J. C. Casey Obituary |
J.C. Casey, Civil War veteran died here Tuesday morning at one o'clock, at the ripe old age of 84 years, eight months and 18 days. The following account of his splendid Christian gentleman's life was written by a friend: James Charles Casey was born March 5, 1842. He was reared in Crockett County and was engaged in farming until the Civil war, through which he served under General Forrest, a man to whom he seemed devoted ever since. He was very proud of the fact that he fought for the South and loved to talk of different events of the war. On August 17, 1870, at the age of 28, he was married to Lennessee Francis Casey, his 21 year old cousin. They have been a very devoted couple and have lived in one house since their marriage. He is the father if five children, two daughters, both of whom are dead, and three sons, Egbert Casey, of Steele, MO., Nolan Casey of Paris, Tenn., and Gilford Casey of Crockett County. He had been a successful farmer ever since the war until confined to his bed July 5, 1926. Since then he has been almost helpless. He wanted no nurse except his wife and she had hardly left his bedside since his illness developed. He had very often expressed his willingness to go when his God was ready for him, and seemed to hold no fear of death, for he felt secure in the fact that he had been an active member of the Church of Christ from 1874 until he became too feeble to attend services. Since then he has been with the church in spirit, even though he was not able to be with it in the body. All together he has been a Christian for 52 years. He requested that his burial be very simple and that he night be laid to rest in garments made by the hands of his wife who is now 77 years of age. We all have faith enough to believe that his soul has gone to rest, and even though we cannot restrain ourselves from mourning our loss, we realize that God's will and not ours must be done, and we try to console ourselves with the hope, that if we do our duty as faithfully as well as he has done we will all meet up yonder in a brighter and fairer land. Funeral services were held from the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Elder D.D. Woody officiating. Interment was held at the family burying ground. Pallbearers were: A.J. Casey, Nolan Casey, Gilford Casey, Arthur Casey, R.E. Casey, E. Casey, Byron Casey and Bennie Casey. **I don't know what paper this was in. It was among my great-grandmothers papers. His wife was Tennessee Francis Casey. I am looking for help with my Casey family. RE (Robert Edgar) was my GG grandfather, Byron was my G-grandfather. I suspect the E. Casey listed may be Everett Casey.** |
