Dennis b. 18 June 1868 Cannon Co.,TN d. 12 Jan 1958 Cannon Co.,TN<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is a family history manuscript written by R.A. Dennis. (I am not sure if anyone really knows the exact time frame for when this began or when the last notes were made. There are events or dates mentioned in the manuscript that indicate 1940 &#8211; 1959) Keep in mind as you read this that the language and terms used were normal for that time period. There are known errors in the manuscript along with improper spelling of many words and names. The handwritten manuscript has been typed as written, errors and all. This is being provided as a research tool for you. If you find a link you should pursue it through further research and obtain documentation to substantiate the research. Notes have been added to my copy of the manuscript that I have included in brackets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">REMARKS<\/span><\/strong><\/center><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is a true manuscript of the KING family so far as it is stated by the Author.\u00a0 Dates, deaths, births, marriages and various other things are lacking to make the manuscript interesting.\u00a0 All who read this script are free to correct\u00a0 dates, fill in blank spaces left for that purpose.\u00a0 I am sure many errors are related here and I wish you to feel free to correct such.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (signed)\u00a0 R. Dennis<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To write a correct manuscript of the KING family one has to begin way back in Virginia.\u00a0 The KINGS sprang from the Adams and Keaton people on their mothers&#8217; side.\u00a0 Great Grandfather ROBERT KING&#8217;S history is as far back as I can go on the first father&#8217;s side.\u00a0 ROBERT KING, Born 1785, Died 1863.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The first JACOB ADAMS was born in Virginia 1735.\u00a0 His wife&#8217;s name is blotted out but her first name was Mary.\u00a0 This Jacob and Mary had a family of four sons and five girls.\u00a0 The boys were Jacob, Jr., Peter, Isaac, and William.\u00a0 The Daughter:\u00a0 Mary (married Richard Hancock), Barb Lydia (married Dr. Sam Tittle), Rebecca (married James Hollandsworth), Sally (married Cornelious Keaton), and Susan Elizabeth (married Jack Keaton).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JACK KEATON and his wife&#8217;s issue was two sons and three girls.\u00a0 William Jackson (married a Miss Holland), and Neal (married Miss Harris). The daughters were as follows:\u00a0 Morning (married Bill Kelly), Jeannie (married P. A. Keaton), and Lydia (married Great Grandfather ROBERT KING in Virginia in 1808.\u00a0 Kelley and his wife, Morning Keaton, married in Virginia. [Wilson Co Tn] Lydia and Morning were married when their sister, Jeannie was\u00a0 born in 1810.\u00a0 The Adams, Keatons, Hancocks, Kelleys, and King a branch of the Tittles, Higgins, and others here in Tennessee are all one family of intellectual people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">James Hollandsworth and Cornelious Keaton and their Adams wives never did come to Tenn.\u00a0 [see Tn Cousins for Cornelouis Keaton] Neither did any of the boys but Jacob, Jr.\u00a0 Robert Kings home was on Sycamore Creek upon a branch, or small creek, called the King Branch.\u00a0 His farm included all the land on the entire branch around the meanders of the ridges on either side of the branch.\u00a0 Nine hundred acres was the size of his farm.\u00a0 It was in Wilson and Smith Counties until [after]1835 when Cannon County was created.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I will be unable to list all names of the KING family and I will leave blank spaces for others to list names in that are left out; not written down.\u00a0 I can trace the first and second KING generations very well.\u00a0 I am a little blank on the younger KING people.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> ROBERT KING and his wife, Lydia Keaton, brought up a family of six sons and five daughters.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The first son of Robert and Lydia King was born in 1810. They called him WILLIAM (Bill).