parents: John and Lucy Ann Vickers
husb: Jacob Bratcher
b. 08/19/1872
d. 10/02/1946
She is Josie in the 1880 census.
**********
Your William Thomas Vickers Jr is not the son of John and Lucy. He is never in the census in their household, and was born 3 yrs. (1866) before Lucy and John married (1869). It seems his father, William Thomas Vickers Sr, is the brother of John H. and son of Harden/Harding Vickers and Sallie Tibbs.

In the 1870 census of White Co., TN, as I listed above for John Vickers, Harding Vickers is next door to John. John was 29 and Harding was 49.

Harding Vickers in 1850 DeKalb Co., TN:

Harden Vickar 26 TN
Sarah Vickar 24 TN [Sallie is nickname for Sarah]
William J Vickar 4 TN [so born 1846- matches your William Sr.]
Elizabeth Vickar 65 TN [maybe Harden's mother]

Harding Vickers in Dist16 1860 DeKalb Co., TN:

Harden Vickers 38 TN
Sarah A. Vickers 35 TN
William R 14 TN [You can see that William's middle initial is different in every census; so don't use that to identify him]
John H 9 TN
Eliza A. 7 TN
Elizabeth L. 10 TN
Tilmon B. 7 TN
Felix G. 4 TN

In 1870 William [Sr] is missing from Harding's White Co., TN household. He married Mary Jane Edge in DeKalb Co., TN on March 26, 1874.

Hello
I have been in touch with Jennifer (hi cousin). Yet to be connected.

My reply is for Martha. Is it possible to get a copy of that picture (John Vickers & Lucy Tibbs)? I am researching the Tibbs in Smith, DeKalb, White and Wilson counties and trying to make their connections.

My line is through Drury Tibbs who is probably a hashmark on the 1820 Smith County census and appears on the 1840 DeKalb.

Here is a link to my Tibbs website:

My great grandfather William Thomas Vickers was born Sept 7, 1880 and died June 19, 1970. I believe his mother was Lucil "Lucy" Hickey and his father John Harden Vickers(born Nov 12, 1850) not the John Vickers and Lucy Tibbs that he said. The picture which I have of William Thomas Vickers's parents is the very same picture as the one on the family tree of Lynn Schiller on ancestry.com. My great grandfather also mentioned that his mother was blind which is mentioned in the execution of her will after her husband died. I am still trying to find out more about the Vickers family as well as researching my husband's family. I would appreciate any help with my great grandfather William Thomas Vickers. I visited his farm in Bluff City, TN when I was a young child 2-4 times a week until I was married. He built many houses and buildings in the area and also had a nursery from which he sold treees. His wife Mattie C Warren had a floral shop which sold flowers to other flower shops as well as selling flowers to the local residents for weddings, funerals and to churches for Sunday services. I would love to hear from any one who might know of the early life of my great grandfather.

I am researching the Elisha Hardcastle of Warren Co, TN line and have run across George Lawrence Cantrell, Sr. of DeKalb County, TN, born 1872 and died 1943. He married Josie Ann Hardcastle 12 03 1893 in Warren Co, TN, but they lived in both counties. My question concerns their son, James Richard Cantrell. Whom did he marry? I know there is at least one more James Cantrell in the same time frame, so don't want to get them mixed up. Many thanks.

Benjamin Harrison Taylor (married to Elizabeth Smith) is my great grandfather. I have done some research on this family but would appreciate any help from you regarding the children of BHT. My grandmother was a daughter of his, her name was Sarah L. She was known as Lula. She married B. E. Raines in McKinney, Collin Co., Texas abt. 1909. My mother was their oldest daughter, born in 1912 in McKinney. I actually met Benjamin in the early 1950's - he was very old but in good health at that time. He lived to be 100 years old. I have some pictures of him and would be happy to share if you are interested. I would like to find out more information on his children. My grandmother was born in Indian Creek, Tenn. in 1887, the next child born was in Collin Co. in 1889, but I do not have the names or any other information. Any information from you would be greatly appreciated.

It seems you might not have a definite date for the marriage of James and Kitty. "James Ray" married "Catterina Boyd" March 9, 1854 in DeKalb Co., TN.

I noticed from the 1860 DeKalb Co. census that Kitty's middle name was Ann, and neither Kitty nor James were in DeKalb Co. at all in 1850, and James was never in the house of Thomas and Elizabeth in any census that named members of the household.

1850 census of District 4, Warren Co., TN, page 13 B:

157/157
Boyd, William 57 M GA
Boyd, Ann 50 F NC
Boyd, Fanetta 22 F TN
Boyd, Ephemia 20 F TN
Boyd, William 18 M TN
Boyd, Kitty A. 14 F TN [future wife of James Ray?]

Then 1860 census of District 6, DeKalb Co., TN, page 124:

629/618
Boyd, Ann 66 F VA
Boyd, Finnetta J. 32 F TN
Boyd,  Euphema 30 F TN
Boyd, Francis 10 M TN

This is the same family as in 1850 Warren Co. as above.

Two houses away in the same 1860 census, and same page is James Ray and Kitty.

Ray, James 35 M TN
Ray, Kitty Ann 24 F TN
Ray, William T. 5 F TN
Ray, Louisa 2 F TN

Elizabeth Ray, evidently widowed, age 76, is next to James and Kitty in 1860. She has the same two children living with her as in 1850 with her and husband Thomas "Rhea".
Ann Boyd is still next door in 1870, age 72, b. VA. Notice her age fluctuates a lot.

No marriage found for William T. Ray to Samantha Pack. Since they died in Lamar Co., TX (findagrave), could they have married in TX?

William Thomas Ray and Samantha Pack did die in Lamar County, TX. However, they must have married in TN as they are in DeKalb Co. in 1880 census with a son named, John. I know they had a son named Marshall Hollie Ray in June 1880 and he was born in Belk, DeKalb County.

Not related, just helping.

"Crit Hale" died in Putnam Co., TN, District 9, near Buffalo Valley on June 25, 1910 according to Putnam Co., TN death certificate #70267.

After the 1908 DeKalb Co., TN marriage, he and "Etter" (for Mary Etta) lived in District 9, Putnam Co., TN where they are listed twice in the 1910 census. Once the family is listed in household 31/33 as "Hall", but next door to his "Hale" parents:

Hall, Crit head M W 24 marriage2 2yrs[1908] TN TN TN
Hall, Etter wife F W 36 marriage1 2yrs 2/2children TN TN TN
Hall, Girthie daughter F W 7 S TN TN TN
Hall, James L. son M W 11/12 S TN TN TN

The census was taken in April and Crit died in June of consumption (TB). This shows plainly that Crit was married before, and that Girthie was not Mary Etta's daughter. It seems that whoever gave the death cert. info for Girtie never knew her father was married before Mary Etta. You are not kin to the Watts genealogy.

