From a Portageville, MO, newspaper, 16 Nov 1939 Cora C. Avery, the beloved wife of J. H. Avery of Marston, died at her home in Marston at 7:30 Tuesday morning, October 31st, following a stroke of paralysis. She was 52 years, 3 months and 16 days old, having been born July 15th, 1887 at Alamo, Tenn., the daughter of Hugh and Mary [Davis] Branch. March 22nd, 1908 she was united in marriage to J. H. Avery at Alamo, Tenn., to which union were born three sons, Remus Arline, James Roland, and Sam H., all of whom reside at Marston. Following her marriage she resided at Alamo, Tenn., moving to Steele and then to Marston several years ago. Besides her husband and two sons mentioned above she is survived by two grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. R. B. Fewell and Mrs. E. G. Randall of Alamo, Tenn., and one brother, Bryant Branch of Alamo, and a great many friends in Steele, her home before moving to Marston, and the many who learned to love and respect her at Marston. She was member of the Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. J. Smith of Jonesboro, Ark., at the Evergreen Baptist church in Marston, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 1st. Mrs. Avery was a fine Christian woman and had the admiration and respect of all who knew her. Interment was made in the family lot at the mounds Park Cemetery on Highway 61. Pall bearers were nephews of the deceased and were as follows: Harry and Roy Fewell of Marston, Levin Fewell, Slayton, Hugh and Emanuel Randall, E. H. Branch and J. H. Tucker, all of Tennessee. Relatives and friends from out-of-town attending the services were sisters, Mrs. R. B. Fewell, Mrs. E. G. Randell, thirteen nephews and nieces all of Alamo, Tenn., Mrs. Dr. Penick, mother of Mr. Avery of Jackson, Tenn., Hon. J. B. Avery and wife, brother of Mr. Avery, J. B. Fewell, of Alamo, Tenn., and friends from Marston, Steele and other points in the country, also Mrs. Fred Hester of Jonesboro, Ark., a girlhood friend of the deceased.