\u00a0 He was my wife&#8217;s grandfather.\u00a0 He married Nancy Kelley. They brought up five boys and six girls.\u00a0 Liz, Bill&#8217;s oldest daughter married Harvey Dodd.\u00a0 I now only three sons of Liz and Harvey&#8217;s family:\u00a0 William, Milton, and Dave Dodd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Lydia King married Joe Knight.\u00a0 Ulysses and Richard, two sons, are all I know.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> [Robert King to Lydia Keaton Mar 2, 1812 Wilson Co Tn , William Kelley to Morning Keaton Oct 5, 1812 Wilson Co Tn. We must remember that we have greater helps with our ___ than this great Historian Mr. R.A. Dennis had. AUGUST 1959.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Lydia King and Joe Knight raised five sons and four daughters.\u00a0 The sons were -Bill, Ulysses, Richard, Oliver, and Jodie.\u00a0 The daughters were: Mannie, Lucy, Mai, and Mollie.\u00a0 Ulysses married Ella Byars.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> [Mollie Knight to Brown Spurlock]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Mary Ann King married Mon Haley. Hardy, Lige, Albert, and Sampson were the boys.\u00a0 Monroe went away and I lost sight of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Morn married Jackson King. One daughter graced their home.\u00a0 By way of fondness they called her Kandace.\u00a0 She married Lee Vickers.\u00a0 All deceased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Emaline King married John Campbell.\u00a0 They died childless. [John Campbell married 1st Any Elizabeth Haley-seceral dau &amp; sons]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Grandfather Bill&#8217;s son, and grandson of ROBERT KING, Robert, Jr. married Frances Mahaffa.\u00a0 They reared a family of four sons and four daughters.\u00a0 Will (Bud) was feeble minded.\u00a0 He lived to an old age and died.\u00a0 Jasper married Malenda Hayes and then removed to Texas.\u00a0 They are dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Manny King married Luanie Williams\u00a0 Two daughters were born to them.\u00a0 One of them married Raymond Beckton.\u00a0 The other one married a Mr. Smith\u00a0 Manny&#8217;s first wife died and he married Rachel Pistole.\u00a0 They live at Liberty, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Oscar King, son of Robert King, Jr.. and grandson of Bill King, married Loucinda Adamson.\u00a0 They went to Texas early in life and died in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Robert King&#8217;s daughters, granddaughters of Bill King, and Great grand -daughters of Robert and Lydia\u00a0 King,\u00a0 Sr:\u00a0 Jenny married Andy Hayes.\u00a0 Their children Bob, Many, Adda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sara King married John Keaton.\u00a0 Their Issue:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Robert Jr.&#8217;s Daughter, Martha, married Dyer Rich.\u00a0 They removed to Texas and died there years ago.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Nora married Martin Stanley.\u00a0 He died and she married Wilson Bery.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t write up their issue.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Tip King, son of Bill King and grandson of Robert King, Sr., married John Mathis&#8217;s daughter.\u00a0\u00a0 They had one heir,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Janny.\u00a0 Tip died a prisoner of war in Illinois, 1863. Taylor, a son of the same King family, died in prison also.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JAKE KING, son of Bill King, and grandson of Robert King, Sr., married Tabitha\u00a0\u00a0 Bratcher.\u00a0 They reared two sons:\u00a0 Allen (Dock) King, and William (Pete)King, Jake and Talitha had one daughter, Ardelia.\u00a0 She married R. A. Dennis, author of this script.\u00a0 She died the 19th of September 1904.\u00a0 Her son, Jake, resides in Woodbury, Tennessee and Sam Dennis lives in Chicago, Ill.\u00a0 Jake Dennis married Kathlyn Bell Barrnett.\u00a0 Their children-three boys and six girls; five daughters and two son living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JOHN KING, son of Bill King and grandson of Robert King, SR. married Lucy Barrett.