The family also appears
without Crit a second time in the same district, same county and same census in the household of Robert Watts (Mary Etta's brother). District 9, Putnam Co., TN, household 112/118:

Watts, Robert head M W 33 m1 10yrs TN TN TN salesman fruit trees
Almer wife F W 26 m1 10yrs 4/4 TN TN TN
Marlie son
Bethel son
Manie dau
Gace[sic] dau
Hale, Etter sister F W 38 m1 2yrs 2/2children TN TN TN
Hale, Girtha niece[to Robert] F W 7 S TN TN TN
Hale, James nephew M W 9/12 S TN TN TN

Once again Girtha 7 yrs old, and Etta married 2 yrs.

Crit's death certificate lists him as white, male, farmer, married. His 1908 marriage record in DeKalb Co., TN lists him as "C. C. Hale" and wife as "Etta Watts", Aug. 25, 1908. Since Crit died of TB, which could take months or a year or so to cause death, and since it was a very contagious killer at that time with no cure, his family may have moved out to save their lives. Death certs in TN before 1914 do not list the parents.

I have not found his first marriage record. I would assume logically that the first wife died in DeKalb Co., since Crit had custody of the child in 1910.

Where Crit is listed in the 1910 census, he is next door to one old enough to be his father, and is his father:

30/31
Hale, William head W M 49 m2 TN TN TN farm laborer
Hale, Bettie wife F W 36 m2 3/3children TN TN TN

1900 DeKalb Co., TN, District 22:

49/49
Hale, William head M W Apr 1859 41 married 15yrs TN TN TN farmer
Hale, Nancy wife F W Feb 1856 44 married 15yrs TN TN TN
Hale, Criton son  M W Feb 1896[sic] 14 S TN TN TN
Hale, Jessie T. son M W Jan 1888 12 S TN TN TN
Hale, Nettie[sp?] A. daughter F W May 1891 9 S TN TN TN

Where the birth year for Criton says 1896, that is clearly error, and the age in 1900 is 14 to prove that is the case, which matches his age of 24 in the 1910 census.

There is a marriage in DeKalb Co. of one William Hale to N. I. Trapp on April 9, 1885, in time for Crit's birth, and matching the 15yrs married in the 1900 census. "N. I. Trapp", age 24 in 1880, was d/o James T. and Anna Trapp, household 1/1, District 10, DeKalb Co., TN. Same District in 1870 shows her name as Nancy, age 14.

Marriage DeKalb Co., TN: James Terry Trapp to Anny Ferrell April 22, 1850.

No definite proof of parents here, but leads, and some of this I list here just to inform others also:

(1) James Roller, age 9, 1870 census DeKalb Co., Dist. 9, Liberty, page 202A, 216/216 in house of James Redman, age 55, and wife Ester, aka Hester, age 54. Shows James Roller born abt. 1861 in TN. Is he orphan here, and/or is he related to this couple?

(2) James Roller, age 19, and wife Mary Ann Evans living in 1880 census of DeKalb Co., TN, District 5 with children.

(3) James Roller and his wife are both buried in Keltonburg Methodist Church Cemetery along with at least the following children:

- James M. Roller 01/16/1860- 12/16/1934
- Mary Evans Roller 02/19/1859- 02/05/1942 [d/o James Evans and Martha Caldwell]
- Their son James Henry Roller (9/30/1876- 10/31/1944) who married Florence Adcock (05/06/1882- 11/04/1959) is also buried there, but he lived in McMinnville, Warren Co., TN, also from his death certificate.
- Son William T. Roller (12/13/1877- 01/05/1929 [death cert says died 01/04/1929]) also buried there and his wife S. S. (Sophia) Cantrell (11/22/1882- 12/07/1980) and family. William T. died in Cannon Co., TN, Daylight Community, death cert #176.
- Julius M. Roller (04/06/1890- 11/25/1958) wife Nora E. (Cantrell) Roller (07/10/1889- 01/11/1987) and family.

(4) Keltonburg is in the south part of DeKalb County and is not that far from McMinnville in Warren County. Mary Evans Roller was buried by High Funeral Home located in McMinnville, and so were sons James Henry Roller and William T. Since William T. died before his father, and since Mary Evans Roller and at least two of her sons were buried by High Funeral Home, I think you should check the High Funeral Home records and also seek an obituary for James M. Roller. High Funeral Home is still in business and has all its old records. They also wrote all their obituaries in most excellent detail back into the 1930's at least. The obituaries were published in both the Southern Standard of McMinnville in Warren Co. and in the Smithville Record for DeKalb Co. residents. The Southern Standard has the earliest obits. I have never seen a funeral home so consistently give the parents and nativity of the deceased.

You can contact John W. High Funeral Home:
http://www.highfuneralhome.com/

(5) The first Redmon (from NC) to settle in the area settled in Warren Co. in the Keltonburg general area with wife Catherine Cantrell, before DeKalb was formed from Warren Co. I mention this in connection with James M. Roller being in a Redmon/Redman house at age 9 in 1870. Note also that two of James M. Roller's sons married Cantrells. There are also many Redmons and Cantrells buried in the Keltonburg Cemetery.

(6) The only Roller in the area [always Warren County] by 1870 [also saw him there in 1850 -dist 14, h/h 777/777- and 1860] was Dempsey Roller, b. Dec. 25, 1821 in GA, died Dec. 21 or 31 [hard to read the stone], 1887 in Warren Co., TN, buried at Salem Cemetery in Warren Co., TN. Dempsey married first a Martha [prob. in 1840's], also born in GA, and they had children, but only one son, George W., to carry on the surname. George is in the 1850 census with his parents at age 7. In the 1860 McMinnville, Warren Co., TN census George, age 16, is an apprentice of a saddler named A. P. Greer. It is interesting that in the same household is an Irene Evans, age 38 b. 1822, within 2 years of the birth year of Mary Ann Evans' father, James (he in Liberty, DeKalb, TN 1860) b. abt. 1820. I never see George Roller again in the census. No marriage record found. Maybe he died and left James as orphan?? The Redmons were no strangers to Warren County, and it might be possible that George Roller may have had a child by a Redmon, in marriage or not. Dempsey Roller married a second time to Mary Kirby , but too late to produce a father for your James M. Roller. The surname is spelled in various censuses or their indexes as Roller, Roler, Rawler, Reller, and William T. Roller's death cert index entry seems to be Raller.

(7) There are two listings for a George Roller in two Civil War units, that consisted of men from Warren and DeKalb counties, among other counties. These units were 8th Reg, TN Cav. (Smith's), and 11th Btln, TN Cav. (Gordon's). Both were CSA units. A search of these records found at TSLA in Nashville on microfilm might show a death during the war in the 1860's, don't know. Sometimes when a soldier was killed there will be a letter or document in the file by a parent or wife requesting the deceased's personal belongings and any pay still due.

(8) The Warren Co., TN will and estate settlement of Dempsey Roller or of George Roller might give useful information, if it exists. James Redmon's will or estate settlement might mention James Roller.

