Nolen Thompson, Bells

Nolen Thompson, age 85, retired candy salesman, died Saturday, January 11, 2003, at the Regional Hospital of Jackson.

Mr. Thompson was born and reared in Henderson County, the son of the late Will and Lessie Holmes Thompson. He farmed as a young man and served in the U.S. Army during WWII, stationed on Ascension Island. He worked for Turner Dairy and Curtis Candy Company, and then worked as a self-employed candy salesman till his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Poplar Heights Baptist Church in Jackson.

He was married to Mattie Sue Clark in 1967 and they lived in Jackson most of their married life, having moved to Bells two years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie Sue Thompson, of Bells; a daughter, Brenda Hanna, of Henderson; two step-daughters, Donna Thomas of Alamo and Gaye Jordan of Bells; and a sister, Mae Dell Chumney, of Bath Springs. He has five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diane Thompson; two brothers, Everitt Thompson and Willard Thompson; and a sister, Nina Sue Thompson.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. today from the Chapel of Casey Funeral Home with Rev. James E. Bittner and Rev. Douglas Brewer officiating and burial will follow in the Johnsons Cross Cemetery near Jacks Creek.
