R. R. Smith

R. R. Smith, an enterprising citizen of the Thirteenth District, was born in North Carolina July 4, 1848, and is the son of Eli and Lely Smith, both natives of North Carolina, the former born in 1811, and the latter in 1816. The father died in 1876 and the mother in 1865. Our subject received a fair education in the common schools of his neighborhood, and July 12, 1877, he united his fortunes with those of Miss M. A. Allbritton, a native of Tennessee, born May 1, 1854, and the daughter of James and Sally A. Allbritton. To our subject and wife were born four children: Lucy N., William R., James Eli and I. A. N. Mr. Smith has been a farmer most of the time, though for three years, while at Memphis, he was engaged in the real estate business as agent. In connection with his farming interest, he dealt considerably in stock. Mr. Smith is a strong advocate for internal improvement, and in politics is an ardent Republican. He takes an active part in the politics of his county. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., and also a member of the Christian Church. Mrs. Smith is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