From the same book: "There is one other landmark demanding notice, the pioneer cemetery on the northwest edge of Liberty. It is referred to by H. L. Hale as the old Methodist graveyard. It lies on a gentle slope facing the sunrise".

Another book, "Bicentennial History of Dekalb County Tennessee" by Thomas Webb, states the land for this church [the Methodist church formed second in what was not yet, but later, to be DeKalb County] was donated by Adam Dale as lot number 6 in Liberty, DeKalb County, TN on Aug 28, 1817. Source: Smith Co., TN Deed Book F, p. 198. Thomas Webb further states this lot is the present-day location of the Liberty Methodist Church, but is not the original building.

Going further, the phone book gives the location of this church as 403 Church Street. I do not know if the cemetery is on the very spot or somewhat separated. From the description it would be on a hillside facing east. Perhaps you could inquire at that church.

Delores,

John and Sinah was my Great Great Grand Parents. I descend from their son Anthony L. Foster. We do not know where they are buried. We think they were buried on one of the properties on Smith Fork that they owned. John died about 1832 when they were living on Smith Fork. Sinah did not die until 1871 and we beleive that she was taken back to Smith Fork for burial.

If you need more information contact me at my e-mail address listed.

I'm not related, but will do lookups.

From the DeKalb County, TN marriage records:

William H. Bozarth to Estella Vanilla Marcum on Nov. 30, 1928 in DeKalb Co., TN

Her parents from the 1920 census of District 13, Putnam Co., TN, page 121 B:

Wallace Ridge

111/112

Marcum, Sidney head M W 44 married TN TN TN farmer
Marcum, Sarrah E. wife F W 38 married TN TN TN
Marcum, Virgie D. daughter F W 7 S TN TN TN
Marcum, Essie V. daughter F W 6 S TN TN TN
Marcum, Willie E. son M W 1 10/12 TN TN TN

From the SSDI and the Texas death index: she was then named at her death Essie Vanell [similar to "Vanilla"] Mervin, born Feb. 27, 1913 and died Feb. 6, 1994, while residing in Lancaster, Dallas Co., TX.

1910 census of Dist. 13, Putnam Co., TN, page 127 A:

Marcum, Sid 34 first marriage, married 8 yrs, TN TN TN
Marcum, Sarah wife 28 first marriage, married 8 yrs, TN TN TN
_____________
From her father, Sidney Marcum's, Putnam Co., TN death certificate #7557, year 1936:

White, male, married, farmer

death: Silver Point, District 13, Putnam Co., TN [same area where he resided in the 1920 census- It is on the Putnam/DeKalb Co., line] Died March 27, 1939.

birth: Oct. 13, 1875 in TN [year is error- should be 1885- the 1920 census has him age 44, and he would be 50 at death in 1936. The death cert. does say he was age 50; so even that shows that 1875 is wrong].

father: Perry Marcum, b. Putnam Co., TN
mother: Marth Oaks, b. Putnam Co., TN

informant: Donald Sadler, Silver Point
Undertaker: none [this means the family probably buried him by themselves on the farm]

burial location and date: blank

Sidney Marcum married Sarah Gentry in Putnam Co., TN on Oct. 9, 1901.

For any more you'll have to email me. It is straying from DeKalb Co. records. I can give you more census and maybe death lookups, or, if you are a TN resident, you can get all that free here: http://tntel.tnsos.org/ then select "genealogy" link.

Randolph is my husband's 2 great grandfather. Randolph Lewis born circa 1815 Virginia/Tennessee/Missouri and living in Smith/DeKalb county according to Fed. census of 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880.

Need info on who his parents were, place of birth in VA/TN/MO, what drew him to Smith/DeKalb county, his date of death (assuming he died in Laurel Hill, last known place of record).

My info says his first wife was Lucretia Williams, d/o Giles Williams (though not documented). Her date of birth was 1825 and died 1855? Just know that Randolph married Nancy Fisher 1859.

Randolph and Lucretia had Monroe born 1850, who married Anna E. Starnes of the same Starnes family in the TN area. Her family had moved to Graves County KY. They married in 1876.

Thanking you in advance for any information and consideration

I am looking for the first wife of my gggrandfather, William Nelson Martin. They were married about 1836. Their first known son, John Marshall Martin, was born in 1837. 2nd son, Nepthali Brooks Martin was born in 1839 and Josiah Silas was born about 1842. There may also be a fourth son, William N. Martin b. 1843 who died in 1849 and is buried in the Poor House Cemetery. He has a headstone and the family seems to have a long time connection with the Redmon family, including 2 marriages. I know that WNM married Rebecca Parsley ca. 1842 or 3 after the first wife died. She died in 1851 and WNM then married Elizabeth Merrit (Mrs. Joseph H. Kitching) William's sister, Jemima Bethanne married Lorenzo Dow Linder in 1831.The only other clue I have is that in 1836,about the time WNM married first wife, WNM and James Cantrell were the chain carriers on a survey for Solomon Redmon. I know these families are connected. Hoping someone knows who the first wife may be.

Robinson. Their children were: Della born in 1883; Walter in 1886; Levi in 1889; Tucker in 1892; John (Johnnie) in 1893; Vena in 1894; Novella in 1897; and my grandmother Verna or Vernie born around 1903. Elizabeth (Ginney) died sometime around the turn of the century, as she is listed in the 1900 census, but not in the 1910, and my grandmother Verna is living with her brother Tucker. Family lore had her being killed in a wagon accident; however it was never discussed. One census has Elizabeth listed as Elizabeth B...which could have been confused with G. Not related. Just helping.

Emma Frazier married J. (Jim, James) R. Moore in DeKalb Co., TN Oct. 14, 1895. In the 1900 census of DeKalb Co., TN she is listed as born July 1876 in TN. She is buried in Walkers Chapel Cemetery, DeKalb Co., TN. Her parents were Harmon W. (1900 DeKalb census says "Hiram W.") Frazier and Elizabeth (nee McCullough), also buried there. Emma died in 1915 according to her stone, but I did not find her in the death certificate index. At least two of Emma's children are buried with her. The 1900 census of DeKalb Co. has Emma and her husband living with "Hiram W. Frazier", which is Harmon W. Frazier. Emma was listed as his daughter. Harmon's wife, Elizabeth, had died (1898). Harmon died in DeKalb Co. in 1900.

Emma's mother, Elizabeth, was born in 1838 and was first listed in the 1850 census of Coffee Co., TN as daughter of William (age 31) and Mary (maiden name unknown) McCullough (age 32), both born in TN. In 1850 Elizabeth was 12. Elizabeth McCullough first married Thomas N. Hill in Coffee Co., TN. I don't have the date. Their first, and possibly only, child was William Gasper Hill born about 1855 TN, as seen in the 1860 census of Coffee Co., TN. William is buried in Walkers Chapel, Cemetery. Thomas N. Hill fought in the Civil War in the 44th Reg. CSA, and is also buried in Walkers Chapel, died 1865; so he may have died in that war or soon after. Elizabeth married second Harmon W. Frazier, and no marriage record found by me for date nor location.

