Dr. W. H. Poindexter
Dr. W. H. Poindexter is a North Carolinian, born June 1, 1837. His father, Col. William Poindexter, was born in 1798, and died about 1867. He was a soldier and officer in the Mexican war. His wife, Ann Eliza Poindexter, was born in North Carolina, and died in 1861. Dr. W. H. Poindexter came to Tennessee about 1858, and located in Rutherford County, where he continued to reside until the date of the late war, when he joined Company K, Forty-fifth Tennessee Infantry, and served throughout the war. In January, 1865, he was wounded in the left ankle at Egypt, Miss., and was captured and taken to Johnson�s Island; but as he was a surgeon, was released almost immediately. He returned home and continued practicing his profession in Rock Spring Academy. He began the study of medicine under Dr. Joseph H. Nelson in 1858, and entered the medical department of the University of Nashville, and graduated in the spring on 1860. In 1868 he came to Johnson�s Grove, and has been a very successful practitioner up to this date. He was married in 1860 to Jemimah S. Nelson, daughter of Dr. Joseph H. and Elizabeth S. Nelson.Our subject is a self-made man and is much esteemed for his many good qualities. He is a Mason and a Democrat dyed in the wool. |
