in and around the New Orleans area. He was about 40 when he arrived,
therefore he was born abt. 1821. Left area in 1862 due to family ties
in the North.
ALLEN Richard Howe Rev. 168-169 Was born in 1821. In 1848 was a pastor in Jefferson City, MO, by 1851 he
was serving as a supply minister at Liberty, MO. From 1852-1860 he held
pastorates in Jeffersonville and LaFayette, IN. By 1861 he was in New
Orleans, LA. In 1865 & 1866 he was serving as pastor in Nashville. In
1867 he began a pastorate in Philadelphia, PA and served there until
1881. Died on Sept. 27, 1892. Was a pioneer in the efforts of the Presby.
Church in the USA to minister to Negro people.

ANDERSON Robert Campbell Jr./Rev. 173-174 Son of Robert Campbell Anderson. Was born in Henry Co., VA in 1864. He
graduated from Hampden-Sydney College, VA in 1887 and from Union
Theological Seminary in VA in 1890. He also did graduate work in
Edinburgh, Scotland and the Univ. of Edinburgh in 1895-96. He married
Katie Pierce Walker, of Richmond, VA in 1890. In 1896 he married 2nd Sadie K.
Gaither, of Charlotte, NC. His first pastorate was in San Angelo, TX from
1890-1892. He next served in Roanoke, VA until 1897. At the same time was
the chaplain at Hollins Institute. After serving Shelbyville, he moved to
Gastonia, NC from 1905-1911. In 1911 he became president and manager
of the Mountain Retreat Assoc. (Montreat) and served in the capacity until
his retirement in 1947. He died in 1954.

in Shelbyville serving the Bethsalem Church. In 1854 and 1855 his
address was given as Cherry Flat, TN. From 1856-1858 he is listed as
living at Murfreesboro. Sometime between 1858 and 1859, he moved to TX.
He died there June 15, 1859 at the age of 59 (or born abt. 1800).

Indianola, MS (1937-1940); Shelbyville (1940-1946); Danville, KY (1946-
1948). In 1948 and 1949, he served as superintendent of Home Missions
with a residence at Johnson City, TN. He then moved to Kennedy, TX (1949-
1951); Eldorado, TX (1951-1953); Fort Worth, TX (1953-1955); Louisville, MS
(1955-1961); and then to Stockton, AL.

Jan. 1868 to Oct. 1872. Was the son of Rev. Henry Bryson. He was born in
Lincoln Co., TN in 1831. He studied in Erskine College and Theological
seminary in Due West, SC and at Newburg Theological Seminary in
New York. From 1861-1865 he served as a chaplain in the Confederate
Army. He left Shelbyville to do post-graduate work at the Univ. of VA in 1873.
From 1873-1876 he served as pastor in Columbia, SC. In the years from
1877-1881, he traveled in Europe and Palestine. He became pastor in
Huntsville, AL in 1881. He died in Shelbyville on Feb. 1, 1897.

as chaplain in the Confederate Army. Received into Presbyterian

old when he came to Shelbyville [or born abt. 1851]. Married Mary
Lupton of Clarksville, TN in about 1880. Had 3 children all born in
Shelbyville and baptized in the Church.

serving the Grand Avenue Presby. Church in St. Louis.
CANNON John Franklin Rev. 172 Born in 1851 in Cabarrus Co., NC. Received both a Bachelor and Master
degrees from Davidson College in 1869 and 1871; studied at the Univ. of VA
in 1870; graduated from Union Theological Seminary in VA in 1873. He was
ordained by the Mecklenburg Presbytery in NC in 1873 and the a church in
Leesburg, VA from 1873-1881. After serving the Shelbyville Church (until
Oct. 1888), he became pastor to a church in St. Louis, MO where he served
until his death in 1920. He married Mary Lupton of Clarksville, TN in 1880.

CLARK William Crawford Rev. 173 Born in Summerville, GA in 1849. He graduated from Davidson College in
1871 and from Union Theological Seminary in VA in 1875. His first pastorate
was in Pass Christian, MS from 1875-1881. While there, he married Mary
Temple Monroe in 1878. He served several churches: Greensboro and
Newbern, AL from 1881-1889; Augusta and Sharon, KY from 1897-1904;
Livingston, AL from 1907-1912; Birmingham, AL from 1912-1919 and then
Sheffield, AL from 1919-1927. He died in Sheffield in 1927. He was president
of the Greensboro Female College (AL) from 1887-1889. Became Super-
intendent of Evangelism for the Synod of KY until 1907. He had one son,
William Monroe Clark.

Presbyterian ministry and served as a missionary to Korea for 13 years.