\u00a0\u00a0 Their sons were Bill, Eb, Taylor, Amber, and Hatton;\u00a0 The daughters were Allie and Lula; Allie married George Taylor or Bill\u00a0 married Jeannie Hale, Eb married &#8212;&#8211;,. Taylor died single, Hatton married Kiney Keaton, Amber , ___________, Lula married Lonnie Denton\u00a0 (name added by W. S. King Aug 1959)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Page 3<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JAMES KING, second son of ROBERT KING, SR., born 1817, married Agnes Stricklin (B. 1809; D. Oct. 31, 1884)\u00a0 James and Agnes raised five sons and three girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">CIDNEY ALEXANDER was the first son (b. 1831).\u00a0 Alex, as he was called by all people, married Sarah Ann Bogle.\u00a0 Their issue was as follows:\u00a0 Edna married Bill Moss:\u00a0 Their issue William B. Moss &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- Swan &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Sallie married Charlie Hale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ISSUE OF EDNA AND BILL MOSS ADDED BY W. S. KING AUG 1959.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Samatha married Henry Keaton.\u00a0 Their children were-Lillie married Ben St. John; Helen married Albert Hoody (He died and she married John Robertson, who was killed by a car driven by Nel Hale Jan 17, 1952).\u00a0 Minnie married Roy Grizzle (She died in her 63rd year. Apr 23, 1952).\u00a0 Walter married Lula Williams (Walter is dead).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Amanda Jayne married Jim Scott.\u00a0 They had no heirs,\u00a0 One or two girls died very young.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Martha married Luther _____________.\u00a0 She died April 15, 1952 Cidney Alex and Sarah Ann had four sons.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> James Daniel married Darthula Raikes.\u00a0 Their children are as follows:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Sterling King married a Miss Morris.\u00a0 Frank King married Alice Davenport daughter of William B. Davenport.\u00a0 Frank and Alice brought up two girls;\u00a0 Gracie married Lee Powell, Grada married Caris Kennedy ADDED AUG 1959<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Pharris King married Media Melton.\u00a0 Their children are as follows: ______________?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JAMES KING, son of James King and grandson of ROBERT KING, SR., married Nancy Ann Partan.\u00a0 Jeames and wife reared a family of three sons and three daughters.\u00a0 Four are dead; two living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">LESTER KING, Jeames&#8217; eldest son, married Nan Keaton.\u00a0 Their issue one son and three girls.\u00a0 Robert married John D. Campbell&#8217;s daughter.\u00a0 She died and he married a Miss Mitchell.\u00a0 Callie married Chalmus Vance.\u00a0 Eva married Oscar Davis.\u00a0 They parted and she married Carl Cunnings.\u00a0 Ola married Ray Vance.\u00a0 Ray and Chalmus Vance are brothers. Both are dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">MARVIN KING, Jeames&#8217;s son, married Jim Derting&#8217;s girl.\u00a0 Herschel married away from here.\u00a0 Jeames King&#8217;s girls-Florence married John Banks.\u00a0 Callie, Sr. married Mr. Curtis.\u00a0 Nola died years ago, 1880.\u00a0 Lester King is a high toned type of humanity.\u00a0 He is easy to approach pleasant to be with.\u00a0 He is discreet in his talk, polished in his manners and one of the refinest conversationalists and silver-tongued entertainers one ever had the pleasure to be with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JACKSON KING, James&#8217; third son, is written up in Bill King&#8217;s family report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JORDAN KING, son of James, Sr., married Martha Bogle.\u00a0 Martha died and Jordan married Martha Haley.\u00a0 Sampson King is their only heir.\u00a0 Martha Haley died and Jordan married Cynthia Fuston Allen.\u00a0 They died at Gath, Tenn.