Dr. W. H. Stallings

Services for Dr. William H. Stallings who died about noon Monday at the Baptist hospital in Memphis, were held Wednesday at 2:30 at the Friendship Baptist Church, Rev. L. W. Todd, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Bellvernon Cemetery with the Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

Dr. Stallings was 72 and was born and reared near Friendship, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Stallings. He graduated from Friendship schools and received his degree in medicine from the University of Tennessee school of medicine in 1915 and returned to Friendship where he practiced his profession for sometime.

Dr. Stallings later became interested in politics and served as Mayor of Friendship for a number of years. He was a member of the Crockett County Court for 32 years, resigning six months ago. He was at one time Chairman of the County Court.

He was also a former member of the Tennessee Legislature, serving three terms in the House and one term in the Senate.

He was a director of the Bank of Friendship for 31 years and engaged in many business activities during his long and successful career. He owned and operated extensive farming interests in Crockett and Dyer Counties.

He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Dr. Stallings was named medical director at the Milan Arsenal at Milan during World War II and at the time of his death was serving as occupational health service officer at the Redstone Arsenal at Huntsville, Ala.

His wife, Mrs. Lela Scales Stallings; his daughter, Mrs. M. V. Williams Jr. of Friendship; five sisters, Mrs. W.A. Lemons of Memphis, Mrs. N.C. Warren of Tigrett, Mrs. Annie Lou Baker of Friendship, Mrs. A.J. Hayes of Abilene, Texas and Mrs. Lyle Koonce of Marfa, Texas; two brothers, Dr. H.B. Stallings of Humboldt and Thomas Stallings of Greenville, Miss.; four grandchildren, Bill Williams of Memphis, Mike Williams, Brenda Williams and Dorothy Williams, all of Friendship, survive.
