There was no separate cover sheet for this petition.]

To the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee. Your petitioners would represent to your honorable body, that the Hiwassee River, passing through the County of Polk from the big Savannah farm in said County, to Charleston Bradley County, is a stream well suited to navigation, the same running between these points is surrounded by a productive soil and not far distant from a mineral region of vast wealth especially of copper ore upon said stream from Gen. Gambles landing to Charleston large quantities of ore have been shipped in a steam boat during the rainy season of the year but owing to obstructions that exist in said stream, it cannot but for a small portion of the year be rendered available for the purposes of navigation, by the removal of which obstruction it could be rendered at all times navigable and thereby greatly facilitate the agricultural and mineral interest of E Tennessee. In consideration of the premises, your petitioners ask your honorable body to make an appropriation of some suitable sum to be applied under the direction of commissioners appointed for the purpose to the cleaning out of said river herein before named, from the Savannah Polk County, to Charleston Bradley County Tennessee.
ued. [as submitted]

Now therefore your memorialist most respectfully request your Honorable body, to appoint commissioners for the purpose of executing titles to lots in the premises aforesaid – or in any manner as may in your wisdom deem best and as in duty your memorialists will pray & etc. Feb. 16th, 1854

Rufus Mcclary

R.H.