In the 1870 census, after the death of Thomas N. Hill, William [Gasper] Hill, age 14, son of of Thomas and Elizabeth, was living with Elizabeth's parents, once again being William and Mary "McColoth" in Coffee Co., TN. Elizabeth herself is not listed there in 1870. "Hiram" Frasier was not living with Elizabeth in 1870, but was also a resident of Coffee Co. at that time, living with his mother. In the 1880 DeKalb Co. census they are together with the same 4 children (Jane ,Thomas, Martha, Robert) whom he had living with him in 1870, seemingly from his previous marriage, with the addition of Leona, Emeline, and Levi- 3 children by Elizabeth. The first child of this marriage, Leona, was born about 1874.

The censuses 1870, 1880 and 1900 have the name as "Hiram" Frasier, but his tombstone has "Harmon", and he is listed as "Harmon" Frasier in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Beechgrove. In 1860 he is not married, living with Elijah and Sarah "Ashy" [prob. Ashly, Ashley] as a farmhand. Seems all people in my post here came from Beechgrove in Coffee Co.

From the 1850 census Harmon's parents were John (age 51 NC) and Sarah (age 47 VA) "Frazer", and this same Sarah seems to be the wife of Elijah "Ashy" in the 1860 census as her second marriage.

Sorry that we couldn't help with your question earlier, but now that you have found "Lee Lafever"- which is the way it's spelled on his death certificate (Levevor?), I have found his death certificate in the index of TN death certificates. His Cannon Co., TN death certificate is in Vol. 4, page 104, of year 1914 for that county. He died 9/26/1914. I see that you indicated uncertainty about his death date. I can obtain his death certificate for you when I go to TSLA (the only place you can get these) in Nashville in November when I go to do my own research. That should help settle some things for you. I found no death certificate for his wife- it's too early a date. Lee's cert might tell the cemetery, and maybe his wife will be found there.

I can also look for Chester's death certificate, assuming it was in 1933. If I have to spend too long looking for it, I'll have to stop. The state archives hours have shortened, and I live 100 miles away and make a single day round trip. If I find a full death date, and if things go quickly, I can look for an obit also at TSLA for Chester in the Southern Standard of Warren Co., TN. Early 1930's issues of that paper are partially missing.

It does not seem that this book was ever published. The Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville does not have the book and should have it if it was published. The only books by that author there are two census books for Putnam County, TN, possibly his main county of interest.

"Record Group 50" of the state records, which contains, among other entries, the entries of the first surveyor's district, are on microfilm also there at TSLA. The staff there might search it for you.

There is only an index published for this in book form for Jackson Co. ("Building Neighborhoods"), Davidson Co., and the 2nd surveyors' district.

Could someone please do a lookup in the above book, page 283, settlement for James Cantrell. There is a descrepancy for James Cantrell's death date. The DeKalb County listing shows that on 7 Mar 1859 "It appearing to the County Court that James Cantrell had died leaving no will, Benjamin Cantrell is appointed administrator."

The problem arises in that "James" Watson Cantrell and his wife Elizabeth appear in the 1860 census at household 515 family 507. This census was taken 30 June 1860.

CANTRELL, Watson, age 69, born South Carolina

My mother, who was born and raised in DeKalb County, said the power lines and poles were installed there in 1932. This might not help you date the house at all. For example, my mother said her grandfather's house was connected to electricity at that time, but that the house where my mother and her parents lived never had electrical power until after they moved in the 1940's. A house built after 1932 might or might not have wiring installed then.

Thomas Webb might be able to help both of you with more answers. See him at the Justin Potter Library in Smithville.

Vickers Cemetery Location

My wife and I have made several trips to TN. to locate this cemetery.

We have come across several different directions for the location, one saying Keith and Vickers are the same.

From the Find A Grave images of Keith and Vickers Cemeteries it appears they are not the same but are separate.

They might be in the same area on private property.

We have visited Keith, and did not locate any Tibbs though there are relations.

Does anyone know exactly where Vickers Cemetery is or have contact information for its location?

Here are the names of the ancestors we are in search of who are listed as being buried there:

Thank you for the posting and map. It sounds like it might be around Vickers Hill or possibly Vickers Hollow road. Vickers Hill road does not even exist anymore and Vickers Hollow ends at a big gated private drive. Whats funny is Keith Cemetery Rd exists and is marked with a road sign, yet my GPS does not even show a road as being there, but it shows Vickers Hill that looks like it has been gone for quite a while. Can't always trust GPS units.

I'll keep an eye out here for replies that might narrow it down even closer.

The Keith Cemetery and the Vickers Cemetery are different cemeteries about a mile apart. That information is on this DeKalb County site. On the main page find the link to "Cemetery Directions". Keith Cemetery is 2 miles north of New Home Baptist Church up New Home Road (Hwy 83), 1/4 mile west of the road.

Vickers Cemetery is also up New Home Road, but only about 1 mile north of the church, and is about a half mile west of the road in the edge of the woods, as I am told. You'll have to do some close looking and some walking to get there.

Since New Home Baptist Church is the reference point, the church is near the intersection of Highways 146 (Short Mountain Road) and 83 (New Home Road).

Are you related to James Gunter Jr. son of James Gunter Sr. who married Margaret "Peggy" Gunter about 1832-1835?

My g-g-g-grandmother was Margaret Gunter. I cannot find her marriage anywhere. She married a man last name of Hill. She was widowed. She is only listed in one census record with her name (maybe a nickname). Missouri, Clay County, Fishing River. In 1832 she married Henry Jr. She married in the home of James Gunter Sr. I was wondering if this Margaret fits into your Gunter family?

I am researching the Goodman family tree and found some information on Solomon Goodman (see Dekalb Federal Census for 1860 below). I also found reference to a Solomon Goodman in District 9, DeKalb, TN for the United States Census, 1880. (see names below) It said Solomon's mother was born in North Carolina and father born in Georgia. Elizabeth's mother was born in North Carolina and father born in Tennessee.

My Goodman Family--John and Hannah (Cooksy) Goodman, lived in Madison, Co., Alabama for the 1850 Madison Co Census. I noticed some of Goodman's seemed to appear in DeKalb Co about the same time, making me wonder if they are related.

I am new at this Family Tree Hunting, but I hope what I've found is helpful.

My grandfather was Claude Magness. His father was Calvin Harris Magness who married Sally Black. I know that there is LOTS of information on this family. I never knew my grandfather as he had passed before I was born. My mother, Ada Virginia Magness Mitchell, stated that he never talked about his family or where he came from. I know that he had siblings, but don't know much more than that. He had a brother or half brother that came to see him once, Noble. Noble was a police office from Chicago. I have been to Salt Lake City hoping to find the book Magness Migration by Verna (?), but someone had stolen it from the library. I knew some of the Magness' were horse thieves and evidently some of the offspring had carried on the tradition. Some time back I read information from another lady in Kentucky that named my grandfather in it, but haven't been able to locate it again. My mother was born in Hickman Co., KY as was my father. I know a little about my parents lives there, but not how my grandparents got there, it's as if they all just swam out of the Mississippi and that's that. I would appreciate any information so that I can connect family members. Information on how to obtain the Magness Migration book or any other books on this family.

