J. T. Stamps
J. T. Stamps was born in that part of Haywood County that now forms a portion of Crockett County, Tenn., June 24, 1844, one of three surviving members of a family of five children born to Norman and Nancy (Harrell) Stamps, who were born in 1818 � the former in Bedford County, Tenn., May 6, and the latter in North Carolina. Norman Stamps moved to Haywood County in 1836, but is now a resident of the Eight District of Crockett County. He is a farmer. J. T. Stamps was educated in the district schools of Crockett County, and December 12, 1865, was united in marriage to Cynthia A., daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Bell. Mrs. Stamps is a native of Dyer County, born December 30, 1847. They have nine children: Amanda E. (Mrs. B. H. Aspray), Sarah F., Almeda, Nannie B., James F. Effie F., Laura, Edgar and Lula. Mr. Stamps located on his present farm shortly after his marriage. He owns 150 acres of valuable and well improved land; has always been a thorough business man. In 1876 he was elected magistrate of his district, and has been elected each succeeding term to the present time. He is a Democrat, and a member of the Mason fraternity, and he and wife belong to the Christian Church. In 1864 he enlisted in the Federal Army, joining Company E, Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry. He was captured at Fort Pillow and taken to Andersonville, Ga., where we was retained five months, and then taken to Florence, S. C., and kept three months. He rejoined the army, but was soon discharged, and returned home. |
