Amanda
J (July 26, 1852-May 17, 1899) & Doctor W Jenkins ( Aug. 14,
1844-Nov. 9, 1931)
Amanda J Roberts was the daughter of William Walter and Martha
Robinson Roberts, who were both born in Virginia (most likely Culpeper
County). Amanda was born July 26, 1852. She died May 17, 1899.
Doctor Wyatt Jenkins was the son of David Jenkins and Elizabeth
Vanatta. Since there was no marriage record, Elizabeth's maiden name is
proven by the death certificate of their son William, see below. Amanda
and Doctor W married August 15,
1873 in Wilson Co, TN. He died in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN
with cancer at the age 87, and died November 9, 1931. He was a
carpenter, never an MD. The informant on his death certificate was his
daughter, Mrs Willie Holland, who had married Harvey Holland
on May 24, 1913 in Davidson Co., TN.
In
the first census, 1880, after Doctor and Amanda married they were
living at Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN and had a daughter Eva b. abt.
1874. By 1900 Amanda had died and Doctor W. Jenkins had moved to
Davidson Co., TN where he is listed in the 1900 census of District 2,
Davidson Co., TN, household 12/12, as a widower. He had several
children with him in 1900, born to he and Amanda before her death: Evie
(May 1877 [wrong year?]), Alonzo M. (Nov 1882), Walter W. (Sept 1884),
Charlie W. (Sept 1887) and Willie E. (f) (Nov 1892). In 1910 D W
Jenkins was in District 3, Davidson Co., TN. In the 1930 census, a year
before his death, "D W Jenkins" was living with his daughter Willie and
her husband Harvey Holland in District 22, Wilson Co., TN.
There
is a mistake that is being circulated about Doctor Jenkins's
middle name. His parents had two sons whose names began with "W", being
Wyatt (age 17) and William (age 16), as both are seen in the 1860
census of
DeKalb Co., TN. Better records will show that these two birth years are
not necessarily correct (William's death cert. states he was born in
1845 and Doctor's cert. states he was born in 1844). The two have been
confused, and since Doctor Jenkins refused
to ever list his middle name to prove what his "W" stood for, people
have assumed it was William, because, it seems, that his death record
states he was born in 1844, matching "William" Jenkins in the 1860
census. Truth it turns out is that William M. Jenkins died in 1926 in
Jasper Co., MO where his death certificate states his parents were
David Jenkins and __ Vanatta (now from this MO. death cert. we know
that
David's wife, Elizabeth was a Vanatta). Since William was in MO at the
same time that Doctor was in TN, it proves that Doctor's middle name
was Wyatt. Continuing with more information about William M. Jenkins,
his first wife Mary Elizabeth Jones is buried also in this Vanatta
Cemetery in the same cluster of two rows among the Jenkins siblings
(children of David and Elizabeth) and their spouses and families.
William was married to Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jones on December
25, 1868, and she died in 1870, and then William later married
Mary Elizabeth Fite in DeKalb Co., TN on January 5, 1876. More
detail about William M. Jenkins appears on the page for Mary Elizabeth
"Lizzie" (Jones) Jenkins.