I am descended from the DeKalb Co., TN Magness family. Mine are all descended from Perry Green Magness, Sr.

I traced your genealogy 2 more generations back past Calvin Harris Magness, finally to a Zachariah C. Magness (Calvin's grandfather) living in Williamson Co., TN in the 1830 census. I have no records showing the DeKalb Co., TN Magness family in Williamson County, but below in the link to Thomas Webb's family report there is a link to some of the family in bordering Rutherford County, TN and a court trial in Williamson County, TN.

Your family did not crawl out of the Mississippi River unless they fell out of the boat. They did cross the Mississippi River twice. Zachariah and his children went from Williamson Co., TN to Calloway Co., KY, then to Greene Co., AR, then his widow and one widowed daughter returned to Calloway Co., KY. In the later years your grandfather ended up in Fulton Co., KY at Hickman. Neither your grandfather nor his father, Calvin Harris, seem to have been born in Hickman. They did not even live there until later. Your second great grandfather, Edward M., son of Zachariah never went to AR, it seems, but stayed in Calloway Co., KY.

Thomas Webb did a lot of detailed research into the Magness family. There was a Zachariah Magness in the early family in NC. Your Zachariah was born a generation later, but at least one by that name is recorded in the family. Thomas Webb's work can be read at this link:

http://www.e-projects.dk/joomla/genealogy/pafn06.htm

In that report, Thomas Webb mentions he read "Magness Migrations" and used the information in his genealogy report. Contact him about that. You can only mail him at the Justin Potter Library by US mail. The address is on the DeKalb Co. TNGenWeb main page.

Here is a link to what I found searching the censuses. The report is too long to place on this page:

John Fisher seems to have been buried in Fisher Cemetery in DeKalb Co., TN, or at least the DAR is convinced of that. I do not know what proof they had to know his burial location. They placed a DAR grave marker for him in Fisher Cemetery with the same birth and death dates as you gave in your query. The cemetery is located on the road through Temperance Hall as you go toward Hickman and at the Smith/DeKalb county line. Yes, this area was once Smith County, and since DeKalb County was not formed until December 1837, after John died in April of that same year, he was buried in what was then Smith County.

The grave is recorded on the internet here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2248467&GRid=24406962&

The Caney Fork Baptist Church Cemetery is far away to the south in Warren County, and is not at all the right cemetery.

Since John Fisher served in the Revolutionary War and was buried in DeKalb County, I might place his biography on this web site with the other DeKalb Countians who served in the Revolutionary War. I can do some of that research myself, or if you have something to contribute to that, it would be appreciated. The DAR would have some records for a fee.

All DeKalb Co., TN newspaper copies still in existence (Alexandria Times and Liberty Herald) are abstracted here on the DeKalb Co., TNGenWeb site, and they can be accessed through the links in the newspaper section on the main page. The search on the main page also searches them. There are no other newspapers to do lookups in prior to 1900. These are abstracts, but the information is complete. I can do lookups after 1900 when I travel to the area, or the Justin Potter Library in Smithville can be contacted to do lookups, but they must be contacted by US postal service mail, and you may call for instructions. Please include SASE and cost of copies (15 cents? per sheet). You will find their address and phone also on the main page of this web site. They have microfilms of all existing issues.

These Winfree brothers, AKA Winfrey or Winfry, are all listed in the Smith Co., TN censuses in at least the years 1850 through 1870. In 1850 in Smith Co. there seems to be at least two large families of Winfry children living with one female head of household, Mary, on two consecutive pages- very large household. You will probably find their parents in the wills and estate settlements of Smith Co., TN, since at least their father seemed to be dead by 1850 while they lived there. I don't think this Mary was their mother. There were a few Winfrees in the DeKalb Co., TN censuses in the Temperance Hall area, but not these brothers in these years. The brothers were in District 15 of Smith County which is the area bordering DeKalb Co.

These Smith Co. censuses are all transcribed on the Smith Co., TNGenWeb site, and there are full indexes there. To certainly get oriented right, look for the one named Bennet. As for wills and estate settlements and probate court cases, they are plentiful and well indexed on microfilm for Smith Co. at the state archives (TSLA), but are not on the Smith Co. site. There is a link to the Smith Co. site at the bottom of the DeKalb main page.

Where is CANE CREEK?

Submitted by: Sharon Hofer

Andrew McDOLE or McDOWELL is listed in the DeKalb County 1839 Tax List as being in DISTRICT 8. Later, his sons John and James show up.

In 1822 and 1823 Andrew is on a list of taxables on CANE CREEK in White Co., since DeKalb County wasn't formed yet. Where is Cane Creek? I think it may be off Caney Fork near Fallingwater River because Andrew's father lived on Fallingwater in 1814.
Thanks.

There is a Cane Creek that runs from today's Putnam County (White County in the early 1800s before Putnam County was formed) southwest into the north bank of Falling Water River east of the Caney Fork and downstream (west) of Burgess Falls. Burgess Falls is on Falling Water River. Falling Water River now is the White/ Putnam County, TN line.

Just to give complete information, there is another Cane Creek that comes off Spencer Mountain running north just east of highway 111, a highway that goes from Spencer in Van Buren Co to Sparta in White Co. This second Cane Creek empties into the south bank of Caney Fork at the Van Buren/ White County line. This is several miles from DeKalb County. A person living on this Creek could have been in Van Buren County, or possibly White County only at the point of the connection.

The Tennessee Dept. of Transportation (TDOT) maps are the best for naming everything in detail. The cemeteries are even marked, but not named. There is a map for every TN county. Here is a link to their county map selection page. Select the one for Putnam County and you will see Cane Creek connecting to Falling Water River. There is of course also a DeKalb County map available.

The link: TDOT maps

I have come back to this post again because I hope to travel to Dekalb Co/Putnam Co. in 2014. Thank you, David, for your help. I have been able to look at the DOT map and others to locate Cane Creek.

Here is a little more info about the location of Andrew MCDOLE'S land on Cane Creek. It was not Andrew's alone, it was purchased with WESLEY GREEN.
DEED: White County Roll Number 128, book C, page 217. type record: Mountain land grant.

a certain tract of land or parcel of land containing one hundred and fifty acres by survey having the date the 26th day of Aug. 1825 lying in said county on the waters of the Falling Water on Cane Creek and bounded as follows:Beginning on a white oak on BENNETT KEMP's south boundary line on the north side of the creek thence west 218 poles to a chestnut south west corner of another fifty acre survey of said KEMP then south 110 poles and one sixth to a stake thence east 218 poles then north 110 and one sixth poles to the Beginning.

