As required by law, I have made out a statement of the receipts and disbursements of the County funds during the
year 1896 and posted said statement on the Courthouse door. In order that the tax-payers of DeKalb county may have
fuller opportunity to acquire a knowledge to the way in which our revenue is expended and our prospects of getting
out of debt, I herewith send you a copy of my statement for publication in your paper. [all listed] --- J.E.

In Memoriam
God's finger touched him and he slept. Mr. Isaac Mullinax was born Jan. 14, 1812, died Dec. 17, 1896. In
the death of this brother, the family loses the loving care of husband and father and the community one of the
oldest and best Christians.

Mr. John Turney, who has been sick of pneumonia, is improving slowly.
Death has again visited our community and laid his icy finger upon one of our most esteemed friends, Mrs.
James Turner, who died Monday, Jan. 11, of lagrippe. She was 84 years of age and leaves many warm friends to
mourn the loss of one so dear.
Mrs. W.E. Rich is on the punny list.
Miss Bell Walden visited Misses Lissie and Cynthia Mullinax Saturday night.
Miss Mary Hays is visiting Miss Laura Turney this afternoon.
Mr.& Mrs. C.D. Jennings were visiting the family of J.M. Hays today.
Messrs. Joe Ford and Marvin Jennings of this place will enter school at Liberty, Jan. 18.

Vick & Bright vs. O.D. Walker, et als
Pursuant to a decree
at its November term, 1896, I will offer for sale Monday, Feb. 1, 1897,
the following tract
of land of 50 acres situated in the 6th civil district of DeKalb county: bounded on the North by Walker,
South by Rhea, East by Caney Fork river, and West by Womack. Levied on as the property of O.D.
Walker, he having moved with his family from the state of Tennessee. This attachment is levied on the back
of an attachment issued on the 20 of Aug. 1896, by W.T. Dozier in case of C.B. Williams vs. O.D.
Walker.
Bertie Barbee vs. John D. Bone
By virtue of a decree
in the case of Bertie Barbee, Guard., against John D. Bone et als, I will
on January 30, 1897, at the courthouse door in Smithville, Tenn., sell to the highest bidder for cash the lands
mentioned and described in the pleadings as the lands of R.M. Bone, situated in the 1st civil district of
DeKalb and the boundaries will be given on the day of sale.

