Killed In Plane Crash

A small plane carrying two young Memphians, former Crockett County boys, dived into a field near Crockett Mills Wednesday of last week, instantly killing both fliers.

Finis Fennell, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Fennell, of Crockett Mills and John Hollis Cogburn, 21, son of Hollis Cogburn of near Crockett Mills, employees of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., in Memphis, were killed in the crash. Fennell, pilot of the plane, had landed at the home of his parents earlier in the day and the two boys were on their way back to Memphis, flying low over the Cogburn farm when the accident occured.

Services for young Fennell were held at the Friendship Church of Christ Friday at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Sudbury Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Marshall and Frank Fennell of Gates, Arnold Fennell of Chicago and W. H. Fennell of Crockett Mills; three sisters, Mrs. William Myers of Trenton, Mrs. Paul Meeks of Friendship and Miss Geraldine Fennell of Crockett Mills. He was a fine young man and had many friends. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Young Cogburn was born in Memphis April 1, 1925, moving with his parents to Crockett mills where he spent the most of his life. He graduated from Crockett Mills High School in 1943 and was loved and respected by his fellow students and teachers. He was a faithful member of Barker's Chapel Baptist Church. His father, Hollis Cogburn and one sister, Bettye, survive.