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> FOLLOWING ADDED AUG 1959<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Sampson (son of Jordan and Martha Haley) B. Oct 24, 1879, married Nora Belle McGregor (B. Jan. 20, 1879)\u00a0 Their issue 3 sons, 1 daughter.:\u00a0 Garland (B. 9-9-1906) M. Hazel Crawford (B. 5-6-1944)\u00a0 Newell James (B. 10-21-1911 D. Oct 5, 1914)\u00a0 Fana Belle (B. 7-21-1915) m. James S. Goodlet, Kermit Stokley (B. 9 -24-1920) Unmarried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">HENRY KING, son of James King, Sr., and grandson of ROBERT KING, SR., married Amanda Keaton.\u00a0 Rece, Matthew, and Malley were the boys. Rece married Nancy Rich.\u00a0 She died Jan 1942, Rece King, 79, died Jan 24, 1954.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Page 4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Matilda and Hattie were the girls.\u00a0 Matilda married Lester Young.\u00a0 Hattie died unmarried. They are all gone to the Great Beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">James King&#8217;s daughters:\u00a0 Lyda married James Knight.\u00a0 Eliza, Betty and Jiny their heirs.\u00a0 Knight died and Lydia married Daniel Bryson.\u00a0 Bob and Nancy their heirs.\u00a0 Nancy married Jim Scott.\u00a0 She died in 1902.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">James King&#8217;s daughter Synthia married Sam Keaton.\u00a0 Lawrence, Sam and Synthia&#8217;s son, is an ordained minister.\u00a0 Synthia died and Sam married another daughter of James King.\u00a0 They had no heirs.\u00a0 Jayn King was Sam&#8217;s last wife&#8217;s name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ABE KING, son of ROBERT, SR:, married Sally Keaton. They removed to Atwood Carroll County, Tenn.\u00a0 John Halley married Abe&#8217;s girl, Mary King.\u00a0 Nelson and Larkin are the only ones I ever knew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ALEX (BILL) KING married Nancy Jones.\u00a0 Lee, their only son, died in Wilson County years ago.\u00a0 Josie died in Texas.\u00a0 Molly married Bedford (Dick) Gann.\u00a0 She died in 1902.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JOHN KING, SR., son of Robert, Sr., married Mary Caroline Hancock. They died childless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">JAKE KING, SR., son of Robert King, Sr., married Louanie Williams.\u00a0 Their issue was three sons and two daughters.\u00a0 Bob T. R. King married Maggie Jaynuay in West Tenn.\u00a0 S. A. King, Jake&#8217;s second son, married Tennessee<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Keaton.\u00a0 Their heirs, Claud, Alton, Charley, Anna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">S. A. and TEN&#8217;S heirs. ???????<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">BILL KING, Jake Sr.&#8217;s son and grandson of Robert Sr., married Alice Groom.\u00a0 {W. L. King married Alice Groom December 2, 1884 in Cannon County, TN}\u00a0 Their children:\u00a0 Jessee married Burvey King, Oral married Mahala Vance, Blvis married Bobie Stoner, Robert married Adrien Cooper; Daughters were:\u00a0 Lela married Shelah Ashford.\u00a0 He died and she married Joe B. Milligan.\u00a0 Nezzie married Morgan Stoner,\u00a0 Margoria married Shela Higgins.\u00a0 I think one married Grover Davenport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jake&#8217;s daughters, granddaughters of Robert King:\u00a0 Mary married Neal Bogle.\u00a0\u00a0 {M. E. King married N. S. Bogle, October 19, 1873 in Cannon County, TN}\u00a0 Their heirs &#8211; Beny, ___________, Joe, Lougnie, Netty, and Etna Bogle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Martha King, Dau of Jake, Sr., married Jim Womac.\u00a0 {Martha A. King married James M. Womack, January 26, 1879 in Cannon County, TN}\u00a0 Their children are Ora, Jinen, Nancy, and two other girls.\u00a0 Dauphin and Irvin were the boys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ROBERT KING SR. and Lydia Keaton Kings&#8217; daughters were as follows:\u00a0 Alamenta King married Alex Vandygriff.\u00a0\u00a0 They had one son, Will Vandygriff.\u00a0 Will married Rhoda Campbell. Their heirs were John, Jim, Marion, Joe, and Henry the boys.\u00a0 The girls were &#8211; Delia, who married Andy Hamilton, and Betty, who married Rube George.