William
Chigel Vanatta was the son of John and Katharine Measles Vanatta.
His middle name is spelled different ways, but I believe this is the
way it is spelled in the family Bible. Most people pronounced it as
“Cecil.” He was married twice. First, he married Mary Etta Bass on
September 22, 1892 in DeKalb Co., TN, and secondly, he married
Mary Ellen Barbee [no county marriage record, but were together in the
1930 census], the daughter of Elam Anderson Barbee and Martha Thompson
Barbee. Her birth and death dates are different on tombstone and death
certificate. She is buried in the next grave with a separate tombstone.

Etta Bass was born February 2, 1879. She was the daughter of William
Dolphen and Nancy Adelaine Prichard Bass. They had one son Dolphen
McKinley Vanatta. She died June 26, 1915 in DeKalb Co, TN.
Mary
Ellen Barbee Vanatta’s death certificate says she was born November 23,
1888 and died May 14, 1942 in Alexandria, DeKalb, TN and was buried May
15, 1942.
