William P. Matthews

William P. Matthews, Crockett County livestock farmer, was killed early Saturday morning when his truck was struck by an L. & N freight train at Jones, five miles south of Bells. He was 49.

Services were held at the First Christian Church at 3 Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Mr. Motley of Bells and the Rev. Mr. Phillips of Memphis officiating. Burial in Bells Cemetery with Goosmann Undertakers in charge.

Mr. Matthews was born and reared in Bells, with the exception of several years when he lived in Madison County. While in Madison County he joined the First Christian Church at Jackson.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Nora Herndon Matthews; nine children, Charles E. Matthews, Mrs. Dewey Hopper, William D. Matthews, Margaret Matthews, Mrs. Betty Golden, all of Memphis, Mrs. O'Neal Privett of Alamo, Mrs. Zolon Jacock, Miss Evelyn Matthews and Clarence Matthews, all of Bells; two brothers, Carl and Floyd Matthews of Jackson, and three sisters, Mrs. Hortense Bailey, Mrs. Lester Williams and Mrs. Martha B. Caraway, all of Jackson, Tenn.