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nancy, Robert King&#8217;s daughter, married Jesse McGee. Monroe, born 1842, Bob, Sam, Jesse, Jr.; and Henry the sons.\u00a0 Monroe married Nancy Owen, widow of John Marcum.\u00a0 Edna, Idella, and Fountain King were Monroe&#8217;s heirs.\u00a0 Bob McGee, Jesse and Nancy&#8217;s son, married Anthem Marcum.\u00a0 Otha, A. J., Marlin, and Ferbin were Bob and Anthem McGee&#8217;s children.\u00a0 Sam McGee married Margaret Ripp, daughter of ______ Hipp.\u00a0 They went to Texas early in life and died there.\u00a0 Jesse Lafayette went to Texas and he died there.\u00a0 Henry McGee, the baby of the family, was a doctor and he married Mark Bethell&#8217;s dau.\u00a0 He located at Milton and practiced his profession there for years.\u00a0 He is dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Page 5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesse McGee and Nancys girls were Sis, she married Bill Jetton.\u00a0 Julia An died single, America married Martin Scott.\u00a0 They are all dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">LUCINDA, daughter of Robert King, Sr., married William Kelly. Sam, the first son,married a Miss Archer in Macon County.\u00a0 Their children were as follows:\u00a0 _____??\u00a0 Bethel Kelly the second son of Lucinda &amp; and William Kelly married Lucy Ward.\u00a0 Their heirs were:\u00a0 Walter, Arther, Clyde, Motie, Nattie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">FOLLOWING FROM W. DIED IN WORLD WAR II, METTIE MARRIED CLEVE DENTON, BESSIE MARRIED<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> JOAN CRAWFORD, FLORA MARRIED ROBERT HALE, VERDA MAE MARRIED ALTON WOMACK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Almenta Kelley married Jonathan Summar.\u00a0 Their children were as follows:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Willey married Penina Bryson, Hatton married Effie Martin, Andrew married John Scotts girl, Bob married Sutton Tasseys girl, Ethel married Joe Bogle, Alta married Smith Bogle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Elizabeth King, a daughter of Robert King, Sr., married Bobby Craddock.\u00a0 Uncle Bobby and Aunt Betseys son.\u00a0 Simon married Allen Wilsons dau.\u00a0 She died and he, Simon, married Harrett Frazier.\u00a0 Harrison Craddock married Jayn Braswell.\u00a0 John married Betty Braswell. Bill Craddock died single.\u00a0 Simon reared two sons.\u00a0 John went to Texas in 1882.\u00a0 Robert died several years ago. Rev. Gradey, his son, is a minister of great promise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Elizabeth and Bobby Craddocks girls:\u00a0 Mary married Wel Vandygriff.\u00a0 Parle married B. Rich.\u00a0 B. died and she married Tom Pugh.\u00a0 Loucinda married Lige Adamson.\u00a0 Their heirs were-Harrison; the doctor, Robert, Loney, and Les.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Candace married Charley Barrett.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Doll Braswell married Bobby and Betsys girl.\u00a0 They went many years ago and we never heard anything of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Mary A., daughter of Robert King, Sr., married Gabriel Keaton.\u00a0\u00a0 Their children died in infancy.\u00a0 They died long ago.\u00a0 Gabriel Keaton was born June 19, 1837; died December 13, 1909, Mary _______ Keaton was born Sept. 14, 1831 ; date of death unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL CLOSELY RELATED TO THE KING FAMILY:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Robert King Keaton, son of Billy Keaton, and grandson of Jack Keaton was a Baptist preacher for many years.\u00a0 He lived and died in Warren county near Dibrell, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">M. A. Cathcart was a Baptist Minister of great promise.\u00a0 Like many others, he died in the prime of life and was sadly missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">John T. Hancock was a fine preacher of great promise.\u00a0 He died in youthful manhood.\u00a0 He was pastor of the Baptist Church on Sycamore when he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">W. J. Watson is a fine preacher.\u00a0 He resides near Lebanon, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">H. L.
