H. H. Mahon was born October 7, 1825, in Person County, N. C. His father,
Henry Mahon, was a native of Ireland, and came to the State of Virginia
at the age of twenty-one years. He there married Martha Epperson, and soon
after moved to North Carolina, where he lived until about the year of 1830,
at which date he died while moving to this portion of the State. The mother
died in Haywood County, in 1850. Our subject is the eighth of nine children
born to these parents. He was reared on a farm, and when twenty-five years
old was elected constable and later deputy sheriff and sheriff, in which
several capacities he served in Haywood County about eighteen years, his
official services ending in 1867. In the meantime he read law, and about
this time began practicing the same, which occupation he has successfully
followed to the present time. December 24, 1850, he married Matilda C.
Holden, who has borne him one child, who died in infancy. Mr. Mahon is
essentially a self-made man, and acquired much of his education by hard
study after he reached maturity. He is a Mason, and is a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is a Knight Templar, and politically
is a Republican.
