John Ball
Born in 1843 in Cocke County, Tennessee, the son
of Nigel Ball and Mary "Polly" Hall Ball.
Married Mourning Cagle about 1866 in Cocke County, Tennessee.
She was born in 1845 in Cocke County and died before 1870 in
Cocke County, the daughter of George Cagle and Cynthia James Cagle.
Served in Company F of the 8th Tennessee Cavalry (USA) and was
recorded as having deserted the company on or about September 17,
1863. He was dishonorably discharged on 24 July 1874 by the U.S.
War Department and forfeited all pay and bounty due to him. He was
enumerated in District 13 of Cocke County in the 1890 Union Veterans Census.
Died between 1910 and 1920 in Cocke County.
He was the son-in-law of Cocke County Civil War veteran George
Messer Cagle. He was a first cousin of Lucinda Hall James, the
wife of Cocke County Civil War veteran William James. William
James was the uncle of his wife Mourning Cagle. Cocke County Civil
War veteran David Knight was the husband of his wife Mourning's aunt,
Nancy James Knight.