I cannot find any reference to which side of the Cane Creek the land is on. Wesley Green was a neighbor or relative.

About 1814 Andrew's father, John McDowell, (about 1775-1819) hauled into court a "Worley Green" who had charges to face. It is written in the Court Minutes. I never found any other reference to Worley Green, so I don't know if that is a transcription error.

There is a History Day held in October at the State Park near Cane Creek and Falling Water and Caney Ford. I hope to be there for the History Day next year so I can nose around where Andrew lived and visit any old, crumbling cemeteries. I want to pay my respects. I have noticed that relatives sometimes referred to Silver Point as home. Others were at the Fancher's Mills. So I will be sure to go there.

I think her mother's name was also Lucinda, but am not sure. I can't find them together on the 1860 census not the 1870 one. I am really stuck. Can you help?

I did a look-up for the marriage record in Putnam County where Robert G. Nelson was living with his parents in the 1880 census, and I looked in DeKalb County where the couple was living in the 1900 census, and I found no marriage record using any variation of either of their names. I also looked in the surrounding counties.

I have a feeling they married in Putnam County. For some reason There are a lot of Putnam County marriages in the 1880-1900 time period that are missing. I was at TSLA yesterday and had the opportunity to use Ancestry.com.

I have a record that shows AMERICA JANE RIGSBY AND SAMUEL JONES MARRIED 17 March, 1866 Dekalb, TN.

I am searching for America, my G. grandmother. She told her adult children that she had married a Mr. Jones and that he was killed two weeks later before she married Mr. Bray.

I next find her married to Elijah Green Bray and living in Freestone County, TX. in 1870 census. I know that there were Rigsbys and Brays in Ala living in Henry and Baldwin Counties. I have not been able to locate anything about America--where she was born, parents. etc.

America's death record in OK. 1926 shows maiden name as Rigby--could not help but hope that was not the spelling and maybe the marriage record in TN was a valid clue. Blessings to anyone who has help.

Alexandria TN Story (hopefully)

Submitted by: Joey King

My great-great Grandfather, Edmund Stamps Sr, was from the Calfkiller Valley about 5 miles south of Monterey TN. He was drafted into the Confederate Army and arrived at the Battle of Murfreesboro the day before it started and deserted a few days later. His last son was born in Feb 1865 so I know that he and his wife were together around May 1864.

Apparently, he caught pneomonia in "Eleander" TN and died on March 2, 1865. His oldest son Eligiah was at his side and was killed by unknown bushwackers the next day trying to bring the body back home to Putnam County.

Most of these details have come to me via a letter that Eligah wrote with very poor spelling. I have searched every imaginable angle and the only thing I can come up with is that Edmund died at Alexandria.

I believe that part of Confederate Gen John Hunt Morgans' raiders left from Alexandria, and I think that the Federals took it over soon thereafter. I further believe that "internally displaced persons" from middle TN sought refuge at this Union outpost and that is where Edmund Stamps Sr possibly died.

Any information on this Federal outpost in Alexandria and it's operation in Feb/March 1865 is appreciated.

There was a "John W. Gracy", b. abt. 1827, (maybe son of Hugh?) living in the Sligo District of DeKalb Co., TN in the 1850 and 1860 census. The Sligo area of DeKalb Co., TN is adjoining White County, and was a part of White Co., TN before DeKalb Co., TN was formed in 1837.

Hugh Gracey lived in the Sparta area of White Co., TN. This query should be placed in the White County, TNGenWeb queries, because that county is older than DeKalb Co., and all the records of William and Hugh Gracey will be there.

I do not find any Gracey's or Gracy's in the 1840 census of DeKalb Co., TN, and Hugh is in White Co., TN in 1830, 1840 and 1850. Also Susannah appears to already be the widow of William Gracy by the time of the 1830 White Co., TN census (at which time she is head of household), possibly indicating that William died before DeKalb Co. was formed

All as found in one family unit in Livingston County, KY in 1850 census living with Augustus Davis and his (apparently) wife Mary and 18-year-old Elizabeth Davis.

All members of the family are shown with birthplace in TN.

I'm GUESSING that Mrs. Mary Stephens (WIDOW???? with six children) married Augustus Davis (widower??? with 1 daughter) sometime in late 1849 (after he sold property near Caney Fork River in White County (no wife's name/signature on sale).

I'm looking for any leads on a possible family group with Mary as mother and the named children in ANY county near White County, TN (who would have LEFT the county/state) before early summer of 1850.

Where exactly was the Caplinger Mill on the Smith Fork River? Was it where the huge stone pillars are, just 200 yards up stream from the modern bridge on Temperance Hall Road (aka HWY 264)? If that is not it, where exactly was the mill and the old home?

The following came from "A Bicentennial History of DeKalb County, Tennessee" by Thomas Gray Webb, 1995:

Page 312:

"The big mill at Temperance Hall was built by Samuel Caplinger, who was probably the greatest builder ever to live in DeKalb County. He bought the land at Temperance Hall in 1821 and built on it the grist mill soon thereafter." "... in 1842 he sold his house and farm and the mill at Temperance Hall to Nicholas Smith..."

Page 396:

"Temperance Hall developed northwest of the large house which Nicholas Smith bought in 1842 from its builder, Samuel Caplinger. The house was built about 1821 and was on the National Register of Historic Places until it was torn down in 1988."

The buildings were destroyed. I do not know its exact former location, only the clues given above.

Hames Family
Date: 05/17/2010
Submitted by: Dan Culp

I'm looking for any and all information on the Hames family of DeKalb County. Here's what I know: My great great great grandpa Richard Hames was born in DeKalb County in about 1843. He fought in the 35th (aka 5th) Tennessee infantry in the Civil War and was discharged shortly after the Battle of Perryville due to a knee wound he sustained several months earlier at Shiloh. On May 31, 1867, he married Celia Caroline McGowan of White County in Wilson County, with the Rev. Samuel T. Alsup (missionary baptist) presiding. He may also have married a Louisa Jane Bachus in 1865 in front of a J.P. By 1870, he had relocated with Celia to Kentucky.

Unfortunately, there is no Richard Hames or any variation thereof listed in the census for 1850 or 1860. I have theorized that Richard may be the same person as Alexander Hames, son of John William Hames, who was born about the same time. Both Richard and Alexander were also sons of a Virginia-born father and a Tennessee-born mother. John William lived on Holmes Creek in DeKalb county on a rented farm. John William appears to be the son of Joshua Hames, who also lived in DeKalb county and who was likely born in Amelia County, Virginia in about 1779. John William died sometime after the 1880 census, at which point he was apparently a hired hand on a farm in Wilson County.

I am interested to know the maiden name of Alexander's mother, Sarah. She was born c. 1819 in Tennessee and died between about 1854 and 1856, when John William remarried to Nancy Pack. I expect that Sarah was probably a member of one of the other families that lived along Holmes Creek, which included Cantrell, Fuson, Taylor, Pack, Hayes, and various other surnames. They were almost certainly married in one of the counties in the vicinity of DeKalb, probably in about 1837, as their first son, Joshua, was born in about 1838. I can't seem to find a record of their marriage on Ancestry.com's Tennessee marriage collection, though.