CLARK William Monroe 152 Korea His father was William Crawford Clark who served the church from July 1889
to April 1897. William Monroe was born in Greensboro, AL in 1881. He was
not quite 8 years old when the Clark family moved to Shelbyville. Educated
at Southwestern Presby. Univ., Princeton Univ., Princeton Theological
Seminary and the Univ. of Berlin. He was ordained in 1907 by the
Ebenezer Presby. in KY. He served church in Selma, AL and South
Frankfort, KY until 1909. He began service as a foreign missionary in 1909.
From 1909-1922 he was located at Chunju, Korea. From 1922-1941 at
Seoul, Korea. He returned to the US in 1941 and became pastor of the
Presby. Church at Midway, KY. He served there until 1947 when he accepted
a ministry at Thomson, GA. He retired in 1953 and, as of 1965, makes his
home in Orlando, FL.

U.S. Senator
Born in Maury Co. and moved to Shelbyville in 1849 with his brother, Edmund
Cooper. Both were attorneys. Married Eliza Strickler in 1851. Joined the
church in 1855. Served as a member of the State House of Representatives
and as judge of the Circuit Court. In 1870, ran for the office of U.S. Senator
against Andrew Johnson, former President of the US. Cooper won the
election and served as U.S. Senator from 1871-1877. He moved to Nashville
in 1867 and had his church membership transferred to a church in Nashville.
He was killed by bandits while visiting a silver mine in Mexico in 1884. He
is buried in the old City Cemetery in Shelbyville.

began serving the Shelbyville congregation, or born abt. 1807.
CUNNINGHAM Alexander Newton 168 Chaplain in the
Army of the
Confederacy
Born in Jonesboro, TN, Mar. 16, 1807. Educated at Washington College in
East TN. He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1830. On
August 7, 1834 he married Margaretta Ann Eason. He was ordained by the
Presbytery of So. Alabama in 1833. From 1833-1836 he served as supply
pastor in Montgomery, AL. He was pastor in Augusta, GA from 1838-1842.
And, supply minister of the church in Franklin, TN from 1838-1842. He
founded the Franklin Female Institute. He was chaplain in the Army of the
Confederacy from 1862-1865. He returned to Franklin after the Civil War. In
1874 he moved to Aberdeen, MS. He died suddenly of heart disease in
Franklin, TN on Sept. 5, 1878. He received his Doctor of Divinity degree in
1860 from Stewart College in Clarksville, TN.

DASHIELL Alfred Henry Jr./Rev. 150 Born in Jan. 1824, Maryland. He was born while the Dashiells lived there. He
was one of the 4 Dashiell children who joined the Shelbyville Church. In 1844
he was licensed to preach. He was ordained in 1847. Prior to the Civil War
he served pastorates in Rock Hill, MO and Stockbridge, MA. During the
Civil War, he was chaplain in the Union Army. After the Civil War, he briefly
served the Presby. Church in Curtusville, MA. He then became pastor for the
Presby. Church in Lakewood, NJ. In 1888 he became Superintendent of
Presby. Missions for churches in that area. He retired in 1903 and died in
1908 at Lakewood, NJ.
DASHIELL Alfred Henry Rev. 165 He was born in 1794 in Baltimore, MD. His father was George Dashiell,
a prominent Episcopal clergyman. Worked in the Philadelphia area
until sometime after 1834. From Philadelphia, he spent several years in IL.
By 1838, he was living in Franklin, TN. He moved to Shelbyville in 1839 or
1840.

Born in Aberdeen, MS in 1861. Studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory in
OH. Taught school at the Pontotoc Synodical College in MS. She came to
Shelbyville sometime prior to Oct. 1885 to teach at the Female Institute
under Rev. Thomas DeLacy Wardlaw. In 1886 she became a missionary and
was sent to Kochi, Japan, beginning her work there in Dec. 1887. She
worked there until she retired and left Japan in Apr. 1937 after 50 years of
missionary service. After retirement, she first lived in Gonzales, TX. In
1943 she moved to Jackson, MS where she lived until her death in April
1960. She was 99 years old at her death.

Presbytery of St. Louis in 1876. His wife was Sallie Elizabeth Lancaster. His
first pastorate was at a church outside of St. Louis until 1876. He moved to
Shelbyville circa 1876. He held a number of pastorates: McMinnville from
1881-1882; in Humbolt from 1882-1884; Mt. Carmel Church near Covington,
TN from 1884-1888; in Helena, AR from 1888-1893; in Point Pleasant, WV

1869. He returned to the north and was in Bridgeville, PA until 1884. He
was then in Canonsburg, PA from 1884-1896. He died in Markelton, PA
in 1916.

attended Davidson College and graduated from Columbia Theological
Seminary in 1877. His pastorates before coming to Shelbyville were:
Milledgeville, GA (1879-1891); Anniston, AL (1891-1903); and Covington,
KY (1903-1906). After Shelbyville he was in: Charleston, SC (1915-1917) and
in Palatka, FL (1917-1938) when he retired. He died there in 1947.

