Jasper Willius Vanatta [spelled as he signed his name on his WWI draft
registration] was born August 19, 1890 [WWI draft registration gives
birth as 1891] near Temperance Hall, DeKalb Co., TN to Jordan and
Sintha
Caroline Wauford Vanatta. He married Bessie Estes about 1918.
He was in the Tr. BN 157 Depot Brigade. He died on the ship enroute to
Europe of pneumonia on September 30, 1918.
Bessie Estes was born December 12, 1895, the daughter of Willie G.
Estes and Dora E. Lewis. Jasper and Bessie had one son: Eugene W.
Vanatta, born 1918/1919.
Eugene
had moved to Chicago, IL by the time of the 1940 census and was still
single, and that census stated he lived in Smithville, TN in 1935. SSDI
for "W E Vanatta" states he was born September 20, 1918 [ten days
before his father died] and died August 19, 2010 with last residence in
the zip code of Smithville, DeKalb Co., TN. The social security card
was issued in IL, corresponding with the 1940 census listing there.
There is an inscription on the tombstone.