News Taken From Our County Exchanges
Rutherford County -- The News
Last week a colored boy found $240 in gold on the farm of D.P. Rankin. Mr. Rankin on learning of
this investigated for himself and found $120 more. All were in twenty dollar gold pieces.
Charles McUin was pardoned by Governor Turney last week and arrived home last Thursday and has
been busy ever since receiving the congratulations of his friends. He was sent up over a year ago for killing John
Burnett over on Depot Hill one night.
John Cawthon, colored, and Jim Whitaker, colored, had a difficulty last Saturday night which ended
in Cawthon using a knife, which severed an artery in Whittaker's arm and came very near causing him
to bleed to death, but the timely assistance of a doctor quenched the flow of blood, though Whittaker is
still in a dangerous condition.
Mr. Vaughn Hartman, who was shot by Milt Gard near Quebec, Warren County, died last Thursday morning.
The remains were brought home the same day. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church last Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. G.W. Patterson. The burial took place at Evergreen Cemetery.
The entire community deeply sympathise with Dr.& Mrs. Hartman.
Putnam County -- The Citizen
Ed Cullom of Hartsville has opened a billiard hall on the second floor of the Stayley Building.
J.W. Chilcutt has sold the Elipse Barber Shop to W.A. Wirt, who will take charge Feb. 1.
Mrs. C.H. Whitney fell down cellar last week and sustained serious injuries from which she has since
been confined to her bed.
R.B. Capshaw, Esq. is getting material on the ground to build two handsome double offices on the northwest
corner of the public square.
Hon. John S. Denton, now of Washington, D.C. and F.T. Fancher, of this place, have formed a legal
partnership and opened an office in Cookeville.
Thomas McCarroll returned to his home at Charleston, S.C. last Monday after spending several weeks visiting
this place. His wife will remain a few weeks longer.
Mrs. J.C. Gabbart is very sick at her home in north Cookeville.
Judge B.M. Webb and wife of Smithville are the guests of R.B. Capshaw, Esq. of this place.
Mrs. America Terry, mother of J.W.H. Terry, residing three miles north of Cookeville, is dangerously
sick.
Wilson County -- The Democrat
Miss Jones of Indiana and Miss Lizzie Wallace left Saturday for New Orleans to spend the winter.
They were accompanied as far as Nashville by Lillie Wallace, who returned on the afternoon train.
Mr.& Mrs. Merriman of Syracuse, N.Y. are here visiting their daughter, Mrs. Dr. Huffman. They
were accompanied by a son about 12 years of age, who has entered the preparatory department of Cumberland University.
Prof. Isaac Buchanan, assistant teacher of mathematics in Cumberland University, leaves on the 19th for
England, where he goes to take a course of higher mathematics in Oxford University.
Cards are announcing the approaching marriage of Hon. Benton McMillin to Miss Aletheia Lucile Foster
of Shreveport, La. It will take place Wednesday, January 20th, at 6 p.m. o'clock in the First Presbyterian Church.
Tom Arrington and Ed Schott have bought out the bakery formerly owned by Ike Odum on East
Main street. Ed Schott was in business here several years ago with his brother, J.F. Schott.
Alexandria
Liv Tubb has sold his furniture to the Lester Furniture Co. and they will add to the stock. Granville
Lester will have charge of the business. Liv Tubb retained carpets, shades, matting, etc.
Barry Bros. have moved into their new store house.
R.B. Floyd will arrange the rooms over Goodner & Son, S.W. McClellan and The Bank,
for furniture.
Dr. Sam McMillen went to Smithville Monday on business.
Hatton Shaver and Erwin Kennedy were here Sunday.
Miss Linnie Smith has returned from a visit to friends at Smithville.
Mrs. Robt. Patton (nee Miss Alice Marler) died this morning of pneumonia after a few days illness.
Mrs. Robt. Donnell is visiting her mother, Mrs. W.W. Patterson, near town.
Miss Creola Flippen and sister were here yesterday.
Mrs. T.W. Eason and daughter will visit relatives in Nashville this week.
Rev. John Stevens has returned to Alexandria.
Rev. Jack Lewis preached at the Cumberland Church Sunday evening.
Robert Reynold of Temperance Hall was in town today.
Joe Rutland is in Alexandria.

Tom Whaley of Smithville visited relatives here Sunday.
Mrs. W.R. Bratten and grandson, Arthur, are on the sick list.
Rev. Mr. McClusky is making some improvements to his dwelling.
Misses Belle Wheeler and Mary Flippen were visiting in town Monday.
Robert Stone returned from Woodbury Monday from a visit to relatives.
Little Nonie Bratten of Watertown is visiting relatives and friends here.
Rev. G.B. McPeak preached an able discourse Sunday on the subject of Education.
W.J. Gothard went to Smithville Saturday night in the interest of his school here.
Prof. Killman is teaching a class of several young men in stenography at his residence.
R.C. Stewart and Joe Miller of Woodbury were here last Friday. Mr. Stewart bought 13 mules.
Harry Robinson, a promising young lawyer of the Smithville bar was here yesterday.
Oscar Robinson and Lemuel McClusky will start to South Carolina next Monday to sell fruit trees.
W.B. Evans is road overseer for the streets, J.B. Womack for the Dismal road and J.T. Odom
for the Griffith road.
Liberty gets the weather forecasts every morning at 8 o'clock. The signals are displayed from a 60 foot pole
in front of Vick & Bright's store.
L.D. Yeargin of the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co. has been here a week looking after some thresher
sales.
Tom White and Bob McClellan will go to Kentucky next week to sell fruit trees for the Humboldt
Nursery. About ten young men from Watertown will go with them.
A cute and flattering notice of Killman & Bratten's scale appeared in Sunday's American. The boys
have several nice offers from eastern manufactures, all of which they have declined to date.
It was reported here last Saturday that Jas. H. Cummings of Woodbury was dead, but we have learned that
is not true and that he is better. This was welcome news to his friends here.
J.B.Collins is recovering from a long spell of the fever.
A little child of Mrs. Wm. Hancock on Sycamore died last Saturday night.
Ed Robinson made a business trip for Vick & Bright into Smith county this week.
Esq. Wm. Hunt of Smith county was in this country on business last Friday.
Hon. G.N. Tillman has withdrawn his notice of contest on account of the heavy bond required.
