September Term 1847

 

State of Tennessee, Benton County, September Term 1847.

At a County Court began and held for the County of Benton at the Courthouse in the Town of Camden on the first Monday in September, it being the 6th day of said Month in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty seven and 72nd year of American Independence, their being present and presiding on the bench the worshipfuls, Esqrs, (to wit) Elijah Alsop, Nathan Williams and John W. Davidson.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Eligah Penick be appointed overseer of the Paris road to work from the 4 Mile tree to Willis Rushing’s, hands as follows; John Bell, Charles Bell, Benjamin Bell, Wm. Smith, Hagie, John M. Browning, A.J. Browning, Frederick Mabury, Alford Mabury, Henry Mabury, W. Sullins, Berry Whitley, James Gandy, Alfred Ballard and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Penixk on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 7th.

Thomas W. Wynn and others who were appointed at a former term of this Court to view and Mark an alteration in the road leading from the Town of Camden to Wynn’s ferry which said report was received by the Court and the said alteration is hereby established a highway of this County.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that B. Wynn be appointed overseer of the road leading from the ferry to Paris to work from Wynn’s ferry to George McDaniel’s, hands as follows: Drew A. Askew, Ashley Askew, Aaron Askew, David A. Askew, H. Taylor, Daniel Townsend, John Townsend, Gideon Townsend, G.B. Rolls, William Rolls, Benjamin Akers, John J. Cole, S.L. Cole, George Robertson, Wm. Odom and Noah Townsend and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said B. Wynn on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 7th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Mathew Manning be appointed overseer of the road to work from Henry Barnes to Sandy river, hands as follows; James F. Cooper, Wm. Culpepper, Thomas Pitt, David Dorch, C. Hampton, Eli Christopher, John Bond, John Legate, John L. Beaton, Stephen Clements, Alsey McDaniel, James Moss, John T. Cooper, John W. Cooper and Henry Barnes shall work under said Manning on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

September Term, 1847.

Personally appeared in open Court Wilson M. Sarrett and Made satisfactory evidence that Mary Sarrett was a pensioner of the United States at the rate of $40.00 per annum, that she was a resident of this County and died in said County in the year 1843 on the 19th day of October, that she left the following children and only heirs (to wit) Elizabeth Browning, Joseph Sarrett, Wilson M. Sarrett, Parthena Sarrett, Atilla Bruce, Eliza Stephenson, Charles M. Sarrett and Mahold Sarrett and that Wilson M. Sarrett is one of the administrators of Mary Sarrett deceased.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Calvin Rushing, Elbert Wiggle, Stephen W. Burn, D.N. Shilling, William Barnes, Joseph Alsop and Zechariah Childress be appointed a jury of Review to view and Mark a road leading from Elisha Herrons to Porter’s Mill and to Make report to the next term of this Court of the advantages and disadvantages arising to the public and to individuals.

Issued Sept. 7th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Hyram Pearce, Lewis Holland, Jacob Cupp, John Garner, Elijah Bush, Thomas Cupp and James Garner be appointed a jury of Review to view and mark a road to lead from the Sulphur Springs in Benton County to Porter’s mill and to Make report to the Next term of this Court of the advantages arising to the public and to individuals.

September Term 1847

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Gustin H. Barker be appointed overseer of the road to work from Darby’s old place to Nivins’ hands as follows; James Nivins, J.W.P. Lewis, Henry Lewis, Wm. Lewis, John Hamilton, Alfred Nivins, Hillsman King and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Barker on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 7th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that James J. Rodgers be appointed overseer of the stage road to work from Lewis Cross’ to the 13 Mile tree, hands as follows; Lewis Cross, Joseph Pickler, William Bonds, Calvin Bonds, Benjamin Greer, Jackson Rushing, Allen Williams and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Rogers on said road which is established in the 1st Class.

Issued Sept. 7th.

The Clerk of this Court presented a settlement Made with A. Lashlee Treasurer of the board of Trustees for Benton County Academy which said settlement was examined and approved by the Court and ordered to be recorded.

Personally appeared in open Court John West who was this day chosen and appointed guardian of Moses West and together with him Gilbert McKenzie and Loflin Beaton his security who appeared in open Court and acknowledged the due execution of their bond in the Penal sum of Ninety dollars as conditioned as the law directs.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that John Watson be appointed overseer of the road to work from John H. Williams to Carroll County line, hands as follows; Samuel Presson, Robert Ward, T. Presson, Thomas Presson and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Watson on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 8th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that A.G. Morris be appointed overseer of the road to work from A.G. Morris’ to Nelson Pearce’s old place, hands as follows; William Kilbreth, George Kilbreth, Benjamin J. Williams, Gipson Earp and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Morris on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

September Term 1847.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that Thomas Ballowe be appointed overseer of the road in room of Isaac Davidson’s to work from Chalk Level to Ross’ Ferry, hands as follows; Isaac Davidson, John Smith, James Smith, George Smith, Andrew Smith, James Ballowe, John Ballowe, Samuel Ballowe, George Thomason, Richard Thomason, Stephen Marchbanks, John Capps, James Wyly & hands, John Ford and Samuel Dalton and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Ballowe on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 8th.

Personally appeared in open Court Amos Bruce Trustee of said County and together with him Wilie Arnold, Seth Utley and Redden Hollowell his securities who appeared in open Court and entered into and acknowledged the due execution of their bond in the penal sum of Two thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs for the purpose of drawing the school fund due Benton County for the year 1847.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that John Gossett be appointed overseer of the road to work from Rufus Mullinix’s to the ford of Wolf Creek, hands as follows, Jesse Dillion, James Watson, Dozier Temple, Amos Bruce, hands Henry Gossett, James M. Camp & hands and all other hands in the bounds which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 9th.

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that William Holmes be appointed overseer of the stage road to work from the Tennessee River to the 4 Mile post Paris road, hands as follows; Wilie Arnold, Wm. A.T. Cate, James Sykes, Eli Holmes, John Arnold, William Durdin, Thomas Durdin, James Cuff, Pinking Cuff, F.R. Cuff, Asbury Cuff, John Penick, the hands of Eligah Penick, James Ross, Hyram Johnson, A.T. Corbitt, Amos Corbitt and all other hands in the bounds shall work under said Holmes on said road which is established in the 1st Class.

Issued Sept. 9th

On Motion it is ordered by the Court that John H. Hudson be appointed overseer of the road to work from the Town of Camden to Crockett’s old place, hands as follows; A.J. Hudson, Spartin Bruce, James G. Hudson, James C. Wright, G.W.L. Hudson, Dovion Wright, John Higdon, and all other hands in the bound shall work under said John H. Hudson on said road which is established in the 2nd Class.

Issued Sept. 9th.
