The original town cemetery (from 1838) was just south of the present driveway and was a town lot 132 feet by 190 feet. By the 1870's this lot was almost filled and the Kennedy Cemetery north of town became the principal burying ground. Around 1900 new sections were opened both on the north and south of the original cemetery. By the 1950's there was no further room for expansion, so Whorton Springs and later DeKalb Memorial Gardens became the main burying grounds for the people of Smithville. The cemetery is located inside Smithville City limits. It was first copied by T. G. Webb in the 1950's and up-dated in July 1985 by Corina and again up-dated in March 1986 by Thomas G. Webb.