Was a substantial dry goods merchant in Shelbyville. He was given the
responsibility for the purchase of a chandelier for the church, circa 1855. He
was also an ardent Democrat and supporter of James Buchanan (who was in
a 3-way race for the US presidency). Buchanan supporter's were often referred
to as "Buck's men". The design incorporated into the chandelier included the
symbol of Buchanan's candidacy - a ring of six buck's heads with a set of
antlers.

Parents were Ebenezer Newton and Elizabeth Buchanan Newton. He was
born in Shrewsbury Township in York Co, PA in 1765. On May 22, 1778
George made his pledge of allegiance to the new American nation on
Snow's Creek, In Iredell co., NC. There is evidence he served in the
colonial military forces during the Revolutionary War. Married in 1794 to
Mary McCall in Lincoln Co., NC. Accepted a call from the United Congregations
of Swannanoa and Rim's Creek in Feb. 1798. These were located in
Buncombe Co., NC in the vicinity of present-day Asheville.
NEWTON George 159 Was a teacher at the Union Hill School/Academy in the Morristown Community
in 1797. This school was the first school west of the Blue Ridge in NC and the
first school in Asheville.
NEWTON George 161 May have married 3 times. His first wife was Mary or Martha McCall. She
went by Polly. She probably died before 1827. His second wife was Ann. He
may have married Ann prior to 1827. Ann died July 5, 1831 at the age of 34.

moved to Jackson, MS. Married Mary Elizabeth Peacock before 1829 (probably
in Shelbyville, TN). Died in Nov. 1859 at the age of 56. Had a son, Oscar.

married Margaret Milligan of Canton, OH just prior to coming to
Shelbyville.
PATTERSON Robert Meade Jr./Rev. 174 Born in Nashville, TN in 1888. Graduate of Vanderbilt Univ. (1909) and of
Princeton Theological Seminary (1913). His first (assistant) pastorate was
in Pittsburgh, PA (1913-1916). In 1916 he married Margaret Milligan of
Canton, OH. He married 2nd Gertrude Lippencott in 1934. After leaving
Shelbyville in 1917 he served churches in: Waynesburg, PA (1919-1921);
Ossining, NY (1921-1933); Steubenville, OH (1933-1940); and New Castle,
PA (1940-1952). He retired to Mayville, NY in 1953 and died there in 1958.

Austin Presby. Theological Seminary in 1888. His first served as supply
minister for a group of churches Central TX (1888-1889). He then moved to
Belton, TX until 1895; Martinsville, VA (1895-1898); Cuero, TX (1899-1901);
Brownwood, TX (1901-1905); Sherman, TX (1905-1907); and at Paris, TX
(1907-1913). He served as the president of AR College from 1913-1915. He
then held pastorates: Morrilton, AR (1915-1917); Galveston, TX (1917-1922);
Shelbyville (1922-1926); Memphis (1926-1935); and then to Corinth, MS
(1935-1936). He died while serving in that church, in March 1936.

evangelist in and around Charlotte, NC until he retired in 1941. He died there
in 1944. He married Cora Bee Haddon of Due West, SC. They had 2
children.

1901-1910, when he retired. He died in Hancock, MD in 1920. He had one

Academy
Was never a member of the Shelbyville congregation. His father was
Rev. Thomas DeLacy Wardlaw, who came to Shelbyville in 1867 to head
the Shelbyville Female Seminary. Born in Paris, KY in 1856. Educated at
the Southwestern Presby. University and at the College of New Jersey (now
Princeton University). After his ordination in 1880, he and his family went
to Brazil to serve as foreign missionaries. He was located at Pernambuco for
several years then served at Ceara, Brazil until 1901. At that time, he
returned to the US due to ill health. He taught at Webb School in Bell
Buckle sometime after 1901. He died in Miami, FL in 1934.

A Presbyterian minister. Principal of the Shelbyville Female Seminary until
his death in 1879. Born and educated in Ireland. Migrated to the U.S. in his
early 20s. Came to Shelbyville 1867 from the pastorate of the
Presbyterian church in Clarksville, TN. Wife was Louise and had several
children, including Delacy Wardlaw.

on Aug. 29, 1879. Awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Stewart College in
Clarksville in 1871.

Seminary in Cincinnati, OH in 1927 and a Master Degree from the Univ. of
KY in 1932. His first pastorate was in Covington, KY (1927-1928). He then
served: Millersburg, KY (1928-1933); Shelbyville (1933-1939); Selma, AL
(until 1958); Miami, FL (1958-?); and then Miami Beach, FL until his death in
1964.