I have only found one branch of the family so far that remained in DeKalb County- that of John William's son William, whose youngest two (twin) sons Charlie and Hershal both lived in DeKalb County apparently all their lives (1897-1973/79). That branch of the family, as well as mine which moved to Kentucky and then Arkansas, ended up spelling the name Haynes. I know Charlie had at least two daughters named Freda and Frances. Not sure if or whom they married. Hershal had daughters named Willa and Louise, but I also don't much more about them. Hershal's girls were born in the early 20s and Charlie's in the late 20s.

Any help increasing my knowledge of any of these people or their ancestors or descendants would be much, much appreciated!

Rowland born in Liberty abt 1855 and Eliza Ray born abt 1857. I have found mention of the boys and Wiley Fite, who also lived with the Rowlands in the Libery Herald and in the 1880 census. I have been unable to find any trace of the deaths. My grandfather and Shelah went on a train to Texas where my grandfather settled. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Melvia

I'm working on my family tree. My dead end is at my ggggrandfather, John Wesley Allen married to Sarah Martha Kettle. They moved from Alexandria, Dekalb Co., Tenn to Butler Co., Ky in 1860. I cannot find an exact relation to JW in Dekalb. I have lots of possibilities. His children were Susan, Andrew, Yancy, Rachel, Gilbert, Josephine, Mary, Amanda, John Wesley, and my gggrandfather David Richard Allen or D P Allen. If anyone out there has any information would greatly appreciate it. Also there is a Sion Bass Allen, son of Andrew, bible page that has a few people on it that I would like info on.

MESSAGE I am researching Archer Allen b. 1813 in NC. On the 1850 Smith County census he is living nextdoor to a Gilbert Allen (married to Julia) and living near Gilbert and Julia on the 1860 DeKalb County census. Archer married Elizabeth Jones in 1838. I have a hunch that Archer is connected to the John Wesley line somehow but have never been able to prove it. Do you have a connection to Archer in your records?

I looked thru all the Dekalb Co. Cemetery Book, and cannot find John or Katherine listed in Dekalb Co. I would try Wilson Co. research or inquires.

In the DeKalb County Administrator Settlements book for 1854-1865 (page 4) is the following

"pg 283. 7 Mar 1859. It appearing to the Copunty Court that James Cantrell had died leaving no will, Benjamin Cantrell is appointed administrator".

James Cantrell is also listed in the 1860 census for DeKalb County Tennessee district 5 Household 515 with wife Elizabeth and children Sarah, George P, and Martin.

One of the above is incorrect; he should not be on the 1860 census if he died in 1859. Has anyone discovered this descrepancy before and found out what is correct information?

Is there a death certificate for James Cantrell?

Hello
George Kelley (b. 1786)and his wife Nancy were in DeKalb Co.,TN, till ca. 1850-1860. All of their children are probably not identified.

Their daughter Mary Polly Kelly born abt 1827-1828, who married Calvin Jones, might be a sister to Milly. Mary's younger sister, Susan, married Preston Jones the brother of Calvin. The oldest child in the family is Sebastian Cabot Kelley who spent much of his life in Shannon Co.,MO.

I am trying to find more on Calvin and Preston Jones. They might have fought in the Civil War in KY, since they had children born there, during that era.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Tibbs in Dekalb, Smith, White and Wilson Counties

Submitted by: D. Tibbs

Looking for any information on Tibbs. In 1836 150 acres was deeded to Drury Tibbs on the ridge between where John R. Jones lives & Heaths Branch. The geographic description says in White County. There is listed a Tibbs Hollow on the present day topographical maps bordering Dekalb in White County. Does anyone know when and who this was named for, Drury?

In 1840 Drury and John Tibbs are listed as heads of households in district 8 Dekalb County Census.

1850 Smith Tn. Census, South Division. Household 385 William Tibbs 30 M, Susan 31 F, Martha 12 F, Pleasant 10 M, Jane 7 F, William 4 M, Elizabeth 2 F.

Household 386 Drury Tibbs 29 M, Nancy 30 F, Manerva 13 F, John 17 M, Amziah 5 M, Emaline 4 F, Susan 0 F. Does anyone know the connection between William and Drury?

1860 Wilson, census in Cherry Valley, Tn. shows the William Tibbs household from above plus four more kids.

1860 Smith Census in Dist 18, Jennings Fork lists Lewis W. Tibbs 48 as tenant, Drury is missing but Nancy, Amziah, Sarah, Susan, Amanda 7 F, Martha 4 F, and Harrison L 1 M. Does anyone have information on who Lewis Tibbs is and what could have become of Drury? An 1861 Smith County Deeds record shows Drury Tibbs selling a crop of tobacco to Russel Mercer.

In the same 1860 census John Tibbs 27 M, Lucenda 22 F and Nancy E 4 months F. It appears he is the John listed in the 1850 census above with Drury.

The line we are following is Drury and need to make the connections that might allow us to find his parents and siblings. Later it appears some family members moved to Warren County Kentucky which takes us to the present

This is just an update as of 5/20/2014 to my original post.I am still researching the Tibbs family in this area and how thy are related.

In the 1860 Smith county census which Drury Tibbs was living at the time, I came across an Elijah Tibbs listed in a different household. Doing some looking into him, he was in Barren county Ky. in the 1850 Census. For some time now we had wondered if it was just a coincidence or what that he moved to Smith county.

Yesterday I found two new records for Elijah or Elizah. In 1838 he is listed on a White County Tax List and an 1839 tax list for DeKalb. This places Elijah and Drury living in the same counties in the earlier records, so I would say there probably is a connection between them, perhaps brothers? They are very close in age. Drury as near as we can narrow it down to was born about 1810 and Elijah the same. So a few years difference is not out of the question.

Please see my original post for more details on the Tibbs.

Hi, Me again. I just did some figures & have concluded that John was a younger bro of Dru & William, & Manerva was his wife, not Dru's daughter. Her other name must have been Lucinda. Don't know how they missed all the other census' through the years. There is 1 record of Lucinda buying land, I think in DeKalb, during the Civil War. Think maybe John was away in the war. He had definitely died bef. 1880, when Manerva & children, along w/Dru's wife, were in Warren Co., KY. John & Lucinda (Manerva)'s daughter, Nancy, was my g.grandmother. Somewhere there are some records that might indicate who the father of Dru & William was. I'm thinking it might have been Anderson- remember someone on 1 of the older census' who was older & no wife. Maybe that was why John & Manerva were living w/Dru. Good luck. If you find anything new, let me know. There is a "cousins" group in Bowling Green, & some of them might have more info than I do. Send me your e-mail address & I'll send you a contact for them. Danna

Judge Robinson, B. W. Robinson and Elijah Robinson have bought the celebrated sulphur springs near Smithville, and will immediately begin the erection of a large hotel. This is a fine property. The red, black and white sulphur waters said to be the best, and no doubt this will become one of the most noted watering places in Tennessee. They may have bought the property from Judge Cantrell. If you are referring to Seven Springs Hotel near Smithville, TN, I have been researching my great grandfather and have run across references to this Hotel. His name was J T Odum and married Minnie Cantrell, daughter of Judge Robert Cantrell on 31 May 1888. They lived in Lebanon, TN. I have recently acquired their family bible and it has an old postcard of Seven Springs Hotel, Co., Smithville, Tenn in the front.

