Grave House, Grave Shelter
(a.k.a. grave-box, grave-house, gravehouse, grave shed, grave shelter,
lattice hut, spirit house)
THESE four post-1933 images presented on this page represent two
extremes of grave house design. The first image (Pine Crest Cemetery), displays sturdy brick construction and is of a
size that could contain multiple graves. The last image (Crenshaw County) shows wood construction and contains a
single grave. Because of the open nature of these structures, some folk prefer to call this type,
grave shelters.
The four images are from the
Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) collection, Library of Congress, Prints and Photograph Division, Washington, D.C. 20540 USA.