The story of Odum's going to Seven Springs has been passed through our family for years. Goodspeed's History for DeKalb County states the following, "Six miles from Smithville is a popular summer resort called Seven Springs, J. T. Odum, proprietor."

I have not pursued this research question any further at this point but have it on my list. The post card does not show the hotel but instead pictures the spring at the bottom of the hill. If you are interested, I can scan and email you the postcard.

I suspect that Nellie Caroline Cantrell may be in my ancestor line but I have not looked into this.

Parents of John Floyd Medlin (Medley) 1894-1961

My paternal grandfather was John Floyd Medlin, b. 9 March 1894 in DeKalb County. The first record I can locate for him is the 1910 Census, when he was living in the Martha J. Corley household. He is listed as "Johny F. Medlin", cousin. My uncle has told me that Corley family owned a neighboring farm.

Throughout his life he used the names "Medley" and "Medlin"; I knew my own father as John Jr. Medley, born 1920. His mother was Lola Bell Robinson, who married my grandfather John Floyd Medlin in 1912. They had an older son, Herbert Odell Medlin/Medley.

I have reason to believe that the the Medlin family was resident in DeKalb County for several generations prior to my grandfather's birth, but I can find no record of his parents. Unforunately, I do not know their names. Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

I am interested in your comment that this family used both the names of Medlin and Medley. I am working on the line of Lola Robinson, who married John Medlin. In later years, he and the children are using the name Medley. I couldn't figure it out. As late as 1930, I find the family in the census under the Medlin name, but all the late records (WWI draft, social security death, etc.) all use the name Medley, but everything else appears to be the same. From your comment, I feel safe in going ahead and adding the Medley records.

I also have not found any thing earlier than the 1910 census when John was living with his cousin.

Thanks.

Looking for missing gggranduncle "Alvis?"

I am hoping someone may recognize this person. My gggrandfather, William Nelson Martin, b. 1816 KY =, had a half brother, named Uncle Alvis, Alvin. Alfred or similar. He went to California in the gold rush and is supposed to have died of heatstroke in Missouri, possibly Cedar County, around 1870 or 71. His last name may have been Martin or Heald, Heal, Hill ???. He was said to be married. His birthdate could be around 1824 to 1830. He had a half sister and at least four half siblings, Jemima, Rachel, William and Mary J.. His father died and the children of the first marriage were bound out, leaving Alvis? and a sister with their mother. Is anyone looking for someone from DeKalb Co b. circa 1822 to 1830. who fit the description of this man. There may have been some Indian blood. Also the family name was originally Spradlin,Sprackling or similar and was changed to Martin. Not sure when but family stories are proven through dna testing. Hoping someone knows who this family is.

Richard Parsley was my 3rd great grandfather. He is buried in Columbus, Ohio because it was Camp Chase POW Camp during the war. He never wanted to go to war in the first place, but he finally did go and was captured shortly thereafter. He died in that POW camp. During that time soldiers were generally buried where they were instead of where they were from. Hope this helps!

The Richard Parsley, aka Charles Carter, was in the Maryland Infantry. Richard Parsley married Petra Gerard in 1887 in New Mexico and had two sons. He entered the army as Charles Carter and died in a train wreck near Glidden, TX in 1891. His wife, Petra sued the railroad and won. There are several Richard Parsleys. I am no relation but have done research on this family for someone else.
Note added by David Johnson: Therefore the DeKalb Co., TN Richard Parsley was not the one who enlisted in Maryland for the Union as "Charles Carter", since he served in TN Confederate units only and also died in Ohio a few decades earlier.

It's great to find a website with new info my relatives. Myself and my cousin, Les Taylor, are direct descendents of Richard Parsley (Charles Carter)and Petra Gerard. [Our family has no idea why he changed his name. My cousin is still researching this mystery.]

We are both family line researchers looking for information on Petra Gerard. She may have been in Tenn. for a time because her husband traveled in the Army or was born there. Information on Petra is sketchy. We believe she was born Native American in October, 1868 in either Tenn., Nebraska, or Texas after her parents were killed in an Indian war with settlers (that's the family story) and was later adopted from an orphanage by Clement and Emilia Gerard (maiden name Vaulter). These "parent's" names were found on the marriage certificate filed in New Mexico. Were they her real parents?

My cousin, Les, and I would like to find any new information about Petra Gerard from this website, or perhaps you can direct us to other helpful websites. Thank you.
Note added by David Johnson: Once again, this Richard Parsley, AKA Charles Carter, is not the TN Richard Parsley, and was never in TN. See 1012b.

A distant cousin sent me the picture of Aunt Mary Wooldridge as an elderly woman. It is unmistakabley the same woman shown in the picture of the Wooldridge Family. I am trying to find out where her maiden name came from. I have seen it posted as Heal or Heald. With the photo came the message that she was related to the Martins. The picture was found in the family of William N Martin's grandaughter, Julia Adeline Martin, who was born in 1879 in Dist 5. Her father, Dr. John Marshall Martin, brought his family back to DeKalb Co. after being in Missouri for 20 years. He and Mary J both named a daughter Julia Adeline, almost the same date. My Martins and the Wooldridges had numerous connections for many years. I know that William, Jemima, Rachel and perhaps from 1 to 3 more little children were orphaned and bound out circa circa 1830. The two half siblings probably stayed with their mother and a step father. also looking for stories of a name change from Spradlin/Spradley/Spradling to Martin.

Looking for an "Uncle Alvis" who went to Missouri

I am looking for someone who was born circa 1820 to 1830. He was the half brother of my gggrandfather, William Nelson Martin and his sisters, Rachel Martin, Jemima Bethanie Martin (married L D Linder) and Mary J. who married William Melton Wooldridge. We have a written memoir by William's youngest son, Paris, who says his "uncle Alvis came to visit his family in Missouri (1870 or 71) and went back to Cedar County, MO where he died that summer of getting overheated in his fields". He also said that he was "a fine figure of a man, weighing 200 pounds" and that "he had gone to California to the gold rush". Since almost everyone in the family used their middle names, that may why I can't find him. Also he may be using a step father's last name. I have audited all available microfilm for that area of MO to no avail. I am hoping that someone has an ancestor Alvis that I can claim. Also, there is a slim chance that the transcriber of the handwritten memoirs may have misread the name and it could be Alvin. I am looking for leads. Thanks,
